UPPER GRANDVIEW — A New York City street gang dispute may have been at the root of an attack on an 18-year-old Piermont man this week, Orangetown police said yesterday.
The teen may have been targeted by a street gang member he fought with at a July party in Manhattan, police said.
The young man told detectives after Wednesday afternoon's attack that some friends from the city who were members of the Latin Kings and the Crips street gangs had warned him a rival gang member, believed to be in Bloods, had targeted him, police said.
The teen apparently had been tracked down to Piermont, where his family recently moved, Detective Lt. John McAndrew said. He found a note on his front door at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday that warned him to watch out, he said.
About an hour after he found the note, the teen drove off in his family's Saab and soon after was cut off by a black Nissan at Route 9W and South Broadway in South Grandview, McAndrew said.
He told the police that two men got out of the Nissan, beat him up, sliced him across his forehead with a knife while he was on the ground and then drove off, McAndrew said. He was treated at Nyack Hospital and released.
McAndrew said detectives were investigating the teen's account, but suspected gangs from New York City were involved. The Latin Kings and the Crips are rivals of the Bloods.
"This may have been a retaliatory assault because of the victim's involvement in a fight with another person in New York City several months ago," he said.
The teenager didn't say he had belonged to a street gang, McAndrew said, just that he had friends in two gangs.
"You don't usually just have friends in street gangs," he said. "People are either in street gangs or not. There is not usually a halfway point."
McAndrew said detectives would work with the New York Police Department to track down any suspects in the city.
