The Hells Angels Motorcyle Club

There are many that believe California's Prison Rehabilitation System and other systems around the world have more sinister purpose outside of incarceration. Discuss prison topics here in California, throughout the United States and Internationally.

The War between Bandidos and Hells Angels in Scandinavia

(...)
That evening, in Tavastia, the first shots were fired in the war between Hells Angels and Bandidos. No one were hurt, and because of that, it didn’t make big news, but from now on, there would be no way back.

Ever since the police raided Overkill mc’s clubhouse, they had kept an eye on them. At the end of 1994 the police visited once more the clubhouse, looking for weapons, and found them. Weapons and bulletproof vests, would be something Overkill and Undertaker members would be using a lot of in the future.

In Januuary, 1995, Undertakes mc became hangaround club in the Bandido Nation, and soon they would have to prove if they were up to it.

On 1st of April, 1995, there is an exchange of shots between Undertakers mc’s and Cannonball mc’s members, in a Helsinki bar. A member of Cannonball mc is wounded. Cannonball mc is at this time a supporter club for Overkill mc. They would stand side by side with Overkill mc, in the coming struggle against Undertakers mc, which was about to heat up.

On 17th of July, 1995, Mikael ”Joe” Ljunggren, Bandidos mc Sweden’s president, is shot and killed on a highway in Sweden, while riding his harley back from a visit to Undertakers mc in Helsinki. A spectacular funeral took place for ”Joe”, and plans for revenge were allready taking place.

On 26th of July, 1995, an anti-tank rocket, stolen from a Swedish army depot, is shot at MC Finland’s clubhouse. It goes through the walls, and does not exploded on impact. Three days later MC Finland has a bike show as planned, because as their spokesman said, ”APC’s. Rockets. Nothing’s gonna stop us”.

It is now the turn of Undertakers mc, to be payed a visit by the police. On the 1st of August, 1995, the police turn Undertakers mc’s clubhouse upside down. The police are sure Undertakers mc are behind the rocket attack, but still no arrest are made. Later in August, a MC Finland member is beaten up and loses his club vest. It turns out it was Undertakers mc who was behind it, because at a later police razzia of Undertakers mc’s clubhouse, the vest was found and returned to its owner. August is also the month, were Undertakers mc became Bandidos mc Probationary chapter. And it was as Bandidos probationary, two members got arrested for the rocket attack.

On 2nd of September, 1995, Kai Tapio Blom and Antti Tapani Vaaja admits to the rocket attack on MC Finland’s clubhouse. Bandidos loses their clubhouse, and will for a while be homeless.

On 27th of September, 1995, the trial against Kai Tapio Blom and Antti Tapani Vaaja starts. When members of Bandidos arrives at the courthouse to attend the trial, they are immediately attacked and beaten up by members of MC Finland and Cannonball mc. It went so fast so that the few police present, can’t prevent fists to fly and blood to be spilled. During the rest of the trial, during October, there would be plenty of police present, but even more of Bandidos’ members from Denmark, Sweden and Norway. There wouldn’t be any problems during the rest of the trial, which ends on 27th of October, with six years for Kai Tapio Blom, and four and a half year for Antti Tapani Vaaja.

While the trial was going on, a tattoo shop in downtown Helsinki, partly owned by MC Finland, was completely destroyed by four men. MC Finland were payed another visit by the police, and tried one more time to get compensation for damages to the clubhouse from back in 1993. This time they succeed in getting 13000 mrk in compensation.

1995 finished off with yet another police razzia. This time it was Cannonball mc’s turn. A member was suspected of rape. Also, Cannonball mc’s president got away with a suspended sentence of 11 months, for possesion of drugs and a pistol.

1996 would be a year full of incidents, arrest and sentences, and it started right away. But first Bandidos mc Probatonary got a new clubhouse, in downtown Helsinki, and to this day Bandidos mc’s Helsinki chapter is also know as the Downtown chapter. That was celebrated with a big housewarming party on 9th of March, the same weekend as there was Tattoo convention in Helsinki. The Tattoo convention was attended by Hells Angels members from different parts of Europe, so there were more police in the streets of Helsinki, than during a usual weekend. The reason was also because there had been a lot of violence involving the mc-clubs.

On 11th of February, 1996, two bombs went off. One at a bar, owned by MC Finland, another at a warehouse, which was the wrong target. It was believed a warehouse next to it, connected to MC Finland, was the intended target. Later in February the police stopped a car with MC Finland members, they were armed to the teeth with guns and hand grenades. The police was sure MC Finland was out to get revenge, for the many attacks on them and their properties.

1st of March, 1996, it happened. A Bandido probationary member and a prospect, went out in front of their clubhouse to check what was going on. People believed to be connected to MC Finland, were suspected of watching their clubhouse. A shootout started in the middle of the street, and the Bandido member and the prospect were wounded. Bandidos’ vice president, Jarkko Kokko, was badly wounded, and would on 17th of March pass away from complications of the wounds. The next day, Ilkka Tapio Ukkonen, wanted for the murder, turned himself over to the police. On 23rd of March, 1996, MC Finland gets their full colors, and are now Hells Angels MC Finland Helsinki. The new members could now proudly wear the red and white Viking badge, on the front of their vests. A badge given only to the first Hells Angels members in a Scandinavian contries.

Besides losing their vice president, whose funeral was attended by bikers from as far away as England, Bandidos also lost their second clubhouse.

On the other hand, MC Finland got a new clubhouse, just before they became full Hells Angels chapter. They also had another supporter mc-club, who made headlines in the news. Backwoods mc North, from Kajaani in the very north of Finland, had been running an illegal bar. A member of the club was also an officer in the Finnish Army, but not for long, after the Army found out what he was involved in. In September, 1996, members of the club was fined for the illegal bar activities. Backwoods mc North became Hells Angels mc Finland Kajaani in December, 1998.

Cannonball mc, who had supported Overkill from the very beginning, was also getting promoted. By April, 1996, they were prospect members, calling themselves MC Finland. A few months later, in July, they resigned from the Hells Angels, and continued as Cannonball mc. There was a lot of speculation about the reason for the resignation, and one reason might have been that Cannonball mc believed they would get their own Hells Angels chapter, and not have to join the Helsinki chapter. Anyway, a year later, Cannonball mc would have chapters in Helsinki, Turku, Kouvola and Lahti.

Ilkka Tapio Ukkonen and Jussi Taisto Pentinen, prospect members in Hells Angels Finland, went on trial for the murder of Jarkko Kokko. On 7th of June, 1996, Ilkka Tapio Ukkonen got 12 ½ years, and Jussi Taisto Pentinen got six years. Years later, now a Hells Angels member, Ilkka Tapio Ukkonen would be in the Hells Angels’ Scandinavian calender, with a black and white Filthy Few badge on the front of his vest. In Scandinavia, the only members of Hells Angels with this badge, are members who has been sentenced for murder.

But the war was not over yet. Just because the person who pulled the trigger ended up in prison, Bandidos still wanted revenge. On 12th of May, 1996, an unexpolded bomb was found at Hells Angels’ clubhouse. A week later an attempt to bomb the clubhouse again fails, when the perpetrators, not members of Bandidos and being very drunk, blows themselves up when trying to throw the bomb at the clubhouse. They got badly wounded, but survived. Again the police knows where to look for the people behind the attack, and in June Bandidos’ president and secretary are arrested. In July they were sentenced to prison, less than a year for both of them.

On 29th of June, 1996, during Puisto Blues, an international blues/rock festival north of Helsinki, members of Bandidos and Hells Angels would have their last public fight. No one knew it at that time, but the war in Finland was about to slow down, because a lot of the members were ending up in prison. In prison is were the fighting would continue, at least for a while. In July there is a fight between Bandidos and Hells Angels members, and in November there is fight between Bandidos members and other prisoners, where Bandidos president, Marko Hirsma is badly wounded.

While the Bandidos were recovering from their wounds, they could take comfort in that on 5th of October, 1996, Bandidos mc Probationary became Bandidos mc Finland. Allready during the time when they were Bandidos mc Probationary, the original members had been wearing a badge worn on the front of the vest, Axemen, inspired by the axe badge of Undertakers mc.

1997 would be a quiet year in Finland, when it came to incidents between the mc-clubs. They would still make news, but not because of shootouts and funerals.

In April and May, 1997, in all 6 members of Hells Angels mc Finland, got fines for the fight at the courthouse in September, 1995.

In June, 1997, Marko Hirsma, president of Bandidos mc Finland got married. It was a big event with a run through the city of Helsinki, involving a lot of bikers. Some questions were raised about how was it possible for all the Bandidos members who were in prison, to all get leave at the same time.

Because of the very violent incidents in Norway and Denmark, related to the conflict between Bandidos and Hells Angels, there was also in Finland talk about banning the mc-clubs. That in the end came to nothing.

On 25th of September, 1997, peace was declared between Bandidos and Hells Angels, in Danish TV news. The peace was for all of Scandinavia, and was in Swedish, Norwegian and Finnish TV news the same evening.

I know a one guy mentioned in that article about biker gangs in Finland...

Nowadays the Hells Angels keep it kinda low here in Finland, but Bandidos are constantly getting more and more members and are getting active again. Here's a news-link about the latest shoot-out between Rogues Gallery and Bandidos. Rogues Gallery was formed by an ex-Cannonball member (Cannonballs are mentioned in the article), but they are not a biker gang... Nowadays every gang here is under a very close surveillance to avoid the possible shoot-outs.

FBI reports estimate a few thousand H.A. members on the West coast alone. These are divided up into different cells. California, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Arizona, Montana, and Idaho all have their fair share of members. Many H.A. are also Ku Klux Klan members, believe it or not. Though most members are bikers, it is a paramilitary organization at heart. Most of the members are veterans of former American conflicts such as Vietnam and the Gulf War, there are even some now from Operation Iraqi Freedom. Most of these new recruits came straight out of the Marine Corps or Army with psychological disorders and turn to Hells Angels because society won't take them. Many of them have some form of PTSD or psychosis. The H.A. are very well outfitted, full-spectrum body armor and assault gear. Their assault vehicles are usually Ford Econovans that have been modified by inserting homogenous armor steel plating with level IIIA kevlar panels inside. The windows and windshield are usually constructed out of NIJ-certified bulletproof plexiglass. They have SS-109 armor piercing rounds in their arsenal, as well as M4 and AK47 assault rifles. When operating in urban areas they usually utilize lighter weapons such as Uzis, MP5s and MAC-10 or 11 SMGs. These weapons are usually purchased from groups that acquire them from U.S. military installations and ship them all over the world. Much of the Hells Angels funding comes from the sale of narcotics, from which they rake in about $1 billion in profits worldwide each year. It is also very hard for law enforcement to infiltrate their ranks because the H.A. requires an invitation to join.

I dont know about now,but the HAs used to have a whites-only policy when it came to new members.in Hunter Thompsons book he quotes Sonny barger as saying something to the effect that "over my dead body will a black ever become a member"not to mention at one time(I think in the 80s) their was a Japanese Motorcycle club who wanted to patch over and become members, but they ultimately refused to allow it because they didnt want a nonwhite HAs chapter.I do recall reading about a canadian club which patched over, but had a black member who they refused to kick out, they supposedly allowed him to stay, but he cant go to runs with the group or wear a full back patch,he has also never come to the states because numerous american Angels have sworn to kill him if they see him.I dont know how true this story is though,Chuck Zito said on the howard Stern show a few years back that the Angels had no Black members, because no black has ever tried out!!From what i understand all the other major !% crews(Outlaws,Bandidos,Pagans)are whites only

There might not be many black members, but they definately have some members with hispanic ancestory. The Hells Angels are not a racist organization, they are a 1% Motorcycle Club.
The Mongols and the Bandidos have a large number of hispanic members also, especially the Mongols LA Chapters.

Oh and I cant forget to mention the racially motivated Murder of that black guy Meridith Hunter, by a gang of Angels at the Rolling Stones concert at Altamont in 1969.That whole incident started because Meridiths date that night was a White Girl and the Angels didnt like that and started Harrassing him,and of course things escalated after that.

Well you MUST know the rest...you guessed it, gunfire broke out and 3 firemen got shot.

B.C.'s Hells Angels: Rich and Powerful

Canada is a haven for the outlaw motorcycle gang, with more members per capita than any other country. B.C's Angels have mounted an effective public-relations campaign that portrays them as harmless motorcycle enthusiasts, but they maintain a fearsome reputation in the criminal underworld. The rich and powerful Hells Angels motorcycle club in B.C. -- whose members largely eluded criminal charges and flew below society's radar screen for two decades -- are now expanding across the province, bolstering their multi-million-dollar business network and cementing their territorial stake on organized crime.

The expansion is partly because they are protecting their turf from the Bandidos. A rival U.S. outlaw motorcycle gang with deep roots in neighbouring Washington state, the Bandidos have moved into Alberta and are threatening to set up shop in B.C.

Last January a Bandidos member was fatally shot outside a strip club in Edmonton, where the Texas-based motorcycle gang has established a probationary chapter.

But the Hells Angels expansion is also a savvy business move by a successful and powerful organization with a legendary reputation that is growing internationally.

Eight years ago, there were 70 so-called full-patch members and five chapters in B.C. Today, there are 95 members spread across seven chapters: Vancouver, East End, Haney, White Rock, Mission, the Nomads and Nanaimo.

There are also plans for a new Kelowna chapter and there's talk of another chapter in Surrey, where a so-called shadow support club was established months ago.

The Renegades, an outlaw motorcycle group in Prince George that has about a dozen members, is a Hells Angels puppet club.

The Hells Angels, a predominantly white organization, has roughly 2,000 members worldwide, with chapters in Canada, the U.S., Europe, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and South America.

Canada has more Hells Angels members per capita than any other country, including the U.S., where there are chapters in about 20 states.

At the same time as B.C.'s Hells Angels became some of the wealthiest bikers in the country, they've used a public relations campaign to establish an image as a harmless club of motorcycle enthusiasts.

Sure, a few members have criminal records, the club maintains, but any large organization has people who have run-ins with the law. That doesn't make them a criminal organization, the Hells Angels say.

But in the criminal underworld, the Hells Angels have a fearsome reputation.

The trial last year of contract killer Mickie (Phil) Smith heard evidence that one of Smith's five murder victims was Paul Percy Soluk, 33, who had ripped off Hells Angels marijuana-growing operations. Smith said he was told by an Asian gangster named Brian, who arranged the murder, that it was being done for the East End chapter of the Hells Angels.

Police never found the body of Soluk, who was killed in 1999. Smith, a 56-year-old former life-insurance salesman, confessed to an undercover officer posing as a crime boss that Soluk was located in a Surrey crack house and taken to a garage in Surrey, where he was shot.

Smith said a man he called Yurik helped chop up the body and dispose of it.

"He's not an Angel but he works with the Angels," Smith said of Yurik. "I know he's done lots of hits."

Police said the Smith case underscores how Hells Angels distance themselves from crimes that could put them behind bars for life, instead contracting out to other gangsters -- a marriage of convenience, of sorts.

So far, Hells Angels in B.C. have avoided the kind of violent and bloody public turf war that erupted on Montreal streets with the rival Rock Machine biker gang, which sparked the political will and funding to target the bikers and prosecute them on charges of murder, extortion, drug trafficking and making money from prostitution.

Here in B.C., the Hells Angels have operated largely unopposed by rival biker gangs, allowing them to consolidate operations.

"They are disciplined and well led," said RCMP Insp. Bob Paulson, who is in charge of major investigations involving outlaw motorcycle gangs.

Although the Angels have a reputation for violence and retaliation, for the most part B.C. has not seen the deaths of innocent victims caught in the crossfire, unlike Montreal, where the death of a young boy outraged the public, who pressured politicians to take action.

"Arguably there are a number of murders attributed to the HA in B.C., but they're all kind of within their element . . . there was no spillover," Paulson said.

But even without the kind of street warfare that erupted in Quebec, having the Hells Angels spread across B.C. is expected to create spinoff effects from increased underworld activity, including rising insurance rates to cover damage caused by marijuana-growing operations in houses.

The huge profits reaped from the drug trade, police say, have been used by Hells Angels to establish legitimate businesses ranging from trucking firms and retail cellular-phone outlets to travel agencies, coffee bars and hip clothing stores.

Members of the public generally do not know they are frequenting businesses owned by Hells Angels members, since police chose for years not to publicize that information.

And many Hells Angels use nominees -- trusted associates who register companies in their names -- to hide business assets, police say.

Vancouver police chief Jamie Graham vowed to "shine the light" on Hells Angels activity when he took over as chair last August of the national strategy to combat outlaw motorcycle gangs for the Canadian Association of Chief of Police.

The public is also affected by the hundreds of Hells Angels "associates" -- a network of friends of club members who have been known to infiltrate the country's ports, phone companies, the post office and other government offices where private information can be obtained about citizens who run afoul of the Angels.

"The ports is an example where they use their associates to facilitate criminal activity," said Inspector Andy Richards, in charge of the outlaw motorcycle gang unit within the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit, the successor to the Organized Crime Agency of B.C.

"The telephone company, or Shaw Cable or ICBC, that's an example where they've just got this wide-range of contacts ... where they can just make a phone call and get something done, if they need to, for example, run a licence plate," Richards said.

Hells Angels members also have used the collective muscle of the organization to push aside competitors in certain business ventures, he said.

There used to be six or seven agencies that handled strippers in Vancouver, but now two are controlled by the Angels or associates and one is an independent, Richards said.

In the early 1990s, Richards said, the now-dead Hells Angels member Donald Roming was one of the key enforcers helping push others out of the stripper business -- at one point seriously assaulting one of the owners of another agency.

"Without speaking ill of the dead, he was responsible for laying a very serious beating on a 67-year-old man who was involved with one of the independent companies at the time, to the point this guy was hospitalized," he explained.

There were no arrests from these "takeovers" because of the victims' reluctance to report the activities to police, he added.

Over the years, Richards has seen two levels of Hells Angels develop: "You're seeing the original old-timers, some of whom are 9-to-5ers who have legitimate jobs driving a truck."

A lot of the old guys are in it for camaraderie and brotherhood, he said, but most of the younger guys are in it for the money, the power and the respect that the Hells-Angels patch commands. "The younger guys see it as a real entrepreneurial activity to get into the club, to have that protective layer around you, to make money," Richards said.

But not all the old-timers are members just for the camaraderie. Some are masters of setting up shell companies to manipulate the stock market in what are called "pump and dump" schemes -- buying shares to drive up price, then selling before the price begins dropping, police say.

The Hells Angels have also been allowed to grow and prosper in B.C. since members of Vancouver's Satan's Angels motorcycle gang originally became Hells Angels in a "patch over" in 1983. For years, there were very few successful prosecutions against full-patch members.

Paulson points to the East End chapter, a wily bunch of individuals who successfully have eluded convictions, despite a number of charges that ended up in stays or acquittals.

"They've long been held up to be the seminal chapter, not just in B.C. but in Canada," he said. "They're wealthy, they're influential and they're successful at avoiding us."

Only in the last decade has B.C.'s patchwork-quilt of municipal and RCMP police forces reorganized their attack on the Hells Angels. They now point to a dozen or so recent successful prosecutions to show police are finally making inroads.

The RCMP for the second-straight year has identified five priority organized-crime groups to target. Outlaw motorcycle gangs -- essentially the Hells Angels and its puppet clubs -- are in the No. 1 spot for the second time.

The Mounties in B.C. have also developed a list of the top-20 organized-crime figures in B.C. and nearly half are Hells Angels members.

"Prosecutions are tough," Vancouver police Chief Jamie Graham said in an interview. But he pointed out: "We're working smarter than we ever have before."

Some officers feel their superiors blew two rare chances in the past decade to turn insiders into informants and bust some top-level Hells Angels and other high-echelon gangsters.

One of the most shocking examples of how police dropped the ball was the Western Wind debacle, detailed in the recent book The Road to Hell: How the Biker Gangs are Conquering Canada. Written by Julian Sher and William Marsden, the book explains how the RCMP in B.C. had a chance to nail drug-dealers for $330 million worth of cocaine when a Vancouver Island fisherman offered to help the Mounties intercept a drug shipment between Colombians and the Hells Angels aboard the vessel Western Wind, which was headed for Victoria.

The fisherman wanted to be paid $1 million and be placed in witness protection, but the RCMP declined the offer; U.S. authorities intercepted the boat loaded with more than two tonnes of cocaine, but no one was ever charged, says the book, which contains sharp criticism of the RCMP's handling of the botched case.

One of those who worked on the Western Wind file was former RCMP officer Pat Convey, now an inspector with the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit. Convey was among those critical in the book of the handling of the case. "It happened and I'm not going to go into it again," he said in an interview. "Yes, I got my knuckles rapped [for speaking out in the book]. I'm not in the RCMP any more."

Could the same problem arise again? "We're human beings and human beings make mistakes," replied Convey. "I think it's unlikely it would happen again."

Meanwhile, the prospect of a fifth-anniversary party for the Angels' Mission chapter appeared to raise little interest in the Fraser Valley town on Friday. Staff-Sgt. Jack Robinson of the Mission RCMP detachment said extra members will be on duty over the weekend to keep an eye on the party.

He said previous anniversary parties at the clubhouse had been without incident.
