Lead suspect surrenders in Indiana
Sat Jun 3, 2006 9:57pm ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The leading suspect in the brutal slayings of seven members of one family in their Indianapolis home turned himself in on Saturday after what police described as the city's worst mass killing in at least two decades.

Desmond Turner, 28, surrendered about 7 p.m. at a fast-food restaurant in the Midwestern U.S. city with family members and a clergyman at his side, police said.

Another suspect, 30-year-old James Stewart, was captured on Friday in a citywide manhunt that began after the shootings on Thursday by men armed with at least one rifle or assault weapon, police said.

"He didn't turn himself in out of remorse," Deputy Chief Tim Foley said of Turner. "He turned himself in because he had nowhere to go."

Events leading to Turner's surrender began when an informant called police to say the suspect wanted to give up. After he was brought back to headquarters, police arrested Turner on seven counts of murder and seven counts of felony murder, Foley said.

The murders of the seven family members, including three young boys, resulted from a botched robbery, police said.

The shootings began when 22-year-old Flora Albarran went to the house to pick up her son Luis, 5, but was brought inside and could be heard shouting, witnesses told police.

Police arrived to find Albarran, Luis and five others slain, with the attackers gone. Luis and two brothers were dead in a bedroom, and the bodies of Luis' uncle, grandmother and her husband were discovered elsewhere in the two-story home.

Turner, 28, of Indianapolis, had been paroled after two years of a six-year prison sentence and had convictions for gun possession and other crimes, police said.

Foley said he believed the suspects would face the death penalty. "If I was a betting man, I'd say there's a high likelihood this is going to be a death penalty case," he said.

Several police officials described the killings as the city's most horrific in 20 years.

The media was trying to turn it into a black vs brown situation. Wasn't nothing racial word on the street was the family had a safe with a grip of dough and drugs niggas ran up in there trying to hit a lick. The next night niggas ran up three blocks away in brightwood and shot up three blacks on the same shit.
Shit only happened two streets from the women's prison.
