Police looking for gang members suspected in shootingWichita police have released the name and photograph of one of the three gang members they believe instigated a lunch-hour shooting Tuesday.

The shooting, believed to be retaliation in an ongoing dispute between two rival gangs, prompted the lockdown of three schools in southeast Wichita.

Tuesday's incident occurred at about 12:30 p.m. when someone opened fire on an SUV carrying four people as it was driving near Zimmerly and Apache, police said. Eight shots were fired, but no one was struck.

Two of the three gang members police believe were in the black Honda from which the shots were fired are juveniles, Lt. Jeff Easter said. The third suspect has been identified as 20-year-old Carl Meridy-Burns.

At least some of the occupants of the SUV that was fired upon were Southeast High School students, police said. Officials at Southeast, Curtis Middle School and Caldwell Elementary locked their doors for about an hour to ensure that the shooters did not get inside the buildings.

USD 259 officials increased security at Southeast today, spokeswoman Susan Arensman said, and will have additional security monitoring the area around the school as well.

Carl Meridy-Burns, 20, one of the suspects Wichita police have been searching for in connection with a gang-related shooting, was arrested Friday afternoon in Hutchinson.

The arrest of Meridy-Burns means police now have three of the four people they believe were involved in the shooting near Lincoln and Woodlawn shortly after noon Tuesday that led to the lockdown of three south Wichita schools.

Marquez Barry, 20, was picked up Thursday night at an apartment complex in the 4200 block of South Hydraulic, police said. Meridy-Burns, Barry and two juveniles are believed to have been in a black Honda.

Eight shots were believed to have been fired from the Honda at an SUV.

The SUV was later found in the parking lot of Southeast High School, and two students who had been in the SUV were inside the school.

Southeast, Curtis Middle School and Caldwell Elementary all went into lockdown to ensure the shooters did not get into the buildings.

The four suspects in Tuesday's shooting are known gang members, police have said, and the incident was a retaliation for another burst of gunfire from a rival gang in south Wichita on Jan. 24.

A 17-year-old wanted by police in connection with the Tuesday incident was turned in by his father the following day.

The search for the other teen continues.
Police and school district officials have intensified patrols at Southeast and

West high schools, and increased security at Friday night's East-Southeast basketball game.
