A 23-year-old man was shot and killed early yesterday near a club in South Baltimore's Brooklyn neighborhood. The victim, Ryan L. Holliman was hit once in the back, police said.
Also yesterday, police identified the woman who was fatally shot Wednesday night as she and her boyfriend sat in a car in the 800 block of Hilton St. as Stephanie Stevens, 22, of Martinsburg, W.Va. Her 27-year-old boyfriend was shot in the right hand and was treated and released from Maryland Shock Trauma Center, police said.
In the latest killing, Holliman and two friends had gone to Club Mate and Lounge about midnight yesterday and left as the club closed, about 2 a.m., police said. The three walked about two blocks and got into Holliman's car as two men approached from behind, and one fired a handgun once through the car's rear window.
Holliman, who was in the driver's seat, was shot and sped from the scene. He drove back to the club, jumped out of the car and passed out on the sidewalk, while one of his friends pounded on the club's door for help. The club's security guard called police. Holliman died at Maryland Shock Trauma Center about 3 a.m., police said.
A police spokesman said a motive was not known.
The club's owner, Vu Huynh, said he hires off-duty Baltimore police officers to stand outside the club and also has security inside the club, which is in the 3600 block of S. Hanover St. Huynh said that in recent weeks several victims have come to the club for help.
In one case Jan. 10, police said a cabdriver was robbed and shot in the neck. He ran to the club for help and survived. Huynh said that in December, a man was robbed of his car near the club and forced to take off his pants. The man also ran to the club for help, he said.
The last homicide in the area claimed the life of Christopher Whitfield, 22, on Dec. 15 in the 3800 block of S. Hanover St., two blocks from the club.
