Gang get life for ambulance killing

Four gang members have been handed life sentences for the "brutal" murder of a rival in the back of an ambulance in north London.

Eugen Breahna, 22, was pursued through the streets of New Southgate and clubbed to death in the back of an ambulance by a gang of between 15 and 20 men armed with golf clubs and baseball bats in a brutal attack last January.

Today, four men - Gabriel Alecu, 30, Narcis Danila, 18, Christian Sakyi, 19 and an 18-year-old who cannot be named for legal reasons, were sentenced to a total of 69 years in prison for his murder, which the judge described as "unbelievably brutal".

The incident was related to a turf war between two largely Romanian gangs over cash-machine scams.

Mr Breahna was identified by the gang close to Bounds Green underground station, and was attacked and chased before finding refuge in the back of an ambulance which was attending an unrelated incident nearby.

The four suspects pursued him into the ambulance, and proceeded to beat Mr Breahna to death.

Announcing the sentences at the Old Bailey today, Judge Anthony Morris QC said he was shocked by the ferocity of the attack.

"Most people would think they would be safe [in an ambulance] but you were not deterred by his place of refuge," he said.

"There then took place a savage and merciless attack on Eugen Breahna using weapons, fists and feet as he lay helpless on the floor.

"The paramedic who was in the cab of the ambulance said he had never witnessed such violence in his life. He said it seemed as if for everyone who took part in the attack, the focus of the attack was the victim's head. Witnesses described the unbelievable brutality and one described the blows as if someone was beating a carpet."

Alecu was handed a 21-year sentence, while Danila, Sakyi and the 18-year-old will each serve at least 16 years.

Detective Chief Inspector Phil Adams, from the specialist crime directorate, believes that the brutality of the attack warranted the lengthy sentences handed down today.

"This was an extremely violent incident which occurred outside a busy tube station with up to 20 people running through the streets armed with weapons. There can be no doubt that the general public in the area must have been terrified and very concerned for their own safety," he said.

"The victim was pursued into an ambulance, which was in the area on an unrelated matter. Fortunately the paramedic inside wasn't injured as originally reported but it must have been an alarming situation for him to say the least.

"He coped admirably in retaining the presence of mind to attend as best he could to the victim's injuries and call for further emergency assistance. I would also like to thank him for his role as a witness during the court proceedings."

He added that as a result of the murder investigation, police had also succeeded in "disrupting" the fraudulent activities of the two gangs involved in the original dispute. ... searchid=8
