It happened on the Alameda just after 12-30 am.
Officials say officer Momodu Gondo was shot as he aproached his home. Residents are concerned that if an officer can be targeted, who's next?
Baltimore City police say there was an exchange of gunfire, and officer gondo was struck a number of times. He required over 3 hours of surgery at Shock Trauma overnight.
Police have increased patrols in the area while they search for suspects.
A tip that the suspect might be just a few blocks away in a row home on Cameron Road turned out to be false. Now police go back to their initial tactics. They are canvassing the community in hopes of finding the person responsible for pulling the trigger on a cop.
Police say the motive for this officer's shooting is not clear. Residents say it may have been robbery.

Sheriff's cruiser set ablaze

The marked police cruiser of an off-duty Harford County sheriff's deputy was set ablaze yesterday morning outside a Southeast Baltimore home, city police said.
The deputy parked the cruiser on Parnell Avenue shortly after midnight. About 5:30 a.m., a neighbor awoke after hearing the vehicle's car alarm and saw the car on fire, police said. Police investigators determined that it was arson, according to Lt. Tim Devine, of the Southeastern District.
Damage to the 2000 Ford Crown Victoria was estimated at $5,000 to the vehicle and $5,000 to its contents.
A sheriff's office spokesman said the cruiser belonged to a deputy who joined the agency in 2004 and was assigned to the county's southern precinct. Both agencies declined to release the deputy's name.

Why was he there? I read the girl lured him but still???? He was probably a dirty cop. You can't always believe what you read in the newspaper. I can put a article up that makes the suspect sound so bad. But I know the real story and wht the newspaper left out or wasn't told about. No matter what he was there for other business besides police work; he is probably extorting money from the dealers and he got greedy. Baltimore police pleaded Thursday to hear again from a man who called 911 and gave promising leads about a shooting of a police officer before hanging up.
Detective Lt. Scott Baker, a supervisor in the homicide unit, said the male tipster called 911 twice Wednesday afternoon, a day after Officer Momodu Gondo was injured in a shooting near his Northeast Baltimore home.
The tipster's first call came from a payphone whose location police declined to disclose; the man gave some information and then hung up. A short time later, the man called from another phone -- possibly a cell phone -- and began giving more information before he either abruptly hung up or was disconnected.
At a news conference, Baker implored the man to call the department's homicide division directly, at 410-396-2100. He would not elaborate on the quality of the in formation that the man provided, but did say it piqued investigators' interest.
"Please call again," Baker said. "We invite calls from any source, including those who wish to remain anonymous."
The officer was approached by two men after he parked his car in the 5700 block of The Alameda about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday. One of the men opened fire with a handgun and Gondo, who wore a coat over his uniform and still had on his police-issued bullet-resistant vest, pulled out his department-issued handgun and returned fire, police said.
Gondo was shot twice in the back, once in the bowel and the other a graze wound, police said. Police officials did not disclose how many shots Gondo fired, and said they were unsure if he struck either suspect.
The officer remained at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center Thursday and has been cooperating with investigators, Baker said. He was last listed in serious condition.
Police officials said that area of The Alameda has seen several armed robberies in recent months. Police arrested three men in October who they suspected were responsible for some of the robberies.
In addition to calling the homicide office, anyone with information about the officer shooting, or other crimes in the region, can call Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7-LOCKUP. Tipsters could be eligible for a reward of up to $2,000.
Gondo's shooting is the third non-fatal shooting of a Baltimore police officer this year.
In September, Officer Robert G. Cirello was shot while patrolling Patterson Park in September, but his body armor saved him from serious injury. Two men suspected in that shooting remain at large.
In March, Officer Dante Hemingway was shot in the neck, chest and stomach in the South Baltimore's Westport neighborhood while on his lunch break. Hemingway had gone to visit a woman he had recently met, and was shot by a man recruited by the woman's jealous lover.
Two people in that case were arrested and pleaded guilty in the attack in October.

Moses said another officer fired his service weapon into the vehicle but no one was injured.
Everyone in the car was arrested once the car was stopped at Hamburg and Russell streets.
Moses said the sergeant is receiving treatment for an injury to his shoulder.
The incident is still under investigation.

A Baltimore police officer was injured this afternoon after he was struck by a car that sped away during an attempted arrest on a drug charge on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in West Baltimore, police said.
Officers chased the car, a Ford Crown Victoria, south on MLK to Russell and Hamburg streets, near M&T Bank Stadium, where an officer said he saw the man reach for what he thought was a weapon. Sgt. Melvin Russell said the officer fired one shot at the car, striking the hood but no one inside.
Russell said the incident started shortly after 1 p.m. when police stopped the Crown Victoria on a suspected drug violation and began to question the three occupants. The driver was arrested, but the man sitting in the passenger seat managed to reach his leg across, hit the gas pedal and take off, Russell said.
The car struck a police sergeant, who suffered minor injuries and was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, Russell said. Other officers chased the car less than a mile and stopped it near the stadium, where the officer fired at it. The passenger was arrested.
Agent Donny Moses, a police spokesman, said officers recovered illegal narcotics, a handgun and cash after a search of the vehicle.

State trooper shot, wounded in Balto. Co. raid
Suspect killed as officers attempted to serve warrant at Woodlawn home

A Maryland state trooper was shot and critically wounded early today inside a Woodlawn home when a gun battle broke out as police tried to arrest a man suspected of invading a home in Eldersburg and kidnapping the homeowner's son.
Police said the gunman was shot and died of his wounds.
Trooper 1st Class Eric D. Workman, 36, assigned to the Westminster barracks, was on life support this morning at Maryland Shock Trauma Center. Dr. Thomas Scalea, the physician-in-chief, said Workman had been shot in the left shoulder and the bullet pierced his chest and lung.
"There is significant injury to his left lung, spleen and kidney," Scalea told reporters at a news conference this morning. "This is not over by a long shot. We've got to get him through the next hours and days."
Scalea called the circumstances particularly painful because he had saved Workman's life once before. The trooper, a nine-year veteran, was run over by a car several years ago, and he and the doctor became close friends. In fact, Workman visited Shock Trauma several weeks ago.
"I can't tell you how sorry I am to be in this position again," Scalea said.
This morning, dozens of police officers and family members visited Shock Trauma, near Baltimore's downtown. Maryland State Police Superintendent Col. Thomas E. "Tim" Hutchins was at the hospital and said he called Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. Baltimore Police Commissioner Leonard D. Hamm also visited.
Workman is single and has no children.
Workman was leading the investigation into the home invasion that occurred Thursday night. Police said two men broke into the Eldersburg home just after 9 p.m., threatened a homeowner's son, daughter and the daughter's fiance and then restrained them with handcuffs and duct tape.
When the 25-year-old son returned to the home in the 2000 block of Sunset Drive he also was handcuffed. Police said one of the men then drove the 25-year-old to a Randallstown check-cashing and bail bonds business in the 8100 block of Liberty Road, where he worked, and forced him inside at gunpoint.
Baltimore County police rescued the victim at the Liberty Road business after receiving a tip from his family. Arrested fleeing the scene was Ronald J. Presco, 36, of the 3000 block of Arunah Avenue in Baltimore, police said. The second assailant fled the Eldersburg home before state police arrived.
Hutchins said this morning that it was this man Workman and other officers on a warrant fugitive task force were looking for today. They had searched several homes before going to a house in the 5500 block of Forest Park Avenue in Woodlawn shortly after 5 a.m.
Police said the occupants of the home let officers inside and told them the suspect was upstairs. As officers climbed the stairs, Hutchins said the suspect opened fire. Two officers returned fire, but not Workman.
The suspect, 38, was not immediately identified. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said they believe the man who was shot is the suspect from the home invasion, but could not immediately confirm it.
The home in which the shooting occurred is an end unit in a line of four brick rowhouses. The yard of the home is decorated for the holidays, with a lighted snowman and a reindeer display and stockings hung in the second-floor windows. A miniature, white Christmas tree could be seen through a large, first-floor window.
A man who lives next door to the home said he was awakened shortly before 5 a.m. when he heard a noise so loud that he mistakenly thought someone was knocking on the door to his home.
The man, Lonzy "Gabriel" Brewton Jr., said he heard banging sounds against the wall, then two shots, and later saw the trooper being taken out of the house on a stretcher.
A man and a woman, in their 40s or 50s, and two children live in the house where the shootings occurred, Brewton said.
Residents gathered near the crime-scene tape, trying to piece together what had happened. "We don't have this stuff up in our neighborhood. This is shocking to me," said Sherelle Daniels, a 35-year-old nursing assistant who lives in the area.

Presco, 36, of the 3000 block of Arunah Avenue in Baltimore, police said. The second assailant fled the Eldersburg home before state police arrived.
Hutchins said this morning that it was this man Workman and other officers on a warrant fugitive task force were looking for today. They had searched several homes before going to a house in the 5500 block of Forest Park Avenue in Woodlawn shortly after 5 a.m.
Police said the occupants of the home let officers inside and told them the suspect was upstairs. As officers climbed the stairs, Hutchins said the suspect opened fire. Two officers returned fire, but not Workman.
The suspect, 38, was not immediately identified. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said they believe the man who was shot is the suspect from the home invasion, but could not immediately confirm it.
The home in which the shooting occurred is an end unit in a line of four brick rowhouses. The yard of the home is decorated for the holidays, with a lighted snowman and a reindeer display and stockings hung in the second-floor windows. A miniature, white Christmas tree could be seen through a large, first-floor window.
A man who lives next door to the home said he was awakened shortly before 5 a.m. when he heard a noise so loud that he mistakenly thought someone was knocking on the door to his home.
The man, Lonzy "Gabriel" Brewton Jr., said he heard banging sounds against the wall, then two shots, and later saw the trooper being taken out of the house on a stretcher.
A man and a woman, in their 40s or 50s, and two children live in the house where the shootings occurred, Brewton said.
Residents gathered near the crime-scene tape, trying to piece together what had happened. "We don't have this stuff up in our neighborhood. This is shocking to me," said Sherelle Daniels, a 35-year-old nursing assistant who lives in the area.

The man suspected of critically injuring a Maryland state trooper in a shootout in a Baltimore County home this morning had been released from prison in June after serving a sentence for drug possession.
Steven Tyrone Jones, 38, was killed by police in the shootout this morning. He was released from the Eastern Correctional Institute, a prison on Maryland's Eastern Shore, after serving a sentence stemming from a 1994 conviction.
Jones was being sought by police in connection with a home invasion in Eldersburg last week.
Police, acting on a tip, tracked him down at a home in Woodlawn about 5 a.m. today. A gunbattle ensued, and Jones allegedly shot Tfc. Eric D. Workman, 36. The officer was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he remains on life support.
Dr. Thomas Scalea, the physician-in-chief, said Workman had been shot in the left armpit, and the bullet pierced his lung and is lodged in his abdomen. He was wearing a ballistic vest.

Baltimore police announced today that they arrested a 24-year-old man and charged him with attempting to kill a rookie city police officer who was shot twice near his home earlier this month.
The suspect, Collin Hawkins, 24, has been charged with first-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault and two handgun violations, according to a statement released by city police. Police did not say when he was arrested or charged, and released no additional information.
Officer Momodu Gondo, 23, was shot twice in the back as he was arriving at his home in the 5700 block of The Alameda just after midnight on Dec. 5. The officer was off-duty, but wearing his police uniform and ballistic vest under an overcoat. He was approached by at least one gunman who he struggled with. A Baltimore County police officer was shot this morning after an attempted robbery at a Perry Hall-area grocery store, and a suspect who had taken refuge in a shed was later found dead, authorities said.
The officer who was shot was identified as David Garner, 39, a 16-year veteran of the department and a member of its K-9 dog unit. He was shot while chasing down the suspect, who authorities said had just tried to rob a Super Fresh supermarket at the Perry Hall Square Shopping Center.
The suspect had been barricaded in a shed in a nearby neighborhood, off of Belair Road. Gunfire erupted from the shed when officers approached, wounding the officer, police said. A spokesman said officers returned fire.
It had been unclear whether the man inside had been hit or if he was even alive. Heavily armed tactical officers had surrounded the shed, and police set off tear gas before they found the man dead.
Dr. Thomas M. Scalea, physician in chief of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, said Garner came in at 8:45 a.m. with severe gunshot wounds, with injuries to his right chest, lung, liver and diaphragm. He had fractured ribs, and a bullet exited his right side. As of noon, he was in the recovery room in "reasonably stable" condition and on a ventilator, Scalea said.
Scalea, discussing whether additional surgery is needed, said, "I don't know. It is way too early to tell."
A county police spokesman said the officer was wearing a ballistic vest.
The officer's wife was with him at Maryland Shock Trauma Center; he has young children who were in school this morning.
Baltimore County Police Col. William A. Kelly said the officer was "alert and awake" when he was brought in. "Officers are now rallying around him," Kelly said at the hospital near Baltimore's downtown.
He said Garner has been a member of the unit for 12 years. He said the officer's dog, a german shepherd, is fine.
Lt. Deanna Chemelle, of the Woodlawn precinct, was among about 30 officers at the hospital. She said she grew up with the officer, who she described as "a great family man who loves his job."
"Everyone is very upset. He's got a family, just like everyone else," Chemelle said.
The shootings occurred about 7:30 a.m. when undercover officers staking out the grocery store confronted two suspected robbers. The officers were there because of six recent armed robberies in the area and were alerted by a store employee who ran out into the parking lot to tell them there was a robbery in progress, police said.
Cpl. Mike Hill, a county police spokesman, said officers quickly arrested one suspect but that a second escaped. Officers, with the help of the K-9 unit, tracked the second man to a shed off Cottington Road.
Police cordoned off the neighborhood, and Perry Hall Elementary, Perry Hall Middle and Perry Hall High schools, along with Joppa View Elementary, were on lockdown. School officials asked parents not to try to pick their children up. "Parents have been cooperative and understanding," Baltimore County School system spokesman Charles Herndon said. This is something we practice. ... It's a normal instructional day other than the enhanced security." One school, Tabernacle Christian School, was closed, and parents of youngsters who were at the school for an early morning care program were called to pick up their children.
Because of heavy fog, the wounded officer could not be airlifted to Shock Trauma and instead was rushed there by ambulance escorted by police cars. Other officers shut down streets in the county and city to ensure the ambulance had a clear drive on streets normally crowded during the morning rush-hour.
Scalea, the Shock Trauma surgeon, said the mode of transportation did not matter in this instance.
"They did a fabulous job getting him here," he said. "You get him here as fast as you can. It's called the golden hour for a reason. If you can't fly, you drive faster."
The hospital, the region's premier trauma unit, now has three police officers being treated for gunshot wounds.
Maryland State Police Tfc. Eric D. Workman remains in critical condition this morning, slowly improving after being shot Tuesday while seeking to arrest a man on a warrant in Baltimore County.
Baltimore Police Officer Momodu Gondo remains at Shock Trauma recovering from three bullet wounds to the back that occurred when he was held up in front of his city home Dec. 5. Police arrested a suspect in that case Wednesday.
"Doctors are superstitious people. Bad things tend to come in threes," Scalea said. "It is not so good. It is obviously emotional, and very difficult for everyone on my staff. I'm getting tired of it."

(WJZ/AP) Perry Hall, Md. A man suspected of shooting and wounding a Baltimore County police officer minutes after a supermarket robbery in Perry Hall has been found dead inside a shed near the store.
The man was found on the floor of the shed about 11:30 this morning, moments after a police tactical team fired tear gas into the building and roughly four hours after gunfire from the shed wounded 16-year veteran officer David Garner.
Garner has served with the county's police dog section for 12 years and was involved in the search for the suspect in the minutes after the robbery at the Super Fresh store on Bel Air Road in Perry Hall. After he was shot, police directed return fire at the shed.
Corp. Mike Hill tells WJZ's Gigi Barnett "This is a very serious incident. This is an armed gun man who has shot a police officer and he certainly will shoot anybody he can to try to get away from the scene."
The physician in chief at Shock Trauma in Baltimore, Doctor Thomas Scalea (scuh-LEE'-uh) says Garner was admitted at 8:45 a-m with what he calls a through-and-through injury to his right arm and an entry wound in his right chest.
Scalea says a bullet pierced a lung, Garner's diaphragm and liver, fractured some ribs and exited Garner's pelvis.
Scalea says Garner underwent surgery to have his liver repaired and is in the recovery room in "reasonably stable" condition. He is on a ventilator. Police say he was wearing a bullet-proof vest when he was wounded.
Garner is 39-years-old and has a wife and two children.
A second suspect was arrested during a foot chase moments after the robbery. Police investigating a series of recent supermarket robberies had been conducting a stake-out outside the store when it was robbed shortly before 7:30 a.m.
"This is the third forcemeat involved shooting in the last few days in the Baltimore metropolitan area. We had a Baltimore City Officer shot, Maryland State Trooper shot, and now one of our own shot." added Col. William Kelly.
On Monday, Maryland State trooper Eric Workman was shot and critically injured in the Woodlawn area as he and other officers attempted to arrest a suspect in an earlier home invasion and kidnapping.
Last week, Baltimore City police officer Momodu Gondo was shot three times in the back outside as he arrived home in Northeast Baltimore at the end of his shift.
Workman and Gondo are still hospitalized at Shock Trauma. Scalea commented today on the hospital's handling of the three shootings. He said, "It's emotionally very difficult for me and my staff when the phone rings to put all that aside and do your job...otherwise people don't get the best medical care. The two-count indictment charges Collin Hawkins, 24, of Baltimore with being a felon in possession of firearms after the officer's Dec. 5 shooting. Hawkins is accused of possessing a loaded Bersa Thunder 9 mm pistol and a Winchester model 370 16-gauge shotgun.
The maximum sentence he could receive on the federal charges is 10 years in prison, according to the Maryland U.S. attorney's office. Hawkins faces state charges of first-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault and two handgun violations in the same case.
The shooting occurred just after midnight Dec. 5 when Momodu Gondo, 23, was getting out of his car at his home in the 5700 block of The Alameda.

Andrew D. Cawthorne, 32, has been charged with two counts of attempted armed robbery in connection with the Dec. 14 hold-up of a Super Fresh store in the 8900 block of Belair Road in Perry Hall.
That incident left one suspect in the robbery, Learnold Jones, dead after a shootout with police. Baltimore County Officer David Garner was shot and seriously injured.
Another suspect in the robbery, Vernon Edward Brown III, was arrested within minutes and is being held at the Baltimore County Detention Center.
After receiving a tip, city police today arrested Cawthorne at about 9:30 a.m. at a house in the 2400 block of North Calvert Street. Cawthorne was arrested without incident and also is being held in Baltimore County.

Baltimore County officers fatally shoot man in chase

Baltimore County police fatally shot a man last night after he led them on a chase through a residential neighborhood near Essex, crashed his car and shot at pursuing officers, said police spokesman Bill Toohey.
Police were called about a disturbance at the Silver Dome lounge on Middleborough Road twice last evening. The second time, about 8:30 p.m., they encountered a man brandishing a gun, Toohey said.
The man drove off in a car pursued by three police cars. He turned from Back River Neck Road onto a neighborhood street, lost control of his car and crashed into a parked vehicle. He emerged from his car shooting at police, who returned fire and shot him, Toohey said.
The man, whose name has not been released, was taken to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Though one of the man's shots pierced the windshield of a police car, no officers were injured, Toohey said.
An employee who answered the phone at the lounge said an argument broke out among a group of people who came to the bar after a wedding at Martin's Eastwind. They were asked to leave, and eventually someone at the bar called the police, the employee said.

A man convicted of shooting an off-duty Baltimore police officer during a robbery attempt two years ago was sentenced today to 50 years in prison, the city prosecutor's office said.
Reginald McKever, 21, shot Officer Kevin Simmons in the foot on July 18, 2005, in the 5300 block of Goodnow Road in Northeast Baltimore. Simmons had been sitting on a split-rail fence talking on his cell phone when McKever and another man approached, pointed a gun at him and said, "kick it out," prosecutors said.
Simmons, who was in civilian clothes but had his department-issued handgun with him, ran away and was shot once in the foot. McKever was arrested; the other man has not been identified.
McKever was convicted in November of attempted first-degree murder, use of a handgun in the commission of a crime of violence and attempted robbery with a deadly weapon.
Circuit Judge Allen L. Schwait sentenced McKever to 20 years for the weapon count and 30 years on the attempted murder charges, with the terms running consecutively.

A Baltimore County police officer was hospitalized this morning after a man walking near an elementary school in Essex tossed paint thinner in his face, police said.
About 10 a.m., a county police officer answered a call about a man walking near Mars Estates Elementary School with a rag to his face, said Bill Toohey, a county police spokesman.
After the officer approached the man in the 1400 block of Old Eastern Ave. and asked him to remove the rag, the man splashed a chemical on the officer's face and skin, Toohey said.
The chemical was believed to be toluene, a paint thinner, Toohey said.
Toohey said that although the officer could see, he was taken by ambulance to the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital after complaining of a stinging sensation on his skin and eyes, Toohey said. Police did not identify the officer.
The man who had been approached by the officer was taken to Franklin Square Hospital Center, where he was being treated for apparently inhaling the chemical's fumes, Toohey said.
Charges are pending against the man, Toohey said.
