Oldest Brims in LA

Unread post by alexalonso » December 24th, 2009, 7:16 pm

Some of the oldest Brims in LA are not active anymore but there was one such set called the Untouchable Brims or the Unton Brims that were active on the westside by Santa Barabara Ave (now Martin Luther King Blvd) before there was even Rollin 40 Crips.

The Untouchable Brims may have been them Manual Arts Brims. David Johnson was killed in a drive by when some Crips pulled up along side of him and a car full of Brims and shot him through his side and the bullet went through his heart killing him instantly. Big Country was in the car that night. It wasn't enough Untouchables for them to bang in that section due to Crips poping up in that area. Brims used to hang out on 39th and Normadie at Teaspoons house and few other spots.

They're are a few older Brims around but they live farther away in other cities and being grandparents now, working and doing positive things. We too old now for this stuff and frankly I am proud of the ones that are bettering themselves by going to college, working and building family and community relationships. We have stripped our communities with this non sense long enough and it's the least we can being more productive in our own communities. There has been enough blood shed of human lives. See it's not funny when it's yours being given a life sentence or 10 years (5 years is too much for me). It's heart wrenching burying a loved one rather he kin or not and it's not cute being uneducated, can't read or write or spell, being jobless, homeless and spiritual-less. oh let me stop, I'm preaching now. But what I say is true. Some of us can't even read to our own kids or help with their homework because we have given up our lives to bang. I can't draw SS ON THAT.

This is Herbert Cole from the LA Brims. Herbert died in prison of a asthma attack in 2012. My boy was sent back to prison because he left the state he was paroled in. The state of Louisiana waited 2years while he was in LA before they took him back. He was doing so good too. I spoke to him all the time while I was here in Texas. His family had him transported by train back to LA for his homegoing, which I went to his repast at his nephew's home.

RIP OG Doty Hayward, he was also in the Hat Gang be4 they became Brims. Doty was stabbed in both knee caps and left in a alley off of Vermont and 62nd (that would be between Vermont and Menlo Ave) where he bled to death.

One of Brother Brims have passed on last Saturday night. Tripple OG MICHAEL HARRIS. He was one of the originators of the Hat Gang. I meet Michael in 1968 when he lived off of 65th & Vermont Ave. (Brims ran that area) across from Brim Headquarters. Michael also had a sister named Rhonda Harris who was murdered by her husband. She too was around when the Hat Gang was in action.

I doubt very much they are connected. But, I'm not up on what's happening in the set today. The ones I keep in touch with are the older Brims and we talk about today and maybe who died and how we need to better take care of ourselves since God has allowed us to stay alive this far. lol. We talk about contributions we are making in our family lives and the positive things we do in our communties.

Here's a picture of Big Country, he passed in 2012 of Nov. He and some other cats started 59 Brims which was between 59th & Hoover uP to 59th & Figoueroa and when his family moved to San Diego and he helped start, I want to say the Logan Park or Logan Ave Brims. They might be one in the same. I lived in San Diego with his family for a year until I met my future husband. (non-gang member)

Wow what a terrible way to die. RIP Doty. Does anyone know what year he passed? I assume in the 70's.

I didn't want to start a new thread but this question is about Fruit Town Brims.

I know their hood is just to the west of USC, but at one point in the 70's to early 80's did their hood used to extend to the north side of USC?

I recall hearing about an "Orchard Ave" clique of FTB from the 70's, which is in the University Park area just north of USC. That area today is now mostly student housing & frat houses with school security posted on those streets. They wouldn't allow a hood to thrive there.
