Police raid 14 marijuana plantations in Brabant, Netherlands

Police raided 19 marijuana plantations in Brabant on Tuesday and arrested 14 people as part of a major crackdown on the illegal drugs trade.

Police also carried out spot checks on 16 shops which sell equipment necessary to grow marijuana. Four of them were given an official warning and two lost their licences.

In one of the so-called growshops, police found 350 kilos of hashish, 5 kilos of cocaine, several million euros and 10 weapons, the public prosecution department confirmed on Wednesday,

The raids were made under the auspices of a new anti-marijuana task force made up of police, local authorities, the public prosecution department and tax officials.

While private citizens can grow up to four plants for personal use without being arrested, the organised marijuana industry is said to be one of the biggest cash crops in the country, worth between €2.5bn and €5bn a year.

Some 90% of production is for export.
