1968 andI know for sho they was Hat Gang in 1968, by the time 1969 was here they were Brims. When I met the Brims they had just changed their names to Brims. i became a Lady Brim by the end of 68 or early 69.

LATE 70s

I think Hat Gang predates the Blood / Crip era, so they may have existed in the late 1950s and early 1960s during the post WW2 black gang era in Los Angeles

It was never the same gang, just a name coincidence. There were several gangs named for hats in those days - the Acey Duceys, Black Hats. Wearing a particular style of hat was a way of repping a gang in those days, so a hat oriented gang name was a natural.
