Afghanistan retook its place as the world's no.1 producer of heroin in the year following the U.S. invasion of the country to topple the Taliban regime under which the cultivation of opium poppies was banned.

Taliban, or Students of Islamic Knowledge Movement, which came to power in the mid-1990s, and ruled the country until it was ousted by the U.S. invasion in 2001 in response to the September 11 attacks, stamped down hard on the country's long-established heroin trade.

Taliban took power when Afghanistan was suffering a bloody civil war. And although they managed to hold only 90% of the Afghan territories, their policies controlled the entire of the country.

Mullah Omar of the Taliban imposed in July 2000 a ban on poppy cultivation in all Taliban controlled regions of Afghanistan. The Taliban government was indeed instrumental in implementing a successful drug eradication drive, with the support and collaboration of the UN.

But the poor Afghan population, now suffering tremendously under the U.S. occupation, is returning to poppy cultivation.

A recent editorial on TheState.com, stated that more heroin from Afghanistan, which takes the lead as the world's top producer of heroin, is hitting America’s streets, six years after the U.S. toppled the regime it called “terrorist”.

90 percent of the world’s opium is made from poppies cultivated in Afghanistan, most of which is shipped throughout Europe, and this explains why the Afghan drug trade had always been portrayed as a European problem, rather than an American one.

Internal drug-enforcement reports suggest that the U.S. authorities are seizing more Afghan heroin at U.S. ports, contradicting officials’ public statements.

But Joseph Keefe, an assistant deputy director with the Office of National Drug Control Policy claims that “the amount of heroin coming to the United States from Afghanistan has pretty much stayed the same”.

Behind the scenes, U.S. officials reported to their Afghan counterparts a noticeable increase.

“It’s logical that where there is demand, there is a supply,” said M. Ashraf Haidari, the first secretary of the Afghan Embassy in Washington. “Drugs from Afghanistan are making their way to the United States.”

The officials’ assertion of an increase in the U.S. supply of Afghan heroin, could be seen as an evidence that Afghanistan, which the U.S. came to liberate six years ago, is plagued by corruption more than before the American “liberating” occupation.

New revelations also support United Nations statements asserting that drug corruption in Afghanistan has become widespread and entrenched.

The United Nations found that opium poppy cultivation in Afghanistan has soared and predicted its increase by 59% in 2006. Opium trade increased by 49% in relation to 2005.

“The problem of narcotics in Afghanistan is a problem of national security for the United States,” said Haidari, of the Afghan Embassy, who noted that “drugs finance terrorism.”

A DEA internal analysis found that 14 percent of the heroin seized in the United States in 2004 originated in Afghanistan, compared with 8 percent in 2003.

DEA officials haven’t released 2005 figures yet.

The Western media and the Bush administration, which has long claimed it’s committed to a huge drive to rid Afghanistan of opium, have been blaming the Taliban and the warlords for opium trade.

But ironically enough, the U.S. military presence served to restore rather than eradicate the drug trade
