Suge Knight’s ascension into one of the most powerful forces behind hip-hop is already a tale of gargantuan proportions, and now Showtime will provide viewers with the story from the original source. The network is launching a series to reveal what happened behind “America’s most iconic and mythologized figures,” starting with the co-founding former CEO of Death Row Records.

“Black Swan” producer Bradley J. Fischer and “Training Day” director Antoine Fuqua are already signed onto the project, promising not to shy from the exploits and violence of Marion Knight’s rise to prestige.

Suge Knight is notorious for backing up his demands with force, calling his henchmen to threaten other record label executives to release artists who would become the breakthrough stars of his own Death Row Records, founded in 1991. He built the careers of Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, and Tupac Shakur in the midst of an East Coast/West Coast rap war.

Death Row’s aim to become “the Motown of the '90s” was truncated by Knight’s incarceration on a parole violation in 1996, but Mr. Knight's personal involvement in the documentary is highly anticipated as he returns to music production with his new company, Black Kapital, to oversee the film’s soundtrack.
