Boot: An L.A.P.D Officer's Rookie Year

Postby crm » September 7th, 2009, 1:50 am

Has anybody read this book? It was a pretty good read. It showed the complex interactions between the police and the street gangs. Even though a lot of people will probably dismiss it because it's a cops POV, the guy seems pretty fair to me. He even takes shots at what he sees as excesses from fellow cops, but also points out that they are understaffed and have other things working against them. Any thoughts?

I´m halfway thru this book and the stories while on patrol are pretty interesting. But the chapter where he tries to explain the history of black gangs in L.A was pretty messed up him being a lapd gang expert. He states that the only reliable gang experts are cops. Then he goes on saying Tookie started up the South Side Crips and Mac Thomas starting the Piru Crips among other things. In Tookies book he says Mac Thomas was firmly against Pirus becoming Crips. But its interesting reading a cops point of view.

The last part was true...when tookie had the home for boys on LB and Pine Blvd he tried to unite the pirus and crips and put them under one banner. they even had a big meeting at a party and mack thomas from the compton crips and the grandees met with the pirus but the lines of war were already drawn....it ended in a big brawl

I dont know if the killing of salty and tam happendend before or after the meeting...i think it was after the meeting because OGs told me after the killings it was an all out war between the crips and the pirus
