Police: Gang Members Are Behind Officer's Shooting
Apr 16, 2008
BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― Baltimore City police believe gang members are behind the shooting of an officer in the department's gang unit Tuesday.
That brazen crime spotlights an alarming problem as gang members have infiltrated the entire region and are responsible for growing violence. Mike Hellgren takes an inside look.
Police say suspected gang members are likely responsible for the shooting that seriously wounded a Baltimore City officer. Although the shooters have not been identified as Crips, the neighborhood is known as a Crip stronghold.
Symbols include the six-pointed star or inverted crossed pitchforks.
A taskforce estimates 170 different gangs operate in Baltimore City with 1,300 members.
One longtime resident of Lower Charles Village, who did not want her identity revealed out of fear, tells Eyewitness News gangs make her feel like a prisoner in her own home. She lives just a few blocks from the house of a community activist that gang members firebombed three years ago.
"Before it gets dark, you go in your house," she said. "We've been fighting them tooth and nail for the last three or four years."
Also alarming, a taskforce found at least 50 gangs in Baltimore schools, with 500 members in high schools and 500 in middle and elementary schools.
The taskforce said, "These gangs are responsible for street-level drug sales, opportunistic robberies and assaults and do not hesitate to use violence to protect their drug turf."
Gangs are outside the city, too. In 2006, investigators in Carroll County arrested more than 50 suspected Crips. In 2004, a cab driver and minister was murdered as part of a Blood gang initiation in Harford County and the violent El Salvadoran gang MS-13 has a growing presence in suburban Baltimore.

Fucking shame.
These types of things would never happen if it was Russia and not the USA. In the USA people have too much rights, whereas in Russia they would round up a whole neighbourhood and kill them all. The man was doing his job trying to prevent things like this from happening, and it happened to him. Big fucking shame.
