NIAGARA FALLS, NY (WIVB) — The two people accused of murdering a man in Niagara Falls remain in jail Thursday.

Stephanie Raymond, 18, and Shequan Herbert, 22, are both facing a number of charges for their role in Jose Hewitt’s death.

Both pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree murder and first-degree robbery, as they’re believed to be the two people responsible for killing 59 year old Jose Hewitt

Police tell News 4 they arrested the two in connection to an incident that happened on Pine Ave. on Wednesday night around 7 p.m.

According to police, Raymond and Herbert showed up to a building planning on robbing someone living inside.

They were banging on the buildings door trying to get in when Jose Hewitt, 59, unaware of the pair’s plans, began telling them to go around and use the door in the back of the building.

Officers say that’s where Herbert and Raymond attacked Hewitt.

Police say the young couple started hitting Hewitt in the head with a handgun, leaving him there before going on and robbing a man at gunpoint, taking around $4,000 before fleeing the scene.

When police responded to the robbery call, they found Hewitt bleeding and in distress. Police say he died at the scene before an ambulance could respond.

An autopsy said Hewitt died of a heart attack.

Just a few hours later, police located, arrested and charged Herbert and Raymond — neither of whom have any prior charges.

Herbert’s attorney James Faso says there are a lot of unknowns still as he feels everything moved very quickly and the investigation is ongoing.

If they’re convicted of the charges they’re facing, both Raymond and Herbert could spend 25 years-to-life behind bars.

Both are being held on $100,000 cash bail and they’re due back in court next week.
