CHICAGO — Authorities say the Chicago Police Department has moved about 150 officers from a crime unit into more dangerous districts to help fight street crime.

The officers will be divided among high crime areas and dispatched as needed. The officers will report to district commanders.

Deputy Superintendent Ernest Brown says district commanders have intimate knowledge of problems of their districts. That includes things that make people feel unsafe, like shots fired or gang conflicts.

The reassignment started last week.

Police are also using another tactic to curb crime.

On Sunday, Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis (WEES) said the department will expand a high school outreach program to help prevent gang violence.
