CROSS OUTS

Unread post by Lonewolf » January 22nd, 2007, 2:08 pm

You know, I have this gift of mine which deals with lettering.

I have dozens upon dozens of alphabets that I've developed
over my years with the Homeboys in the neighborhoods.

Fair to say that I have a pretty good understanding and skills
on Gang lettering. I nourish this skill and you'll always find my
library books full of placasos and artwork. Some of it real nice
and some of it kinda shysty lookin' . . .

Whenever I write letters to anyone, be that family or friends
that are locked up >> I always throw out some style and insert
some art. That's just how it is with me, it comes natural.

I have this digital camera that I went and got myself, and I try
to keep it with me whenever I go to different places. With this
cam' i have been able to compile and amass a decent amount of
"strike ups / placasos" and every now and then I run across sum
very nice clean ones >> not no scribbles and not no tagger work.

Just recently, I noticed a firme big a*s placaso on this bulding wall
which faces the 5 freeway along Logan Heights. It reads RED STEPS
in huge brown/gold shaded block lettering. It was a clean lookin' one.
Every time I passed by it, I kept telling myself > gotta bring my cam.
And every time > it slipped my mind and failed to take a picture of it.
Then it happens >> some Vatos from SHELL TOWN 38 STREET went
and crossed it all out and really focked it up. My chance is gone and
another firme "old school" gang strike up gone by the way side. Why?

Because of the street wars.

I don't know man, maybe is just me, but I for one was never one to
smear up and cross out "anyone's" art >> if it was really a nice piece.

Any thoughts from any of you on the subject?

Theres people like you who show others respect and theres others that can care less and dont wanna hear it with so called enemies. What can we do, theres 2 sides to a coin. It's always gonna be like that.

You know I always found it very interesting that NO ONE (to my knowledge) has ever crossed out

that "Florenica 13" on the corner of Florence and Holmes.

Its a very old mural of the virgin Mary and then off it has "Florenica 13" in a vertical placaso.

That mural/placaso has been there for many moons.

Man, that is real nice. It is a shame that some bangers would come around and tag it up. :( Stuff like that is a piece of art, and deserves to be respected. I am not from L.A. but everytime I've been down there I have seen some real tight looking grafitti. We got to change how we treat art work. Writers are artists, you wouldnt go and cross out a Van Gough painting, so why touch another masterpiece?
Peace-

Man the red steps is just a basic block throwup. Its not really that tight if you ask me. I seen some cats in San Pedro put up some clean and tight. As far as gettin X'd thats part of the game. Back in the day it pissed me off but I now just accept it. But when you catch a fool X'n out yours?.....its priceless.

Them are 10 feet tall blocks ese, right up against a busy a*s freeway strip
white paint up first > then the blocks thrown up in a real true "ever olden"
old school Chicano stilo. It is true to the colors and true to the cause v v v
"IN MY BOOK" >> it is clean lookin'.

I don't know how SD is but in IE and SGV alot of people don't even bother with any good artwork like that anymore because the graffiti remover guy comes in the mornings and takes it off anyways. Still their certain areas people know where to go where it might stay up longer, but in regular streets they been taking off as much as they can.

Never was good with that tagger work . . .
tagger work is about --> the solo bomber
or the Krew --> not about the N'HOOD . . .

WALL ART gotta have deep significanse . . .
gotta have a "strong allegiance" . . .
gotta be sprayed up with mucho corazon . . .
gotta challenge and gotta warn fools . . .
gotta live through the ages --> no matter
what the style of the times is!
WALL ART can't be transitory nor temporary!

WALL ART gotta have "MUCHO CORAZON"
So much heart goes into Barrio Art, which
includes PLACASOS, that many have laid
down their lives "IN HONOR OF" !!!!!!!!!!!!!
