A 14-year-old boy was brutally beaten with baseball bats and tire irons then stabbed to death in a Montrose park Tuesday afternoon.
Witnesses say the attackers used bats and tire irons.
Police say he was killed during a gang fight at Chew Park in the 1700 block of Lexington.
Investigators say three members of a large street gang were hanging out at the park when a rival gang showed up.
"They were approached by other members of another, smaller street gang that congregates in this particular area," said HPD Sgt. Mark Newcomb. "These three Hispanic males were bascially ambushed from two sides of the park."
The group of 20 to 30 gang members attacked the three with bats and tire irons. Then a girl stabbed the 14-year-old to death before fleeing.
All of the other suspects also got away.
Homicide detectives were on the scene interviewing several witnesses to the attack.
They told police some of the suspects wore clothing indicating they went to Lamar High School.
Neighbors complain Chew Park has been the seen of trouble in the past.

Houston police say a mob of youths beat the victim before he was stabbed by a teenage girl

Houston Police are increasing patrols in a neighborhood around a Montrose-area park after a 14-year-old boy, identified as having a gang affiliation, was beaten and stabbed to death Tuesday afternoon.
Although no arrests have been made, HPD Capt. Dwayne Ready said, "We firmly believe that there are some people out there with knowledge."
In Ervan Chew Park, known for Little League games and dog lovers, gang members killed rival Gabriel Granillo, clubbing him with baseball bats and tire irons before police said a teenaged girl pulled out a knife and stabbed him to death Tuesday afternoon.
Granillo was with two unidentified youths about 2:30 p.m. when they were ambushed by about 20 members of a rival gang at the park, historically known as Dunlavy Park, in the 1700 block of Lexington.
Police are looking for "a white female, 16 to 17 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches tall, 120 pounds, with shoulder length blond hair," according to an HPD statement. Ready also said the two youths with Granillo are offering some information, and police are following several leads.
Granillo was not a full-fledged gang member, but one of those with him was identified as a gang member, Ready said.
He said Tuesday’s attack seemed to be premeditated. In a nearby duplex, the homeowners told the Chronicle that the three youths pulled up first in a car and retrieved some tire irons. Several other cars then quickly pulled up, and the much larger group got out with baseball bats and other weapons.
The fight was over within five minutes, the witnesses said, and the members of the larger group jumped back in their cars and fled.
"They were approached by other members of another, smaller street gang that congregates in this particular area,'' said Sgt. Mark Newcomb of the Houston Police Department's homicide division.
Investigators found baseball bats, tire irons and golf clubs thought to have been used in the attack. The attackers, including the girl who police said stabbed the boy, fled and were still at large late Tuesday.
Granillo was pronounced dead at the scene. The two males with him were taken to HPD headquarters for questioning, police said.
The teenager's aunt, Sandra Granillo, said his father is in El Salvador and his mother is deceased. He was raised mostly by his grandmother in Los Angeles, she said. Sandra Granillo said she had not seen her nephew since last year and did not keep in contact with him.
Until recently, when he got into trouble with authorities and was placed in juvenile detention, Granillo was living with his father's cousin, Art Martinez.
"I took him out of juvenile last March and then he ran away,'' said Martinez, 39. "I tried to help him. I tried to enroll him in all the things they told me to do at juvenile. But he ran away with his girlfriend. God help him. He didn't have a mother or father to look after him.''
'A little jewel' of a park
Ervan Chew Park is a welcome retreat for its Neartown neighborhood. Described by one neighbor as "a little jewel in the middle of Montrose,'' it features a pool - a rarity for Houston's inner-city parks - basketball half court, small soccer field, dog park and baseball diamond used by Little League. It is not known as a dangerous place, though some neighbors said its character changes at night.
Moraquiel Chavez, a 27-year-old restaurant worker, said he has been coming to the park for seven years with his wife and brothers to play soccer. He said the park he knows is a friendly place that attracts families and dog owners.
But at dusk he sees a gradual transformation.
"You start seeing small groups of people gathering,'' he said, "and you worry about gangs and people like that. It's something that worries me because you never know.''
Resident Kevin McCarthy said he has noticed a growing gang problem since moving to his neighborhood about eight years ago. But nothing matched the level of violence that erupted Tuesday, he said.
McCarthy said he was in the front yard of his home on the edge of the park when a group of people, including one person carrying a machete, raced toward the victim.
"It was just mayhem,'' McCarthy said. "They were just running all over the place.''
No one seemed to notice him, McCarthy said. "They didn't want anything to do with me,'' he said. "I was just sort of a fly on the wall. They could care less about me.''
Police said the assailants, also thought to be teenagers, attacked the victim from both sides of the park.
McCarthy was on the telephone with 911 operators when the victim was fatally stabbed. "He went down and stayed down for a while and then kind of got up and stumbled over,'' McCarthy said.
"The guy got stabbed almost when it seemed like (the fight) was ending.''
The attackers also slashed tires and smashed the windshield of a vehicle apparently belonging to Granillo's friends, McCarthy said.
The girl who stabbed the victim ran toward a dark-colored sport utility vehicle that was parked nearby, police said.
"Everybody left just in time for the police to get here,'' McCarthy said.
The fight that left the teen dead has all the signs of a struggle between members of rival street gangs, police said.
"We do know that gang signs were thrown prior to the altercation,'' Newcomb said.
Investigators haven't identified the attackers, but said some were wearing clothing with Lamar High School insignia.
Mixed neighborhood
The gang attack seems at odds with much of the surrounding neighborhood, a mixture of older bungalows and two-story homes and expensive new townhomes.
Sprinkled in among the affluence, however, are low-income apartments that cater to Latino immigrants. The escalating value of the property has prompted the demolition of some of the more troublesome properties near the park, but the neighborhood's transition is far from complete.
"Once they took down those apartment complexes at Dunlavy and Portsmouth, we saw a dramatic decrease in problems, which had been mostly car burglaries and break-ins,'' said Laura Mullen, president of the Richwood Place Civic Association. "It's been kind of quiet. There have been some problems, but nothing major. Nothing like today.''
Another neighborhood resident, who has lived in the area for seven years, was less surprised by news of the attack.
"here are a lot of gangs around here, a lot of graffiti and homeless,'' said the woman, who declined to give her name.
Though not historically known for violence, the area has shown signs of gang activity with crude graffiti, said Charles Rotramel, executive director of Youth Advocates, a group that counsels at-risk youth.
Rotramel said he has personally observed the beginning stages of gang activity in the low-income apartment complexes near the park.
"It seems like a weird place to be, in the Montrose area, but there has been some gang activity in those apartments,'' he said. "This was probably a set that started recently (and was) an attempt to make a name for themselves, but it just went way too far. It sounds to me like a gang is trying to coalesce around something.''
Granillo's age and the midafternoon time of the attack suggest the suspects were young teens who found an opportunity to confront rivals since school had ended for the summer.
'This is just crazy'
Hours after the fatal attack, there was scant indication that anything had happened. The fenced dog park was full of running canines and their chatting owners.
In the pool, children splashed while adults lounged in nearby chairs, and basketball players scrambled after a ball in the nearby court.
Police placed crime scene tape near the victim's body while concerned residents pressed for information.
"That is just horrible,'' said Diana Mascarenhas, who has lived near the park for about 18 months. "I never expected anything like this. This is just crazy.''
The problems McCarthy said he has noticed at the park, which usually is little more than minor scuffling during a basketball game, tend to run in cycles.
"When things sort of get out of control, we start calling the cops so the heat is on them,'' he said. ``It mellows out for a while, then it flares back up again.''

Houston police arrested a 15-year-old girl Wednesday night in the stabbing death Tuesday of a boy who police said was the victim of a rival gang.
"They did arrest a 15-year-old suspect. She has been arrested," HPD spokesman Alvin Wright said late Wednesday. He identified the girl as a suspect in the death of Gabriel Granillo. She was arrested at her home.
Meanwhile, police stepped up patrols in the neighborhood surrounding a Montrose park where Granillo, identified as having a gang affiliation, was beaten and fatally stabbed by rival gang members.
Officials are concerned that Granillo's death may spark episodes of violent retaliation at Ervan Chew Park, a popular neighborhood park in the 4500 block of Dunlavy, "even though we believe this (killing) to be an isolated incident," HPD Capt. Dwayne Ready said.
Granillo, identified by police as being 14 but whose family say was 15, was with two unidentified youths, including at least one thought to be a gang member, when they were ambushed at 2:30 p.m. at the park, HPD detectives said.
On Tuesday, police said they thought Granillo was in a gang, but on Wednesday said he was "affiliated" with a gang. The teen's family said Wednesday that he was linked with MS-13, which began in Los Angeles among Central American immigrants and now has tens of thousands of members spread throughout Latin America and the U.S.
About 20 to 30 members, primarily Hispanic, of a rival gang surrounded Granillo and attacked with several weapons, including baseball bats, tire irons and golf clubs.
The motive for the slaying remains unknown but investigators think the attack was planned. Because the larger group approached Granillo and the other teens from two sides, Ready said the assault appeared to be premeditated. "This wasn't just one of your random crimes of opportunity."
Although police have characterized the slaying as an ambush, a witness saw Granillo arrive at the park with a baseball bat in hand. Within minutes, he said, friends joined Granillo and the two other boys.
The witness, who did not want to be identified, said the two groups chased each other across the park several times before running into a nearby neighborhood, where they smashed car windows and slashed tires. The scene lasted "an intense 10 minutes," the witness said. "It just kept going back and forth," the witness recalled. "It was like they were fighting over the park."
After he was stabbed, Granillo stumbled about halfway through the park before collapsing near a sidewalk.
"It looked like he tripped over his own feet. He fell down and he never got up," the teenage witness said. "People were just running by him."
Police had described the person who stabbed Granillo as a young white female, about 5-feet-5 inches tall and weighing about 120 pounds. She has shoulder-length blond hair and was wearing a navy blue shirt and blue jeans, police said.
"We also believe there were a couple of Hispanic females with the larger group," Ready said.
Girls in gangs 'not new'
Though some may think street-gang membership is restricted to young men, police officials said that's not the case.
"There is a misconception about gangs that they're only juvenile males," Ready said. "Having a female be a gang member is not something new. It's less common than male gang members, but not new."
Granillo's last known address, police said, was at a Houston apartment complex in the 6200 block of West Bellfort, more than 10 miles from the park. It wasn't clear why he and the two others were at the park at the time, Ready said.
The two youths with Granillo are cooperating with investigators, Ready said.
"They have obtained some information (but) I can't go into the details," he said.
Some of the youths who attacked Granillo wore clothes with Lamar High School insignia but police didn't know whether they were students.
"I can't say with any certainty what high school they go to," Ready said. "I can only tell you with certainty that some of the individuals involved had attire that indicated Lamar High School on it."
School's gang policy
Students at Lamar High School say there are several youth gangs on campus.
"I see a lot of them wearing their colors and stuff," said Yousef Qutob, 16, a junior. "I don't see too many problems or too many fights, but I do see them throwing up gang signs."
Other students say they feel safe because administrators have cracked down on suspicious activity — including sending fighting students to alternative schools and ordering outsiders off campus.
"This school is very safe. They're really strict," Oyuki Lopez, 17, said. "Once they find out you're doing something bad, that's it — you're gone."
Lopez was disappointed that some of her fellow students may have been involved in the fatal fight, which happened less than 30 minutes after the first day of summer school dismissed.
"It's like they're fighting over the stupidest things you can think of," Lopez said.
HISD spokesman Terry Abbott would not comment about suspected gang activity at Lamar High or whether any students may have been involved in the ambush. "I can only say that our police increased patrols in the area," Abbott said.
Harris County Constables beefed up patrols and were circling the campus Wednesday afternoon, alongside district and city police officers.
"We're simply developing leads and we'll go wherever they lead us," Ready said.

A 16-year-old girl accused of stabbing a boy during a Montrose-area gang fight told acquaintances about the fatal incident and later acknowledged it to police, investigators said.
Ashley Paige Benton, who witnesses say was among at least 20 people involved in the fight, told officers she was the only one who stabbed the teen, a Harris County prosecutor said Friday in a juvenile court hearing. Benton remains in custody on a juvenile court charge of murder.
Police said they learned from Benton's classmates at Lamar High School that she had told them about the Tuesday afternoon fight in which Gabriel Granillo was killed.
After hearing prosecutors relate police findings about the incident, Associate Judge Beverly Malazzo concluded Friday that Benton should remain in custody.
The teen did not attend the hearing but is scheduled to attend a detention hearing Monday, when a judge will decide whether she should be released to her parents' custody.
Her attorney, Rick DeToto, said he expects Benton to plead "that she did not engage in delinquent conduct" — the juvenile court equivalent of a not-guilty plea.
District Attorney Chuck Rosenthal said his office will decide later, on the basis of the evidence, whether to request that Benton be tried as an adult.
She was taken into custody late Wednesday at her home in the 1700 block of Lexington, a short distance from the park where Granillo and two others were attacked in what police said was a battle between rival gangs.
Crazy Crew gang
The incident happened about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Ervan Chew Park, 4500 Dunlavy. Granillo's brother Steven, 17, and a friend, Jean Villatoro, 19, said they were cruising in the area with Gabriel, whose family gave his age as 15, and decided to stop at the park.
The two survivors said they were not looking for trouble, but soon were surrounded by more than two dozen teens claiming to be part of the Crazy Crew gang. Family members said they suspect that the Granillo brothers had links to Mara Salvatrucha, or MS-13, an especially violent gang with roots in El Salvador.
Police said the larger group attacked with baseball bats, golf clubs and tire irons. Steven Granillo said he and his companions fended off most of the blows, but that a blond girl sneaked up on Gabriel and stabbed him several times in the chest. He died in the park.
Witnesses said the attackers scattered, with the girl running to a sport utility vehicle that drove away.
In Friday's hearing, Assistant District Attorney Jo Poenitzsch told the judge that Benton told police she was the sole participant in the stabbing. According to documents presented by Poenitzsch, Benton also said that one of the three men who were attacked swung a bat at her just before the stabbing. It was not clear whether it was Granillo who swung the bat.
The Medical Examiner's Office concluded that Granillo died of a stab wound.
DeToto, Benton's attorney, did not speak during the hearing. He said afterward that, though he could not discuss details of the case, evidence will show that Benton reacted after Granillo swung a bat at her. DeToto said it did not appear that Benton was injured in the fight.
He also said he was concerned about Benton's statements to police because she did not have an attorney present. He said he will look into how police interviewed her, to make sure they did not pressure her to confess.
Poenitzsch would not comment after the hearing.
Other suspects sought
Police are trying to identify the others involved in the fight, said Alvin Wright, a Houston Police Department spokesman. Tips from Crime Stoppers and witnesses led police to Benton.
DeToto said he may not seek Benton's release at Monday's detention hearing because of fear that gang members may retaliate against her. Benton's mother also fears retaliation and is not staying in her home near the park, he said.

Teen murder suspect in danger, attorney says
A judge ruled today that Ashley Paige Benton, the 16-year-old girl accused of killing a teen last week during a gang ambush at Ervan Chew Park, should remain in custody because of threats against her. The ruling came after Benton's attorney, Rick DeToto, asked that she be kept in custody and away from other gang members so she doesn't get killed. DeToto said it's probably the first time in his career that he's asked authorities to keep a client locked up, but he's worried that the situation "has the potential to turn into a gang warfare."
We guess that potential gang warfare doesn't include the attack at the park 4500 Dunlavy in which 25 or 30 gang members ambushed Gabriel Granillo and his buddies, beating and stabbing Granillo to death Tuesday. Benton told friends at Lamar High School about the attack and later told police she was the sole participant in Granillo's death, but DeToto is saying Benton (who he claims isn't a gang member) was just trying to defend herself.
Since the attack, DeToto said Benton and her mother have received death threats. Benton's mom has left her home in the 1700 block of Lexington, just down the street from Chew Park, and DeToto has told her to keep out of the public eye:
"Obviously she does support her daughter," DeToto said. "I've advised her, due to the risk of danger to her, not to show up to the courtroom. I don't want her face on the media. I don't want her face in the paper. I don't want her name out there."
Charges haven't been filed against Benton, but DeToto said he expected her to plead that she didn't "engage in delinquent conduct," the equivalent of a not-guilty plea in juvenile court. It could end up being a standard not-guilty plea, though: Harris County the Chuck Rosenthal said Benton may be tried as an adult depending on evidence.

A 16-year-old girl accused of fatally stabbing another teen during a gang fight will remain in custody for at least 10 more days, a judge ruled Monday after hearing of a death threat against the girl and her mother.
Associate Judge Beverly Malazzo gave the order after Ashley Paige Benton's attorney said he had learned of a "highly reliable threat to the lives of my client and her mother."
The attorney, Rick DeToto, did not elaborate or say who had warned him. Regardless of the threat, Malazzo noted that no parents or other legal guardians were present to take custody of the girl.
DeToto acknowledged during the brief hearing that it was "a highly unusual step" for him to ask that his client not be released. Her mother, who has not been identified, has been staying away from their home because she fears retaliation, DeToto said.
Benton wants to be with her family, he said, but understands that she is safer in a Harris County juvenile detention facility and that her mother can't risk coming out of hiding. She talks with her mother daily by telephone, he said.
"We need to keep her on the down-low," DeToto said. "We need to keep her mother on the down-low."
Benton was taken into custody on Wednesday, the day after Gabriel Granillo was stabbed in the chest at Ervan Chew Park in the Montrose area. Police said the stabbing occurred during a gang fight.
Benton is charged in juvenile court with murder. She spoke only once in the hearing Monday, softly saying "Yes" after Malazzo asked if she would tell the truth.
DeToto put his arm around her and later said the girl wept during the hearing.
Malazzo also agreed to DeToto's request that the girl be segregated from known gang members at the juvenile facility. She said Benton's possible release will be considered again at a hearing in 10 working days.

I still think there's some "under-cover" snitchin' going on. How the hell else did the MS-13 catz find out where this chicc lived? Her so called "friends" that she told the incident to, probably told them!!
Then again, that's her dumb ass fault for telling the story to people who weren't there!!!! IMHO, this wasn't ENTIRELY self-defense. For one, if I stab or "pop" you in self defense, I'm NOT fleeing the scene!!! I'd call the police & tell them to come pick yo' ass up, 'cause YOU attacked me FIRST, WITHOUT me provoking you!!! THAT'S SELF DEFENSE!!!
Self defense is NOT, I "help" "jump" YOU; then when YOU try to defend YOURSELF, I stab you & flee the scene!!! She was in the mist of the crowd "helping" the Crazy Crew!!! Her lawyer makes it seem like the' cat who got stabbed attacked her FIRST!!! Nicca please!!!

HOUSTON -- A Houston city council member said the Houston Independent School District could have done more to prevent a teenager's stabbing death, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Council member Sue Lovell said parents have told her that the problems started at Lamar High School on June 6, the day of the stabbing.
Lovell said the students were asked to leave the campus and ended up fighting with rival gang members at Ervin Chew Park.

Gabriel Granillo, 14, was stabbed to death. Police have a 16-year-old girl in custody.
"HISD must step forward, must acknowledge a problem and must reach out to the people that can help them," Lovell said. "Not ignore them, nor shove it off to the neighborhoods where it does become a problem and where people get hurt."
"Police have not indicated that the tragic incident in the park had anything at all to do with Lamar High School," a school district official said. "The victim was not a student at Lamar. The person suspected in the case has been a Lamar student for only a few weeks."

The girl charged with the brutal park murder of a 15-year-old boy was released on bail late Monday leaving the victim's relatives angry and afraid.
Ashley Benton's freedom comes with severe restrictions -- including house arrest and an ankle monitor-- but that's no consolation to the family of the boy she's accused of killing.
"I was not expecting for her to get out of the jail so easy or so soon," said Tulio Martinez. "It just shocked me."
Gabriel Granillo was beaten and killed during a gang fight at Ervan Chew Park in June. As many as 30 kids took part in the attack.
Martinez is still haunted by the image of his nephew being beaten with golf clubs and baseball bats. Police say it was Benton's knife that dealt the fatal blow.
"I know they are just kids but the way this happened -- it's like there was some kind of angry stuff," said Martinez.
Granillo's older brother Steven was with him and is now in juvenile custody for violating parole on an unrelated crime.
"We try to keep him in there just for safety," explained Martinez.
With the release of the main suspect, Martinez said he will leave his nephew in custody even though he's eligible to get out. But for how long?
"We don't know. The longest we can try to keep him out of trouble," said Martinez.
Police say the victim and his brother were members of the notorious MS-13 gang, but family members deny that.
Neighbors who were at the park the day of the fight aren't surprised about Benton's release.
"Feel bad for the family and it's just something that they have to go through legally," said Sunshine Winters.
She still takes her dog Texas to the park and said she's confident justice will take its course.
Martinez, on the other hand, has his doubts.
"The decision of the judge is like: If you got the money, you can kill somebody and get away," said Martinez.
Benton's attorney said despite her confession to police he is confident the facts will reveal that she killed Granillo in self-defense.
No date has been set for her trial.

This young girl has alot to think about. She changed her life and her mother's life by trying to fit in or trying to be hard. Why was she carrying a knife anyway? She had to be planning on take it out eventually.

ya i do, I have lived through the cycles Houston goes through, did the gang thing in the early 90s and mid 90s and did the player thing for the last 4 or 5 of the 90s and around 2001 gangs started enforcing old policies and set tripping again. More bodies are dropping in Houston since the gangs came back, I used to go post up in Blood hoods during the "player" phase of Houston and it was all love as long as it was about respect and money and they knew what hood I was from too. It was still alot of killings over dope and cars alot of jacking for materials and some agg robberies but nobody would just walk up on you and hit u up about what set u were from...there would be a reason for the violence then. But during the gangster times, a banger will hit you up and sometimes even bang on you if he is in a bad mood..so I think that playerism down here keeps people focused on money instead of violence and the only violence you have to deal with is the violence caused by poverty and the drug trade.
