the vietnamese actually lost the wars against the mongols.. the mongols successfully invaded and occupied thang long(viet capital) 3 consecutive times in 1257, 1284 and 1287.. what happened next was pure luck.. the mongol armies were hit with a deadly flu and other jungle diseases fighting in vietnamese terrain.. the vietnamese can thank mother nature for that and also thank the cham people.. a people who they later conquered and absorbed.. without the assistance from the chams, the vietnamese could not have drove the disease-riddened mongol armies out..

now what the viet did was smart.. i give them credit for that.. they gathered all their population to the jungles and mountains.. they ravaged their own villages and took every neccessities that was needed by the mongol armies after they invaded.. this gave the viet the upper hand as the mongol armies were dying from jungle diseases and suffered from a shortage of medical supplies to treat their soldiers.. thinking that after they invaded, they would have everything they needed..
