Guns Used In D.C. Bank Robberies Came From Iraq
(AP) WASHINGTON Investigators say the gang that carried out a series of brazen bank robberies in the area two years ago used weapons smuggled from the battlefields of Iraq.
The investigation by the FBI and local police is centering on several A-K-47s used in some of the heists in D-C and Prince George's County. In Iraq, such weapons are plentiful and cheap.
Authorities say the weapons were part of a small cache purchased from a gang member's friend, who had recently come back from Iraq. They say the soldier was a member of a military police battalion based at Fort Meade. No charges have been filed in the weapons case.
More than $360,000 was stolen from six banks over several months in 2004. No one was seriously hurt, though the robbers opened fire inside three banks and fired at a police officer who tried to stop their getaway.
