UNBEATEN welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather and Oscar de la Hoya have nearly settled on terms for a September rematch of their showdown from last May that set revenue records.

Richard Schaefer, chief executive of De la Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions, said that both fighters have agreed to the idea with only final financial terms to be worked out.

"We are still discussing things but we have almost finalized it," Schaefer told ESPN.

The first Mayweather-De la Hoya bout grossed $US120 million ($137.07 million) to become the richest fight in boxing history, surpassing the $US112 million ($127.93 million) dollars from a 2002 showdown between Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis.

Mayweather, 39-0 with 25 knockouts, won a 12-round split decision over de la Hoya, 38-5 with 30 knockouts, last May in Las Vegas and kept his World Boxing Council crown with a 10th-round stoppage of England's Ricky Hatton last month.

The fight will likely be September 13 or 20 in Las Vegas or Los Angeles and possibly at a catch weight between the welterweight and higher junior middleweight level.

Possible venues include Dodger Stadium and the 27,000-seat home of Major League Soccer's Los Angeles Galaxy as de la Hoya has said he wants an outdoor bout at some point before retirement.

Fight to be telecast during a “Free HBO weekend!”
By Flattop

FightNews has been informed that former IBF super featherweight champion Steve Forbes has been selected to fight Oscar De La Hoya in the first of three “Farewell” fights that the “Golden Boy” has proposed for 2008. Forbes, the former IBF super featherweight champion and runner-up in Season Two of The Contender was chosen over IBF jr welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi and WBA #3 ranked lightweight Dmitriy Salita. Forbes will face De La Hoya on May 3rd at a catch weight of approximately 150 pounds, which - ironically - was the same weight limit for the participants in Season Two of The Contender. Forbes contested the first part of his career at 130-pounds but his speed and ring generalship have allowed him to successfully compete at jr welter and welterweight. In his most recent fight in December 2007, Forbes – weighing 142 pounds - manhandled former hotshot Francisco Bojado en route to win a split decision. Although five foot-seven and half inches, Forbes fights “tall” with exceptional hand speed and reflexes. De La Hoya is the bigger man at five foot-ten and half inches, but the matador style of De La Hoya should provide an interesting counterpoint to the sharp shooting skills of the veteran Forbes. Golden Boy Promotions will officially announce the De La Hoya vs. Forbes contest this week. HBO will telecast the De La Hoya-Forbes fight during a “Free HBO weekend!”

Well, Cintron and Margarito are getting it on with the winner getting Cotto. Mayweather needs to fight the winner or vacate his crown.

Dig this, after Cotto/Cintron/Margarito(and now Quintana since his upset
victory over Williams) dance, there's a real opportunity for unification in boxing's deepest
division(147lbs). That said, plenty of other fighters? Really, like whom?
