current styles
Ok I've looked around a little and haven't seen this one addressed, at least not recently. I know that colors/team logos etc have been discussed, so that's not where I'm going.. I'm more wanting to hear about generic gang style trends going on in SoCal. Khakis, braids, jheri curl, chucks, house shoes, etc have all been common at one time and some of it still is.. Just curious as to what's common across the board? Thanks..

Re: current styles
Yeah, bald/shaved heads is still the most common hair style for cholos/eses at least in West LA. I recently saw a cholo with Crip/Blood style braids. It looked a little silly because he had straight hair and he wasn't black. I don't think he was a Mexican Crip because he was with other regular looking cholos.
As far as black gangs go, I went to the Bridge mall in Culver City a week ago and there were alot of younger black gangmembers there. They were mostly rocking baggy white t-shirts and baggy jeans. The only real difference between them and gangmembers from 10 years ago were certain items like baseball hats worn to one side and basketball shirts worn over white t-shirts. Also certain traditional LA gang clothes were absent, like khakis.

Re: current styles
Nowadays, the youngsters just sport white t-shirts with slingshots/wifebeaters and baggy jeans of some sort. In my day, gangster chic was in, so that would be dickies usually in the common khaki/navy blue/black/grey colors that could either be worn as pants or cutoff from the knees (worn as shorts). Fresh Levi's 501's unwashed, starched heavily with crease lines down the middle all the way up to the waistband area. We pressed our white-Tshirts also, either creasing a line down the middle, some kids pressed it with 3 creases. That was common or standard in the 80's era. Our jackets were the cholo jackets that came in black or navy blue. Pendleton flannels were worn, but realistically those were expensive so you either copped yours at K-Mart, Montgomery Wards, Sears, or the swap meet or your older brother/homie...LOL. Okay that's like common gangster wear disregarding race. Now the cholo's wore all those clothes, but they also sported the Charlie Browns in various colors, with hair nets. Back in the day either your nickname was Pelon for you to be bald or you had hair. Tres Flores was used as gel and you combed your hair back with a hand/palm comb, and throw on your hairnet after. LOCS...$5.99 at every liqour store was used too. Now the black gangsters had used the same clothes, just depending on the colors they rolled with. They usually sagged their pants low like how you see some of these new booty rappers do. They wore the same type of clothes. Not til the late 80's did cats start using Starter Jackets to signify their hoods. I remember when most eses had personalized jerseys made at the swapmeet. I remember when crips had also done the same on sweatshirts. For the most part, we all looked the part of a gangster, but had to back that up with some good old fashioned old school representation of pugilism...LOL. Nowadays, kids don't understand what that was about.
Then the 90's broke with Ben Davis clothing, bald heads, and sheer chaos. Clothes weren't much of a signal anymore. Like homie here said, nowadays cats aren't really caring about the colors or clothes anymore. Back in the day, fools were always getting checked for wearing the wrong colors, or being from the wrong hood.
My opinion, clothes don't make the gangster nowadays. Back then we didn't have nothing but whatever was clever. Chuck Taylors we rocked. When Air Force One's came out, it wasn't as much as it was today...LOL. Nike Cortez and house shoes...I mean our entire days clothes were worth about $50 bucks, compared to these kids today rocking $150 shoes and that's without the laces...LOL.

Re: current styles
The is a good topic because I be thinking on this all the time. I guess you can say that your clothes dont make you its whats in your heart. But I'm 26. And when I was a teen. There was no mistaken about who was a banger. Who was a Tagger. and who was a dancer and a Cholo. When I was young niggaz wore Perms, Afro's , Bald Heads, or Braidz. Verry rarely did you see bangin niggaz in fades. Plus everybody sported dickies sweatshirts and either cortez or Chucks. No mistaken about it when you see a nigga you could tell right there in then. I was like if you was in the army you wouldn't were civillian clothing on the battle field would you? Not if you was reppin the Hood to the fullest.
I still got flannels in my closet. Niggaz didn't rock hats to the side. Niggaz wore them sitting right on the top of the head or all the way down covering the eyes.
To be honest I think some of the shit these lil niggaz is on now is kinda funny. I be seeing niggaz ( I aint go say what Hood) all colorfulled out sportin every color of the rainbow on one jacket or a hat. Niggaz used to stick to darker colors back in the day.
See these niggaz now is caught up in the "Bling Bling" Era. S**** I remember when a nigga could rock a chain I dont care who he was niggaz was on the "jack Path" snatchin chains in a minute. Now I see these niggaz trying to hit me up in the swapmeet trying to look like fabulous. I just give up the "D" on them lil niggaz and keep smashin.
I'm glad the younger niggaz from my hood aint caught up in that "Bling Bling" s***. If you gone bang nigga bang. If you gone be a playa be a playa. Pimp be a pimp but mixin all that together is just funny to me. But I see the real young niggaz like 15 starting to go back to the way it was though.

Re: current styles
Yeah Casper thats right . I forgot to mention that. I still rock Brownies and I still were the belts with the buckles with the initials on it.
I dont have all three or four letters like I used to but I just have one. And on acasion I let my belt hang real low with that lil shiny metal peace at the bottom.

Re: current styles
I STILL SPORT KHAKIS AND CORTEZ SOMETIMES AND WHEN I GO OUT WITH THE HOMIES I ALWAYS HAVE THE BROWNIES ON. I DON'T SPORT CHUCKS BECAUSE I WEAR A SIZE 14 SO IT WOULD LOOK LIKE CLOWN SHOES ON ME.
Re: current styles
In England the styles are different. You can often spot a gangster (not 'gangsta', but someone who's in organized crime) over 30 because they'll ware jeans with white tanktops and shaved heads with alot of tattoos, weather they're white or black. In other words, they look hard. In social evnts they'll ware suits with alot of jewelry.
Kids follow different styles. In white working class suburbs Reebok Classic shoes are popular with jogging bottoms and hoodless jumpers with white baseball caps with the peaks pointed upwards. The hardest will often roll up one of the trouser legs or ware a big chain.
In the inner city areas black kids and white kids rock jogging bottoms (often bright colours) along with hoodies and new era hats. Nike TNs have suddenly become really popular but traditionally they've worn astro-tuf shoes. Over the age of about 25 they would ware Stone Island jackets with Evisu jeans and Timberlands.
The harder kids have started (for some reason) waring their jogging bottoms inside out. In Barking and Ilford for a time the hardest kids have started to ware Avirex jackets only on one side.
south Asian kids traditionally ware Letterman jackets and red bandannas with sunglasses worn above the eyes. They've started to ware big white t-shirts and baggy black jeans and I've even seen a few ware zoot suits. For some reason the Mexican style is being immitated by the south asians in London.
The only people to ware khakis with belts hanging down and canvas shoes with bandannas are skateboarders, who are usually from rich suburban families and everyone beats them up coz no one likes them over here.

Re: current styles
Back in the day it seems groups subculters were very creative in developing their own identitity with clothes. Nowadays it seems like its all fabricated by clothing companies and shit.
Re: current styles
Yo in canada, toronto even though the biggest gang city in canada imitates NY style of timberlands/enyce. But here in ottawa we wear "crip" clothes, like chucks, a blue flannel shirt, and some snoop dogg(tm) pants...
