LONG BEACH - "Freedom Writers," the new movie documenting Wilson High School teacher Erin Gruwell's work educating young people, is billed as an inspiration to peace and understanding.
But at a movie theater where the film opened Friday night, fights broke out instead, forcing the theater to shut down ticket sales.
Police were called to the Edwards Long Beach 26 at the Towne Center at 7501 Carson Blvd. just before 11 p.m. after reports of a fight outside the theater, said Officer Jackie Bezart of the Long Beach Police Department.
It's unknown whether the individuals involved in the fight were moviegoers, Bezart said.
While officers were breaking up the fight, a second fight broke out among patrons waiting in line to see the new film documenting Gruwell's efforts to have students write about their personal struggles, Bezart said.
At that point, the theater manager decided as a precaution to cancel all remaining ticket sales that night.
"The manager decided there was too much going on and cancelled all movie ticket sales remaining," Bezart said.
Additional police officers were then called in to assist in the dispersal of the crowd, Bezart said.
The police were reportedly wearing riot gear, a standard precautionary practice at any incident with a large number of people, Bezart said.
No one was injured or taken into custody, Bezart said.

Ask anybody who gang bang there about Cambodians.Mcminister wrote:dangerous minds wasnt that corny well i don really remember but that movie shud be a chick flick....someone in the class says my mom died everybody else start crying...n they suppose to be hard

I dont care what anybody thinks. I enjoyed this movie. It's a shame that the teacher only could make only could make a difference in that school and not the whole city of LBC.

If you mean by 'hard' the lack of hesitation in killing and street soldier mentality, I'd say heck yea. All the black and latino racial violence is making news now, but it's nothing new in the LB between asians and latinos (east side longos and TRG).Mcminister wrote:since i neva been to LBC i gata ask
is the asians there hard as the brotha's there
jst a curius question

I wonder how 'real' the events depicted are.Christina Marie wrote:Yes it is a true story. I knew several of the kids that participated in the program. I havent seen the movie so I dont know how true to life it really is though.curiousdude06 wrote:I wonder if any of it is true, maybe former students can give the real skinny
