Jul 17, 2007
DETROIT - Two teenage boys stole a sport utility vehicle and crashed Tuesday as they tried to speed away, killing a 56-year-old woman in a wheelchair near Wayne State University's campus, police said.
Gwendolyn Leonard-Hall of Detroit died at a hospital, the Detroit Free Press reported. Police said the boys were caught after a foot chase.
"This was a result of two subjects doing the wrong thing," Wayne State police Chief Anthony Holt told WWJ-AM in Detroit. "Police were not giving pursuit. They saw police."
Wayne State police spotted the teens breaking into a 1999 Jeep Cherokee about 2 p.m. Police said the boys sped away after seeing police cars, and slammed into a moving Jeep Liberty before hitting the woman.
A woman in the Liberty was taken to a hospital and was listed in serious condition, The Detroit News reported. The teens also were taken to a hospital for treatment, and the investigation into the crash was ongoing.
