BALTIMORE -- Police have charged the man detained after a police officer's shooting.Baltimore City police said a key piece of evidence has been recovered from the shooting of a police officer Thursday afternoon, but critical questions in the case remain.Late Friday, police charged Jobray Lodge, 20, with first-degree attempted murder in the shooting of Officer Dante Hemingway, 28, who remains in critical condition at Shock Trauma. Surgeons plan to operate for a second time on Hemingway this Saturday after he was shot in the neck, chest and stomach on Thursday.WBAL-TV 11 News I-Team lead investigative reporter Jayne Miller reported investigators recovered Hemingway's service weapon taken in the shooting and another gun believed to be the weapon used to wound him.Miller said Hemingway is assigned to the city's vice squad and was working Thursday in plain clothes. Miller reported it is still unclear what he was doing in the Westport housing complex at the time of the shooting alone, but sources said he may have been targeted.Sources told Miller that the officer was confronted, fired his gun at a suspect, later identified by police as Lodge, then got shot three times.Miller reported that Lodge is related to Jovan House -- the man who was convicted in the 2002 murder of city police Detective Thomas Newman. Investigators do not know if Lodge knew Hemingway is a police officer or if there's any connection between the Newman case and what happened on Thursday.She reported that police initially thought there might be two suspects in the shooting. They are less certain of that now though they haven't ruled out the possibility.Hemingway faces another round of surgery at Shock Trauma this weekend. A police representative said Hemingway did open his eyes on Friday and was able to move his arms and legs, but is still not able to talk about what happened.

Police say 17-year-old Brittaney Johnson helped lure 28-year-old Officer Dante Hemingway to the scene of the shooting. She's charged with attempted first-degree murder, attempted robbery and conspiracy.
Authorities say the charges against 20-year-old shooting suspect Jobrey Lodge include robbery and robbery conspiracy, as well as attempted murder.
Lodge appeared in court today wearing a hospital gown and using crutches. A judge ordered him held without bail.
Hemingway was shot three times in the city's Westport neighborhood. He is still in critical condition. Lodge was wounded in the shootout.

Suspect captured and hostage safe at Baltimore police station
BALTIMORE - A drug suspect has been returned to police custody after holding a clerical employee hostage inside a Baltimore police district station for about three hours Thursday.
The suspect was taken without injury to the suspect or the female employee, said Northeastern District Commander Major Antonio Rodriguez.
"After successful negotiations, the suspect allowed the female employee to leave the room," Rodriguez said.
The suspect, who is 21, had been brought to Northeastern District about noon after being arrested on a narcotics charge. He was wearing handcuffs but was somehow able to maneuver his hands to the front of his body, Rodriguez said.
The man overpowered a male officer and retreated into an office where the clerk was working and locked the door. He picked up a pair of scissors and held the woman hostage, asking only for a couple of cigarettes during the standoff.
Police could not say whether the suspect held the scissors to the woman's neck, during the standoff.
Rodriguez said a hostage situation in a police station was highly unusual. Asked what precautions are in place to prevent such incidents, he said that was under investigation.
"It is unique," Rodriguez said, "but unfortunately, things do happen."
A woman who said she is a custodian in the station watched as the standoff unfolded in the small two-story station house next to the campus of Morgan State University. She said she was cleaning floors when officers told her to leave the building. She refused to give her name because she said she was afraid of losing her job.
"There was no sense of panic," she said. "We didn't run out. People just walked outside."
Police cordoned off the area surrounding the station in a residential neighborhood in northeast Baltimore, about a mile from Mayor Martin O'Malley's home.
The officer who was overpowered was not identified. He was treated and released at Mercy Medical Center with very minor injuries, police spokesman Detective Troy Harris said.
The suspect had a prior conviction for burglary and was either on probation or parole for that crime, Monroe said.
Morgan spokesman Clint Coleman said the affect on the campus was "minimal," although the station sits a short distance away from several dormitories and immediately across from the university's fine arts center.
"No classes have been canceled," Coleman said. "We're just diverting students away from the police station."

BALTIMORE -- Before a handcuffed drug suspect took a hostage at a police station, he tried to hang himself in an interview room, then removed a light bulb and attacked an officer in the dark, police records indicated.
A court official ordered a suicide evaluation Friday for Rodney Bethea, 21, who was held without bail.
WBAL-TV 11 News I-Team reporter David Collins reported a patrol officer arrested Bethea on Polk Street late Thursday morning. Court documents indicate Bethea exposed a bag of marijuana stuck in his waistband as he attempted to adjust his T-shirt.
The officer transported Bethea to the Northeastern District station in Baltimore to be interviewed by detectives. After the interview, Bethea "attempted to hang himself in the interview room with a string," according to police charging documents.
When he failed, Bethea removed a halogen light bulb from an overhead light that was about 3 feet in length, charging documents stated.
An officer then responded to the interview room and noticed the lights had been turned off. That's when Bethea allegedly jumped off a table, striking Officer Paul Southard's head and causing "numerous lacerations" with the light bulb.
The officer was treated and released from a hospital.
After attacking the officer, Bethea ran out of the interview room and into an office where a clerical employee was working. He locked the door behind him and held the woman hostage with a pair of scissors.
After a nearly three-hour standoff, Bethea was taken into custody when a SWAT team "forced the door open and utilized a stun gun" to capture him, police said.
The employee, Jessica Macas-Lowe, was not harmed.
Bethea was wearing handcuffs behind his back, but somehow maneuvered his hands to the front of his body, police said.
Police spokesman Donny Moses said it's not uncommon for suspects to be left alone in a locked room after questioning. Moses said Bethea was in handcuffs throughout the standoff.
"A lot of times when we're interrogating prisoners we let them sit alone for a while," Moses said.
"You see it on TV all the time, you see it in the movies, but you never think it will happen so close to you," said Joseph Young Jr., a student.
Bethea was charged with drug possession, false imprisonment, second-degree assault of a law enforcement officer, use of a deadly weapon with intent to injure and second-degree escape.
His next court appearance in Baltimore on May 16.

A 25-year-old Baltimore man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm in connection with a 2005 gunfight with police.
On top of receiving the maximum prison sentence, Kondwani Martin was also sentence to three years of supervised release after his prison term.
According to a statement presented at Martin's guilty plea, police responded to a report of an assault at the Upper Deck Bar on South Eutaw Street on Feb 10, 2005, and were told by a security guard that a man with a gun had just left the bar. The guard later identified Martin, who was walking across the street, as the man who had the gun.
Officers approached Martin and asked him to stop, but he refused, according to the court statement. As he walked away, a gun fell from his pants leg, and Martin bent down to pick it up. Police ordered Martin to drop the gun, but he ducked behind a car door and pointed the weapon at the officers.
Officers fired at Martin, who ran east on Pratt Street, firing several shots as police chased him and returned fire. Police found Martin lying on a sidewalk with bullet wounds. He was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center for treatment and later released and sent to Central Booking and Intake Center.

A 25-year-old Baltimore man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm in connection with a 2005 gunfight with police.
On top of receiving the maximum prison sentence, Kondwani Martin was also sentence to three years of supervised release after his prison term.

City police are seeking Shellie Leon Smallwood - also known as Markey Elsey - who is charged in warrants with attempting to kill police officers during a foot pursuit May 8 near Smallwood's home in the 2000 block of E. Baltimore St.
Smallwood, 21, was seen selling drugs near his home and was fleeing when he pointed a handgun at pursuing officers and pulled the trigger, police said. The gun malfunctioned and Smallwood escaped, police said.
Anyone with information on Smallwood was urged to call 410-637-8970.

Police say he then used a pair of scissors to hold a civilian police employee hostage for several hours. Bethea eventually surrendered and no serious injuries occurred.

Police say 23-year-old Mark Milligan and 30-year-old Randy Davis fired several shots as the officer were driving in the Pasadena area.
The officers were conducting surveillance when the two men confronted them and began following them.
The officers requested assistance from patrol officers who arrested the two men. They were charged with 1st degree assault, two handgun violations and two narcotics violations.

Shooting of officer highlights park crime

The bullet that slammed into Baltimore police officer Robert G. Cirello's body armor in Patterson Park brought with it not only a rush of adrenaline but echoes of Sept. 11.
Cirello, now 27, remembers rushing to the World Trade Center towers in New York City nearly five years ago as a paramedic. When one of the smaller buildings collapsed that day, he remembers the dust cloud rushing toward him as he and his partners ducked behind an ambulance.
"It was an out-of-body experience," he recalled yesterday.
He felt that same way Thursday night. In the heart of Patterson Park in Southeast Baltimore, Cirello stepped out of his marked cruiser and into the darkness to confront two suspicious men. Suddenly, one of them bashed something on his head. Then a gun flashed at close range.
Cirello, a North Jersey native who joined Baltimore's police force a year after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, had been shot in the upper chest, but his body armor saved him from serious injury or death. He feared that the men would take his gun, but instead they ran off. He called on his radio for help and passed out.
"I wasn't freaking out," Cirello said by telephone. "It was more or less, this is what I got to do. It's what it is. It was the same exact feeling I had during 9/11. Kind of like being in a movie, watching myself.
"I really didn't hear anything. I felt stuff without pain. I felt the bullet; hit me. ... . But I didn't feel any pain till I woke up."

Tressa Everts, who moved to Upper Fells Point six months ago from Silver Spring, said she is shocked by the level of drug dealing and other crime that she has to confront every day on her street. She criticized the drug dealers who seem to take over the streets in the afternoon and disappear as soon as police arrive.
And she expressed frustration that people in the community would rather go inside and lock their doors than confront the issue.
"The problem isn't the police," said Everts, who said her tires have been slashed and feces left inside her car, presumably by drug dealers. "It's the community. The problem is the community turns a blind eye."
Everts said she was the one who recently called the Guardian Angels - a nonprofit group that got its start in the late 1970s in the Bronx in New York City. The group's members, known for wearing red berets and confronting thugs, made its reputation helping secure New York City neighborhoods. It has since evolved into a broader community assistance force, organizers say.
But Everts said few community leaders appear interested in working with the group, and she worries that it's all about politics.
"You hear people complaining about the cops, but I'm like, what are you doing? What are you personally doing to make this better? Don't just sit here and act like it doesn't exist," she said.

The bullet that slammed into Baltimore police officer Robert G. Cirello's body armor in Patterson Park brought with it not only a rush of adrenaline but echoes of Sept. 11.
Cirello, now 27, remembers rushing to the World Trade Center towers in New York City nearly five years ago as a paramedic. When one of the smaller buildings collapsed that day, he remembers the dust cloud rushing toward him as he and his partners ducked behind an ambulance.
"It was an out-of-body experience," he recalled yesterday.
He felt that same way Thursday night. In the heart of Patterson Park in Southeast Baltimore, Cirello stepped out of his marked cruiser and into the darkness to confront two suspicious men. Suddenly, one of them bashed something on his head. Then a gun flashed at close range.
Cirello, a North Jersey native who joined Baltimore's police force a year after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, had been shot in the upper chest, but his body armor saved him from serious injury or death. He feared that the men would take his gun, but instead they ran off. He called on his radio for help and passed out.
"I wasn't freaking out," Cirello said by telephone. "It was more or less, this is what I got to do. It's what it is. It was the same exact feeling I had during 9/11. Kind of like being in a movie, watching myself.
"I really didn't hear anything. I felt stuff without pain. I felt the bullet; hit me. ... . But I didn't feel any pain till I woke up."

A frightening and costly encounter with police unit

They were in the house, Yvonne Rice says, four figures dressed in dark sweat shirts, their hoods drawn tight around their faces. They had rifled through her son's bedroom, she says, where he kept a large amount of cash.
When she confronted the people at her son Craig Kemp's East Baltimore home that chilly November night, Rice says, she thought she might be about to die. Terrified, she bolted from the house, ran down the street and called 911 on her cell phone.
I need the police," she says, breathless, during the tape-recorded call.
But the people Rice saw in her son's home - they were the police.
The encounter described by Rice, Kemp and other relatives was with a "SET" unit that was disbanded in early August amid allegations of misconduct. Led by Sgt. William Harris, that unit of the Special Enforcement Teams worked mostly in plain clothes and unmarked cars in Southeast Baltimore.
Prosecutors have stopped letting the officers testify in court, believing they routinely drew up sworn court papers with fictional or embellished scenarios to justify arrests. One hundred or more cases built by the officers are in jeopardy; city and federal prosecutors have begun dropping them.
One of those dropped cases was against Kemp, who passed a lie detector test about the incident with police that led to his arrest on gun charges. The test, reviewed by The Sun, said there was "no deception indicated."
Interviews with Kemp and his mother reveal another layer of allegations against the SET unit, that the officers searched cars and homes without warrants and took drugs and money.
"The way they were dressed, and the way they acted - I find it all to be very menacing and intimidating," says Christie P. Needleman, Kemp's attorney, "almost like they were a gang."
None of the officers in question has been charged with a crime. None could be reached for comment. Police spokesman Matt Jablow said he could not comment on Kemp's story because the SET unit is under investigation.
Some local defense attorneys, including Kemp's, say city prosecutors have been investigating the SET unit for months. They say prosecutors have interviewed and requested polygraph examinations of several people arrested by the unit.
A source close to the SET unit investigation says that Kemp and others made believable claims about money and drugs taken - but not accurately documented in police paperwork - by the officers, raising questions of theft.

While driving his Chrysler late Nov. 2, 2005, Kemp was pulled over in the 400 block of Clinton St., stopped for speeding, according to the statement of probable cause written by Officer Shakil Moss. Police searched the car using a police dog, and the dog found a gun in a hidden console, Moss wrote.
Police Department communication records indicate that Officer Agustin Rodriguez requested a complaint number for a handgun violation at least 20 minutes before the police dog unit arrived. The apparent conflict shows the officers might have searched the car first, then called for a police dog unit to validate their search.
Kemp says he saw an officer find his loaded .38-caliber revolver, package it and put it in the trunk of the marked police car. Then, he says, he saw officers retrieve the gun, take it out of the package and return it to his car, just before the police dog arrived.
He tested "truthful" about that scenario in the polygraph examination.
Craig Kemp, 24, graduated from Lake Clifton High School and studied pharmacy at the Community College of Baltimore County. Court records show he has no criminal record. The father of a 5-year-old boy and newborn girl, Kemp says he works in construction and sells cars.
In April 2005, Kemp received about $34,000 in a worker's compensation settlement and offers documents that verify that. Kemp says that he is a big tipper at a local strip club and that he recognized one of the officers who pulled him over Nov. 2 as a fellow patron. Kemp thinks the officers might have targeted him.
During the traffic stop, officers asked Kemp whether he had guns or drugs at his home, according to his pre-test interview with the polygraph examiner. He told the officers he did not, though he noted he had cash there, the polygraph report says.
Kemp says he had $28,000 cash locked in the bedroom of his rented home the night he was pulled over. He says his bedroom was unlocked and in disarray after the plainclothes police officers searched it. He says his money was missing.
"They probably figured I was a drug dealer and I wasn't going to say anything about the money," he says. "But that was my own money. They took it. That put me behind on my bills, put me in debt."
His lawyer, Needleman, says Kemp was "devastated about the money" when he contacted her about his arrest.
But for tactical reasons, she says, she told him not to pursue criminal charges or file an internal complaint about the money. She says she thought the officers might not show up for his trial, meaning Kemp's gun case would be dismissed.
Instead, prosecutors dropped charges Monday, not giving a reason in court.
From the beginning of the traffic stop, Kemp says, something didn't feel right about the officers. There were six of them, he says, two in police uniforms and four in dark civilian clothing. He says they ordered him and his passenger, Sean Cozart, out of the car. The officers took Kemp's key ring and his cell phone, he says.
The officers ordered Kemp and Cozart to take off their shoes and socks and later handcuffed them and had them lie in the middle of the street, Kemp says.
Kemp says the officers asked for his address - he gave his mother's - and rummaged through papers in his car until they found a utility bill with his Highland Street address. Kemp says he watched as the plainclothes officers took his keys and said they were heading to his house.
"I was scared," he says. "I was trying to figure out [what was] going on. I didn't know what I got caught up in."
Meanwhile that night, Kemp's relatives say, they were beginning to worry. It's a small neighborhood, and Kemp was in handcuffs barely a block from his home.
His mother, Yvonne Rice, says one of her daughters called her at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where she has worked for seven years, to tell her Kemp might be in trouble.
She says she left the hospital and tried to call Kemp using the walkie-talkie feature on their cell phones. At one point, she says, an unfamiliar male voice told her, "Craig is unavailable," and hung up.
Rice says that she, her daughter Crystal Kemp and the mother of one of Craig Kemp's children met and decided to check Kemp's house.
When Rice used her key to try to open the door, she says, she saw dark-clad people inside. The women took off running.
"I was scared," Crystal Kemp says. "I didn't know who they were."
Two caught up with Crystal Kemp and the mother of one of Kemp's children. They shouted that they were police, and one later showed a badge that had been tucked inside the sweat shirt, Crystal Kemp says.
Rice says she ran the other way and was pursued by the other two people. As she was on the phone with 911, she says, they hollered out that they were police officers, she says.
When the 911 operator called back, she asked Rice whether the police were already there. Rice said yes.
"I had talked to the police, I mean, I seen somebody moving and, um, my daughter said the police in my son's room," she says, panting, during the taped conversation. "I say, Lord Jesus."
All three of the women were taken back to Kemp's house by the people they now believe to be plainclothes officers.
Rice says she had an asthma attack and her stomach became upset during the encounter with the people who identified themselves as police.
She and Crystal Kemp say they were at the house for about an hour with the group, who at times asked questions about Kemp and at times seemed relaxed, even reclining on a couch and flipping through channels on Kemp's big-screen television.
Back in the 400 block of Clinton St., where Kemp says he and Cozart were still in handcuffs, Kemp says officers told him, "We have your mother and your sister at your house."
He says he was taken back to his house and asked to sign a warrant to consent to a search of his house. He says he did so, but only because it was clear that the search had already taken place.

Officer hit by car; partner shoots driver

A plainclothes city police officer was injured last night in Northwest Baltimore when he was struck by a car used in a suspected drug deal. The driver of the vehicle was then shot by the injured officer's partner, police said.
Both of those hurt in the incident were taken to Sinai Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, said Officer Troy Harris, a police spokesman.
About 8:10 p.m., officers in an unmarked car in the 2600 block of Violet Ave. observed what appeared to be drug activity between two men in a vehicle, Harris said.
The officers followed the car to an alley near the 2600 block of Cottage Ave., where it stopped and one of the officers approached on foot, Harris said.
"When the officer neared the car, the driver sped up, striking the officer, who landed on the hood before falling to the pavement," Harris said. The officer suffered leg injuries, he said.
Harris said that when it appeared the car was going to run over the fallen officer, the partner fired at least one shot into the car, hitting the driver in the arm and wrist.
Before the wounded suspect was taken to the hospital, paramedics found suspected drugs in his pockets, said police Col. Frederick H. Bealefeld, head of the detective division.
The driver's companion was arrested without incident.

"It is unique," Rodriguez said, "but unfortunately, things do happen."
A woman who said she is a custodian in the station watched as the standoff unfolded in the small two-story station house next to the campus of Morgan State University. She said she was cleaning floors when officers told her to leave the building. She refused to give her name because she said she was afraid of losing her job.
"There was no sense of panic," she said. "We didn't run out. People just walked outside."
Police cordoned off the area surrounding the station in a residential neighborhood in northeast Baltimore, about a mile from Mayor Martin O'Malley's home.
The officer who was overpowered was not identified. He was treated and released at Mercy Medical Center with very minor injuries, police spokesman Detective Troy Harris said.
The suspect had a prior conviction for burglary and was either on probation or parole for that crime, Monroe said.
Morgan spokesman Clint Coleman said the affect on the campus was "minimal," although the station sits a short distance away from several dormitories and immediately across from the university's fine arts center.

A 21-year-old man who pleaded guilty last month to assaulting a law enforcement officer, false imprisonment and escape was sentenced yesterday in Baltimore District Court to four years in prison.
Rodney M. Bethea admitted that he took a civilian police employee hostage in April at the Northeastern District station in Baltimore, where he was being interviewed after an arrest on a charge of marijuana possession.
Yesterday in court, the employee submitted an impact statement that was reviewed by The Sun. In it, she describes the fear she felt and how the attack has made her tense and anxious.
Bethea first tried to hang himself in an interview room and then assaulted an officer with a 3-foot halogen light bulb, court documents show. He ran a room where the civilian was working, locked the door and armed himself with scissors and a letter opener, the documents show.
"I didn't know what to expect and thought my life was over," the employee's impact statement reads. "My life and family flashed through my head."
After a two-hour standoff, SWAT team members forced the door open and used a stun gun to subdue Bethea.
His sentence includes four years for false imprisonment, two years for assault and two years for escape, all to be served concurrently. Bethea can be eligible for parole after serving half of that time.

Man Convicted Of Shooting Police Officer
BALTIMORE, Md. -- A Severn man was found guilty in federal court of the 2004 shooting of an Anne Arundel County Officer and dealing crack with a gang known as the Pioneer City Boys.
Calvin Ignatius Savoy, 29, was found guilty of conspiracy to distribute crack cocaine and the use of a firearm in relation to a drug-trafficking crime, officials said.
Sentencing is scheduled for January.
Officer William Hicks was shot in the arm after checking on a fight outside a bar on Route 175 near Fort Meade on Sept. 11, 2004, officials said. He has since recovered and returned to duty.
Anne Arundel County Prosecutor M. Virginia Miles told The Annapolis Capital that Hicks was shot at point-blank range by Savoy while the officer was trying to take a gun away from another man.
Savoy had shown off a gun inside the bar and later tried to cover up the shooting by using bleach on his clothes and urinating on his hands, Miles said.
Savoy and six other members were also indicted a year after the shooting for their role in a drug operation, officials said.
Miles told jurors that the men used violence and intimidation to control the Severn drug market and keep people silent.

On July 18, 2005, Reginald McKever, 20, of the 4700 block of Greencrest Road and another man approached Baltimore Officer Kevin Simmons, who was sitting on a split rail fence talking on his cell phone in the 5300 block of Goodnow Road, prosecutors said.
Simmons was off duty but had his police identification and department-issued handgun. McKever pointed a gun at him and asked him to "kick it out" in an apparent robbery attempt, prosecutors said.
Simmons ran for cover and was shot once in the foot.
McKever is scheduled to be sentenced in January by Circuit Judge Allen L. Schwait. The other assailant has not been identified, prosecutors said.

A Maryland Transit Administration police officer fatally shot a man last night who was trying to rob a passenger near the Reisterstown Road Plaza subway station, police said.
Police said the robbery suspect pulled out a gun after being confronted, forcing the officer to fire in self-defense.
The officer was part of a team of seven plainclothes officers who were patrolling the area last night in response to a wave of robberies, said Capt. David Marzola of the transit police.
Police reported seeing the suspect, accompanied by two other men, approach a passenger leaving the subway about 7 p.m. The man pressed a pistol into the passenger's back and then rifled through his pockets, Marzola said.
The officers chased the three men. The man with the gun ran down the train tracks, pursued by one of the officers, police said.
When the man turned around with a pistol, the officer shot him. The man was taken to Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:31 p.m., Marzola said.
Police did not identify the man or the officer last night. Following department policy, the officer has been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of an investigation, police said.
Marzola said police were searching last night for the two other men, who were last seen running down Patterson Avenue toward the Reisterstown Road Plaza.

Police: Suspect Shot Connected To Other Robberies
(WJZ) Baltimore, MD An expired bus ticket cost a robbery suspect his life Saturday, according to police who say they were forced to shoot and kill the suspect at the Reisterstown Metro Station.
Now police believe the suspect was connected to a string of robberies in the area recently.
Police say the undercover officer spotted the suspect pointing a gun at one commuter as he walked home, and saw two other suspects watching from the grass.
"He was approached by an African-American male who put a gun into the victim's back and advised him to kick the money out," says Capt. David Marzola of MTA Police.
The 34-year-old male victim gave up all he had, an expired bus pass, and the suspect ran off.
"The suspect turned toward the officer, pulled out a silver plated pistol, pointed it at the officer - the officer asked him to drop it. The gentleman refused, at which time the officer discharged his weapon," says Marzola.
Commuters were already on edge after two armed robberies and one assault since last Monday.
The latest violence comes on the heels of a deadly stabbing at the North Avenue Light Rail Station. Nicole Edmonds, 17, lost her life there just days ago.
"We are doing everything in our power to make sure the people who are responsible for nicole's death are arrested, that justice is served," says Matt Jablow of Baltimore City Police.
Police now say they're increasing security in both trains and at the stations.
But some commuters say it will take more than that.
"People have to go to their cars," says Lakesha Witherspoon. "Anything can happen cause it's totally dark over there."
Police are still looking for the other two suspects, and are urging commuters to call if they see anything suspicious.
The officer who fired the fatal shot has been put on administrative leave.

Teen Pulls Shotgun On Officers

A Howard County teen will face charges that allege he tried to pull a shotgun on three officers.
Howard County police said 16-year-old Joshua Alvandi had a 12-guage shotgun in his waistband on the morning of Nov. 1.
Police said they arrived at the scene on the 8400 block of Woodward Street in Savage at 10:30 a.m.
There had been complaints about suspicious people in the area and when police confronted Alvandi and two others, Alvandi tried to pull out the gun, police said.
However, police were able to get to the boy before he had a chance to draw the gun.
Alvandi faces three counts of first-degree assault.

The other men ran away. One jumped in a van and drove it directly toward the officer, who fired shots at him, police said.
The two suspects the officer shot were taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center. The one who was shot in the torso was in critical condition. The van driver suffered graze wounds to the head, police said.

Brothers held in robbery try

Three brothers have been arrested and charged with the attempted murder and attempted armed robbery of an off-duty Baltimore police detective Saturday night as he walked toward his Federal Hill home, according to charging documents.
Sgt. Christopher Nyberg, a 13-year member of the force, was accosted by four people and shot two of them. One suspect remained in critical condition yesterday at Maryland Shock Trauma Center, with charges pending, authorities said.

Police said Nyberg was walking home when four males, one armed with a knife, stepped from an alley near Gittings Street and Battery Avenue and grabbed him around the neck.
After the knife was placed at Nyberg's neck, the sergeant pulled away, drew his off-duty gun and shot one of the males, identified by police only as Frankie Lewis Gillus, in the upper body.
Police said Glenn Thomas entered a van parked in the alley and attempted to run down Nyberg, who fired more shots, grazing Thomas' head. Glenn Thomas and Gillus were taken to Shock Trauma, where Thomas was treated, released and arrested. The other suspects took a cab home, police said.
Gary and Travis Thomas were arrested Sunday when they attempted to visit Gillus at the hospital, and the three brothers were being held yesterday at Central Booking and Intake Center, police said. Nyberg remained on administrative duty while the incident is being investigated.

An off-duty Baltimore police officer shot two men after they attempted to rob him in South Baltimore early yesterday, police said.
The officer was walking to his home at 3:40 a.m. when four men jumped out of an alley near Gittings Street and Battery Avenue, said police spokesman Troy Harris.
One man held a knife to the officer's neck and demanded money. The officer, who was not in uniform, fought the man off then shot him in the upper torso, Harris said.
The other men ran away. One jumped in a van and drove it directly toward the officer, who fired shots at him, police said.
The two suspects the officer shot were taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center. The one who was shot in the torso was in critical condition. The van driver suffered graze wounds to the head, police said.
Police were still searching for the other two suspects. They have not released the identities of the hospitalized suspects or the officer. The officer has been placed on administrative duty pending an investigation, Harris said.[/quote]

Three brothers have been arrested and charged with the attempted murder and attempted armed robbery of an off-duty Baltimore police detective Saturday night as he walked toward his Federal Hill home, according to charging documents.

Skyteam 11 was over the scene at Hopkins Place when the officer dressed in street clothes was hit as she crossed at Baltimore and Gay streets.
It is unclear if the officer was a plainclothes officer or if she was off duty.
The officer's condition is unknown.

Police tell Eyewitness News an off duty officer was shot shortly after their shift. The shooting took place on the 5700 block of the Alameda.
The officer's condition is not known as this time.
