Gang Member, 50, Fatally Shot In Front Of Store

(CBS) LOS ANGELES A 50-year-old gang member whose nickname was "Pops" was fatally shot as he stood in front of a liquor store in Los Angeles, a police detective said Wednesday.

Francisco Gutierrez was found lying on the ground on Pico Blvd. about 6 p.m. Tuesday night. He was taken to California Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Two armed men confronted Gutierrez and shot him several times in the upper body, according to Los Angeles police. They then ran toward 15th and Fedora streets, where they got into a late '90s burgundy four-door Honda Civic driven by a third man.

"I don't know how active he was. He was just a so-called lifer. As far as criminal activity, he wasn't very active," a police official said.

Police said that they were sure the killing was gang-related, but had no solid leads as to the identities of the suspects, who were in their early 20s.

when you dont have suspects and dont know the reason for the killing, how can police jump to the conclusion that it was gang related.

Maybe he owed someone some money, maybe it was random, etc.

Ya..unless they know more than they are saying...that is presumptuous.

because he was a documented gang member and i think we both know that the lapd considers any crime with a gang member involved 'gang related'. the lapd considers it gang related even if there was another motive simply cuz a gang member was involved
