Sharpton Denounces Hilton's Jail Release
Jun 7, 2007

NEW YORK - The Rev. Al Sharpton denounced Paris Hilton's release from jail on Thursday, saying it had "all of the appearances of economic and racial favoritism."

"I think that it's both another glaring display of how race and money seem to get different treatments. There seems to be a different criminal justice system for some than others," Sharpton said.

After three days into a 23-day jail stint, Hilton was fitted with an electronic monitoring ankle bracelet and released to the comforts of her 2,700-square-foot Hollywood Hills home due to a mysterious and unspecified medical condition.

But hours after Hilton was sent home, the judge who put her in jail ordered her into court to determine whether she should be put back behind bars.

Hilton must report to court at 9 a.m. Friday, Superior Court spokesman Allan Parachini told The Associated Press.

"My understanding is she will be brought in in a sheriff's vehicle from her home," Parachini said.

Although Sharpton said he has "nothing but empathy for Ms. Hilton," he doubted similar treatment would be offered to minorities or poor people.

"There are any number of cases of people who handled being incarcerated badly and even have health conditions that are not released," Sharpton said.

"But I think that it gives a very bad signal when Ms. Hilton is treated any differently than any other parole violator in their county or in this country."

But do you think she got released because she's white? Or just a celebrity?

I don't care if she was refusing to eat, I tried that trick in third grade, and when I got hungry enough, I ate the food.

She's also the kind of person that I would expect to sue if any little thing went wrong. Maybe the judge was just trying to make sure she has no reason to bring a lawsuit up at a later date.

Too optimistic? Yeah, I know.

i agree with what he says and that bitch should have served at least most her sentence out, but he's nobody that should be talking about anything cause i will never have any respect for that man, nor should anyone else.

Its a shame, she should have finished all of her time. I dont know anyone else that can get away with anything like that except someone of her status. Im sure if it was a rapper, a black rapper esp he would have to do all of his time.

That broad is no better than anyone else. I am glad the judge ordered her back in jail, even though she is still getting preferential treatment. I heard on the radio they painted the cell she is in before she came and she got her county blues straight out of the plastic. WTF is that? And I guess in court when the judge ordered her back she started crying "mommy thats not fair". Fair?

OJ did what to avoid jail? I think its all about the $$.

And heres a little piece I found in a CCPOA blog

It's Nice To Have Money.

Paris Hilton was released from from the sensitive needs unit of the L A jail today, only 3 days into her 22 day sentence, despite the fact that the judge specifically ordered that she do the whole 22 days in custody. She is now under house arrest, due to an undisclosed medical condition, probably related to; "Waaaahhhhh, I can't hang and I'm rich, pretty and white, do something." It just renews your faith in the justice system, doesn't it?

addendum: On Friday, at about noon, Ms. Hilton was returned to court by sheriff's deputies. The judge ordered her returned to jail. She was removed from the courtroom, screaming. The judge, by the way, is a Ronald Regan appointee.

On September 24, 2004, 27-year-old Jonathan Magbie died while serving a 10-day sentence for marijuana possession in a Washington, D.C., jail. Magbie, a quadriplegic since a drunk driving accident at the age of 4, was a first-time offender.

Image

D.C. Superior Court Judge Judith E. Retchin defied a presentencing recommendation that Magbie be given a term of probation — a sentence that even the prosecutor found acceptable.

Retchin imposed the sentence because she didn’t like Magbie’s attitude, and the car in which Magbie was riding when apprehended had a loaded gun and cocaine. Magbie had told Retchin that marijuana made him feel better and that he didn’t think there was anything wrong with using it.

A miscommunication between jail, hospital, and court officials gave Retchin the impression that the D.C. jail could handle Magbie’s medical needs — primarily, a near-constant need for ventilation to help him breathe. In fact, the jail could not accommodate him, but by the time Magbie reached a hospital, he was dead.

"White Privilage"
by ABW

White Privilege exists whether you know it, acknowledge it, or understand it. Any attempts to convince me that you, a white person, don’t have White Privilege will result in laughter, mockery, and possibly a beat down. (lol)

It is a given that, whenever I engage in debate with a white person and mention privilege, the white person in question gets all upset. “I do NOT have privilege!” they say, and then begin to tell the story of their poor, rural upbringing or something. I think this reaction stems from two sources. Firstly, White Liberal Guilt, which I have written about before. Secondly, a misunderstanding of the word ‘Privilege’.

When most people hear Privilege or are referred to as Privileged their mind immediately thinks of economic privilege: people who are rich, or are born rich, who have a leg up in society or get by because their parents have a famous name or something. Paris Hilton is an example of that kind of privileged person. Most white people are not like Paris Hilton, nor would I suggest that they are. That would be cruel.

What they don’t realize is that economic privilege is only one kind of privilege. When I speak of White Privilege, I am not speaking of economics (though they may come into play based on the individual), I am speaking of unearned advantages one has because one is born White. That’s not the only kind of Privilege there is, of course. Another I’m very familiar with is Heterosexual Privilege.

^^Yeah thats usually their first response....
