Woman Killed, Child Injured In Shooting At Detroit Church
POSTED: 3:00 pm EST February 26, 2006

DETROIT -- A woman was killed and her child and another man were injured Sunday in a shooting at a church, according to broadcast reports.

The 18-year-old woman was shot at Zion Hope Missionary Baptist Church, and the woman's infant child suffered non-life-threatening injuries, WWJ-AM reported.

Second Deputy Police Chief James Tate said the shooting occurred inside the church. He confirmed that three people were shot but declined to provide additional details.

WWJ reported that the third victim was injured when the gunman tried to escape by carjacking a woman near the church. When the husband of the woman in the car intervened, he was shot, and he was in critical condition.

Police were searching the area for the gunman

Gunman Kills Woman in Church, Wounds Two
From Times Wire Reports

February 27, 2006

A gunman who opened fire with a shotgun during a morning church service in Detroit killed a woman and wounded two people before he shot himself a mile away, police said.

Investigators believe a domestic dispute led to the shooting at Zion Hope Missionary Baptist Church, said James Tate, a deputy police chief. A 9-year-old child, sitting near the woman who was killed, was hit in the hand by a buckshot pellet, Tate said.

As the gunman fled the church, he shot a man trying to protect his wife from a carjacking attempt, officials said.

More than five hours after the shooting spree, officers spotted the suspect, Kevin Lorenzo Collins, 24, walking about a mile south of the church. Collins shot himself to death before police captured him, Tate said.

2nd Victim Dies In Detroit Church Shooting

POSTED: 12:41 pm PST February 27, 2006
UPDATED: 12:53 pm PST February 27, 2006

DETROIT -- A 53-year-old man died Monday of wounds he received trying to protect his wife from a carjacking attempt near a Detroit church Sunday, making him the second victim in incident.

Religious and community leaders were expected to gather in prayer Monday to remember the victims.

Rosita Williams, 37, was killed while attending services at the Zion Hope Missionary Baptist Church -- located at Van Dyke and Warren avenues -- Sunday morning, WDIV-TV reported. Williams was sitting in the balcony with her mother, sister and four nieces, according to the station's reports.

The suspect, Kevin Collins, 22, was waiting nearby and looking for Williams' daughter, Jamika, 19, the mother of his child, the station reported.

"He jumped up and he started shouting at her that 'I'm going to kill your daughter,'" said the victim's sister, Leeyeng Williams. "And she just looked at him and said, 'We're in church. Please don't do this in church.'"

Jamika Williams was not there, Local 4 reported. Leeyeng Williams said parishioners started to escort Collins out of the church, but he turned and fired shots. Rosita Williams was killed in the gunfire and her 10-year-old niece was wounded, according to police.

Collins fled to a nearby house, where he allegedly shot a 53-year-old man while trying to steal a car, Local 4 reported. Police said hours later, Collins used the gun to kill himself.

The 53-year-old man later died from his wounds, Local 4 reported Monday.

The family said Collins was upset about a breakup with Jamika Williams, and it was not the first time he caused trouble at the church. He attacked and injured her several weeks ago inside the church, according to a police report.

The victim's husband, James Cult, said the tragedy could have been prevented. He said he told police where Collins lived and worked.

"My wife was a good woman. She went to church every Sunday," said Cult. "The system failed me, and it hurts."

Police were investigating the complaint by Cult, the station reported.
