Despite the government’s long-term efforts to combat production of and trafficking in narcotic drugs, the Netherlands continues to be a significant transit point for drugs entering Europe (especially cocaine), and an important producer and exporter of synthetic drugs, particularly Ecstasy (MDMA), although MDMA production appears to have declined significantly in recent years.

The Netherlands also offers conditions favorable to illegal trafficking: a highly developed
communications system and two major seaports, Amsterdam and Rotterdam, where a high
volume of cargo containers is handled quickly and with relatively lax import-export controls.58
Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport also is a European center of narcotics and human trafficking,
allegedly because of lax security controls.59 These conditions, which have made the Netherlands
one of the most active narcotics transfer countries in the world, also are favorable to arms
trafficking.

How has that situation changed today? First and most revealing, Holland ( in the words of senior customs and police officers in the United Kingdom, France, and Belgium ) has become 'the drugs capital of western Europe"--and not just of those soft drugs depenalized by the Dutch Parliament but also of hard drugs such as heroin, cocaine, and now ecstasy.

AMSTERDAM Amsterdam is the crime capital of the European Union, the city's police chief has claimed.

He described Amsterdam as the "number one drug city" in the EU. But he added his officers could intercept more drugs if the authorities in the countries from where the shipments originated acted more decisively.
