I think that this is THE best foreighn language film eer, and one of the best films ever. I bought the DVD 3 days ago and have watched it 67 times since, and seen something new ever time. All the characters are believable, and it makes you almost feel that your in a Brazilian Favela.

Any thoughts?

this movie was true grit, i need to get this DVD for my collection. This film has award potential if it ever gets recognized. I bet it will get nominated for an Oscar for best foreign film.

I want to the cinema to watch something, on a lazy sunday, picked "City of God" and sat down (on my own) to watch it.

Wow, I got blown away by that film. After 2 minutes, even the subtitles didnt bother me (in Spanish), true story too. Bloody tragic mind,
makes you think of Rio in a different light. Its not all carnival and hats with fruit on. Poverty is everywhere.

Definitely worth 2 hours if you haven't seen it.

The City of God is a brazilian film (english subtitles), about street gang life
in the inner city. The film explores drugs, recruitment, police correption, and the (false) glamour side of gang life. A must see.

I just seen this movie 2day at the theatre this is the best foreign movie ive ever seen it shows you how grimmy other countries ghettos can be them Brazilians get down to they are just like us in the hoods of the U.S that tripped me out. I do agree it does have serious award potential the DVDs supposed to be out in June

first of all, you damn right! this movie is one of best i have seen in my life.
some info id like to share:
-all the guys are really from favellas in rio (except that white kid)
-some are real gangstas some "just" live there
-there is a theatre project in one of the favellas that tries to get the kids of the streets. some of the guys in the movie were casted from that project

I just ordered this. Wasn't easy to find at first. Finally got it on ebay. Hey if you buy this make sure you get Region 1 NTSC so it will work in your unit if you live here in SoCal or thereabouts. Peace.

Don't forget to check out the Special Features from the main menu as they have a two hour documentary where they follow and interview the gangmembers, police, and residents of the slums.

maybe it's because everyone hyped the movie so much but I was somewhat disappointed by it. But the documentary that was in the DVD was crazy. Seeing those favelas built on a steep ass mountain with alleys just wide enough for one person to walk through. And right next to them was that famous statue of Jesus.
