Urgent talks as third boy shot dead

Some of the most senior police officers in the country are set to hold talks after the third fatal shooting of a teenager in south London in less than a fortnight.

The latest murder happened during daylight hours on Wednesday afternoon, when a 15-year-old boy - named locally as Billy Cox - was gunned down in his own home in the Clapham North area.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair is meeting officers from the Met's Specialist Crime Directorate - which includes Operation Trident, tasked with investigating gun crime in London's black community.

A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman confirmed the investigation would be handed over to Operation Trident on Thursday, adding: "Not because the victim is black, but because it is a shooting." A post-mortem examination will be carried out on the boy.

It followed the murder of churchgoing schoolboy Michael Dosunmu, also 15, who was shot in his bedroom at his family's home in Peckham last Tuesday. Just a few days before, 16-year-old James Andre Smartt-Ford was shot and killed at an ice rink in nearby Streatham.

The latest shooting will fuel the perception that gun culture among south London's teenagers is spiralling out of control. The latest victim is thought to have been deliberately targeted.

Officers were called to the 15-year-old's house in Fenwick Place, Clapham North, at just after 3.40pm where they found him with a gunshot wound. He had been discovered by a family member.

The shooting is not believed to have been a case of mistaken identity like that of Michael Dosunmu in Peckham.

There are understood to be no signs of forced entry at the 15-year-old's home and it is likely that he knew his attackers.

Detectives are investigating whether the shooting was the result of a row that got out of hand or some kind of feud or local dispute. The boy, who has not been named by police, is believed to be of mixed race, with a white father and a Thai mother.

Look MafiaG, theres no point in peeps tit for tat chatting breeze about certain realities. The thing is, and this is fact not fiction, this is real not hype, that UNFORTUNATELY, gangs culture is growing massive momentum in UK, like its a virus infecting inner city communities all over the country, from Liverpool to Manchester to Nottingham to London. I am a man who wishes that this were not the case, but SADLY it is all too real rudeboy, too real. Not to beef but to be clear - here in Hackney, East london, there are NO skinheads - Skinheads are a ting from the 70's and 80's really - they first came out of Ska music from Jamaica. Young Jamaican kids were moving to Ska (early form of reggae) and white kids emulated them. At first it was a black and white youth thing in UK. White kids mixed with black kids in the lil subculture and it was a positive thing. The style was short hair, pork pie hats, sharp suits...skinheads followed that fashion but became racist (though some still danced to ska!!) when it got hijacked by right wing political groups like the National Front back in the day. But since 90's skinheads are as old fashioned as punks seen. If, hypothetically, a batch of skins wanted to make a presence in an area like here, they'd be run out before they could say 'sk..'. Its that simple. They dont really exist anymore.

But, what does exist is the emergence of British streetgangs, which are homegrown and maybe strange to your ears. These newer gangs have arisen mainly over the 'noughties' - the background was that back in the 80's and 90's, Jamaican Yardie drug gangs/posses held sway on Londons streets as top dogs and British youts emulated their ruthless style. Eventually, British youts became the same style and took them on and they lost the roads. That and bosses back a yard in Jamrock ordered shooting to stop in UK because it was bad for business. The vacuum left things open for the British youts. Simultaeneously to this, groups such as Hackney Man Dem (Now called London Fields MAn Dem) used to rep the whole borough and was thought of a s just 'Hackney'. Over some beef about a girl, a war broke out with a neighbouring London borough called Tottenham, who main crew was from an estate called Broadwater Farm (FArm boys then) who became Tottenham Man Dem and beefed with Hackney. Many people fell on that tit for tat and its still active.

Then in the nouties, 'Hackney' also known as 'Mashtown' splintered into too many neighbourhood batches and cliques representing their estate/area and postcode. This has become more articulated over the last 7 years until now we have too many.

In south London there has been four children/teens shot dead in a small area (few square miles) in the last two weeks - the last lad to be killed was a 15yr old - think he was a 'Claptown Boy' and was killed by a boy from PDC (Poverty Driven Children, Peel Dem Crew, Pray Days Change etc). I'm from an estate in Glasgow which was labelled as one of the poorest in not only Europe but poorer than some of the worst areas of the USA. I do outreach work with members of gangs in my estate, we call them young teams, and almost every person I know between the ages of 15 - 24 are in one.

I'd just like to make a couple of points, then I'll be off and probably won't be back apart from answering a few replies.

Firstly, and least importantly some of the American guys on here have been going on about "whiteboys" etc etc. In the slums in Glasgow you'll find the poorest of Europes poor, Junkies, smackheads, jakes, every cunt seems to have that 1000 yard stare. Very few of these people are black or asian they're all white. So straight away some of you are running the risk of stereotyping people's situation by colour of skin.

Secondly, and most importantly a lot of pepole on here seem to think streetgangs are something to be proud of. They really aren't. Every night at the centre I hear about another one of the young guys from my neighbourhood that has either been stabbed, or seriously assaulted. Every week I hear about somebody that has died, sometimes from being shot, but mostly from a knife attack or a heroin overdose. Knives are deep rooted in Scottish culture since the days of the clans, and I really wish they weren't.

The most important thing is that last year my wee cousin and my friend were murdered in gang violence. My friend was stabbed 5 times in the chest after his wee brother got involved in drug dealing for a rival gang from a rival estate (here all the estates fight each other, and we have about 60 - 70% council housing in Glasgow) My wee cousin died an even worse death, he was repeatedly stabbed about the face, and had his throat and head slashed with a broken bottle, then kicked in the head whilst he lay bleeding and dying outside his local chinese takeaway.

His crime? nothing. He was going out to get his dinner when a rival "young team" from another estate was passing through looking for trouble.

Believe me. Street gangs are the fucking worst thing about living where I live. They've been around since the 30s in Glasgow, they don't emulate America, they know nothing about hip hop or LA or try to be black or anything like that. But I seriously seriously wish they didn't exist at all.

I appreciate the post for Glasgow, thank you. I've heard a lot about Glasgows gangs/young teams and appreciate the context as well - I think it'd be very hard for American breahs to understand that there are such run-down, socially excluded, grimey, mashed up areas such as have always existed in Glasgow. And that in places like Glasgow, the young people being hurt in their gang thing generation after generation are white kids, tough as hell young Glaswegians, who have been saturated with hardman culture since time boi - I don't think there is an equivalent stateside - social exclusion here in UK has less to do with ethnicity. The same goes with Liverpool, Manchester, Nottingham and London, though in the British towns and cities, the gang culture is more a non white phenomena, white kids in those same areas are just as hyped as black kids, the way it is here
