In June 2000, a CBS News report called the UK one of the most violent urban societies in the western world; and that Britain is more violent than the US. The report says the streets and shopping centres of Britain are a "battleground" of crime, where people were more likely to be burgled, twice as likely to be robbed and two-and-a-half times more likely to be assaulted than in America.

But the Home Office has hit back at the CBS statistics, claiming that the average American is seven times more likely to be murdered than their British counterpart and 60 times more likely to be shot.

Home Office figures showed the murder rate in the US in 1998 was 6.3 per 100,000 people compared with 1.4 per 100,000 in England and Wales.




Scotland tops list of world's most violent countries

A UNITED Nations report has labelled Scotland the most violent country in the developed world, with people three times more likely to be assaulted than in America.
England and Wales recorded the second highest number of violent assaults while Northern Ireland recorded the fewest.



The study, based on telephone interviews with victims of crime in 21 countries, found that more than 2,000 Scots were attacked every week, almost ten times the official police figures. They include non-sexual crimes of violence and serious assaults.

Violent crime has doubled in Scotland over the past 20 years and levels, per head of population, are now comparable with cities such as Rio de Janeiro, Johannesburg and Tbilisi.

The attacks have been fuelled by a “booze and blades” culture in the west of Scotland which has claimed more than 160 lives over the past five years. Since January there have been 13 murders, 145 attempted murders and 1,100 serious assaults involving knives in the west of Scotland. The problem is made worse by sectarian violence, with hospitals reporting higher admissions following Old Firm matches.

David Ritchie, an accident and emergency consultant at Glasgow’s Victoria Infirmary, said that the figures were a national disgrace. “I am embarrassed as a Scot that we are seeing this level of violence. Politicians must do something about this problem. This is a serious public health issue. Violence is a cancer in this part of the world,” he said.

Detective Chief Superintendent John Carnochan, head of the Strathclyde Police’s violence reduction unit, said the problem was chronic and restricting access to drink and limiting the sale of knives would at least reduce the problem.

The study, by the UN’s crime research institute, found that 3 per cent of Scots had been victims of assault compared with 1.2 per cent in America and just 0.1 per cent in Japan, 0.2 per cent in Italy and 0.8 per cent in Austria. In England and Wales the figure was 2.8 per cent

In the developing world lots of crimes go unreported, because of various reasons. So now, the original HMD/Mashtown has splintered - now we have too many to mention in each postcode. i.e. London Fields Man Dem (from original Mashtown) E8 or Penbury manz/P-Block E5 and so on. Similarly Tottenham splintered into gangs such as Northstar (came out of TMD).

All these newer area gangs came from the alliances of the 80's and 90's and now beef between themselves. They also keep the Hackney v Tottenham beef burning.

Teenager shot dead at ice rink

Hundreds of skaters fled in horror after a teenage boy was shot dead at an ice rink last night.

Police said up to 300 people were at the rink in Streatham, south east London, when the gunman opened fire shortly before 11pm.

The 16-year-old black victim was taken to a south London hospital where he was pronounced dead, a Scotland Yard spokeswoman said.

advertisementDetectives were today questioning six male youths and one 18-year-old man at a south London police station while forensic experts examined the murder scene, Streatham Ice Arena, in Streatham High Road.

The indoor venue is popular with young people and hosts a disco on Saturday evenings.

Officers from Operation Trident, which investigates gun crime in London's black community, are responsible for the inquiry.

Armed men burst into a boy's bedroom in the fourth south London murder in as many days

A 15-year-old boy has been shot dead in his bedroom after two men forced their way into his home early this morning. His sister called an ambulance but he died in less than an hour.
The murder is the latest in a spate of attacks in the Peckham area of south-east London. On Saturday, a 21-year-old man was stabbed to death in Southampton Way and on Sunday a man in his 40s was shot dead and another injured at a flat less than a mile away.

James Andre Smarrt-Ford, 16, was also killed in south London after he was shot at least twice at an ice rink in Streatham on Saturday night. Today, Scotland Yard's Operation Trident team, which investigates gun crime in the black community, launched a murder inquiry into the latest shooting of the pupil of St Michael's Secondary School in Bermondsey.

Detective Superintendent Gary Richardson, who is leading the investigation, said forensic teams were still searching the house. "We are still gathering evidence," he said. "The boy was shot while he was in bed. "His sister, who had also gone to bed, administered first aid and the boy was taken to King's College Hospital, but he died at around 2am."

Police said the boy's identity would be released when the family had been informed adding that no post-mortem had been conducted. Neighbours said the teenager was a regular at the nearby Celestial Church of Christ in Bird-in-Bush Road. He is believed to have had two sisters and a brother.

Det Supt Richardson said: "The boy was not known to police before this incident and we are not linking this to gangs or any other incidents which have occurred in the past few days."
