Is Solitary Confinement & SHU program Torture?

Activists explain that Pelican Bay Prison's SHU (Security Housing Unit) program is Torture, in California Prisons. Research shows that 15 days in solitary confinement has serious impacts on the human body physically and physiologically.

It is torture, definitely. If I recall it right, they use the SHU to get a grip on the gangs. Force ppl to debrief and name other shot caller/members. Hence these named persons will be put to the SHU where they eventually debrief and name others as well. That was the concept of breaking the influence of gangs.
But what happened is, that PC Units are bursting and ppl are forming gangs there like the Independent Riders. I don't know if it's true, but I heard stories about PC & SHU units for the PC yards. Things seem to really get out of hand. The system doesn't work at all.

yes absolutely...its a well known fact that mental illness is either induced or exacerbated by as little as 10 days of soiltary confinement, if it wasnt done by the likes of the us/uk government it would definitely come under the heading of cruel and unusual punishment...

when you look at the likes of terrible tom silverstein and the amount of shu/solitary time hes done, he must be some sort of headstrong not to be reduced to a blithering mess - alright what the geezer done aint been pretty, but he had 0 bodies to his name before he got locked up, one of his murders was set up in a 'gladiator' style where either him or the other guy walked, and the prison guard he done was on his arse 24/7 by all accounts...it would have been far kinder to kill him outright, rather than lock him up forever in those conditions

anyone who thinks the prison system is about rehabilitation in general probably believes in the tooth fairy as well...

Yes it's torture but isn't that the whole point of it? These guys didn't get there for stealing a candy bar at the store. These guys are in there because they're either validated prison gang members or they assault another inmate or staff at another institute. So if u don't want to end up in the shu, behave yourself then.

There's no other way to combat the prison gangs, that's for sure. It also isn't stopping them. Without the SHU system, most gang members would have never debriefed and we'd all know little to nothing about the Mexican Mafia or other prison gangs.

is it? so why not go the full hogg with thumbscrews, electrodes on the balls/asshole etc etc...either were above torture as we claim or were not, theres no halfway point...prison in developed countries was always supposed to have an element of rehabilitation, the deprivation of freedom WAS the punishment rather than punishment on top of incarceration
