And as the area’s popularity increased, so did its land value, forcing long-time residents to move.
While the plight of the poor artists in the area is most often reported, the once thriving Puerto Rican community is also in the midst of a battle in which its identity is at stake. Facing the same displacement pressure as the artists, the community is fighting what seems to be a losing battle against real estate developers.
hino Garcia, an ex-gang member who helped start a community arts and empowerment organization 30 years ago, is fighting the city to keep the building that houses his center.
Carmen Villanueva, a long-time Puerto Rican resident of the neighborhood, feels pressure from her landlord to move out of her rent-stabilized apartment. Apartments that just a few years ago rented for a $500 a month now go for $5,000.
New cafes, like Leshko’s and B3, charge $2 for a cup of coffee on the same street where bodegas charge 50 cents. Tompkins Square Park, once open 24 hours a day and home to all-night music jams, now closes at dark to keep out the area’s homeless.
Fred Sieden, who has lived in the area for more than 30 years on the first floor of building, no longer boards up his windows to keep out intruders. Villanueva no longer fears being pulled into the darkness of the abandoned buildings.
Notice this is where greenwich and alphabet meet - they cant do anything with the east side jects by the highway or that whole are because its all city housing

The day that I went out to take pictures it was 75 degrees and sunny and people get pissed off when you start snapping photos so I had to stay in my car. I will try and get more pictures on another day. I couldn't get as close as your picture is. Your picture is good. Thanks for posting.

The East Harlem/El Barrio (Spanish Harlem) community stretches from First Avenue to Fifth Avenue and from East 96th Street to East 125th Street. Central Harlem stretches from Central Park North to the Harlem River and from Fifth Avenue to St. Nicholas Avenue. West Harlem, including Hamilton Heights and Sugar Hill, stretches from 123rd to 155th Streets and from St. Nicholas Avenue to the Hudson River
Re: pics of your neighborhood
New York City must be a pretty wild place to live in.
I have heard of Spanish Harlem as well as a place called Bedford Sty.
Try to think of my city as a small country ass city that is poor with some big city crime. Not as crazy as New York City. Would you like to see pictures of Buffalo? It's gonna take a while. LOL! I need a job! Those pics I posted weren't good ones. I'll have to take better ones.
