I'm not even from South Central or Cali for that matter but I was really moved by this documentary, I can only imagine what it means to a brother from LA who really understands the dynamics of LA gangs and actually lives that shit.

After seeing that doc and seeing the history of LA, the long history of racism and blatant descrimination and hatred, I began to fell softer hearted toward gang members and felt deeply moved like every one of those lil peeps coming up have been set up over time into this thing. Bring back the Panthers to fit 2007!!!

And watching the doc has made me pay attention to Londons history of racism in relation to the 'Windrush Generation' who came from Jamaica in the 50's to work in UK, through to the riots which spread all over the nation in 81 and 85, right through to the emergence of a new brand British streetgangs since the nouties (yes, its all new here folks), influenced by America of course (gang hype/colours etc), Jamaican/Kingston ghetto life, home grown old school cockney flavors and US hiphop/Jamaican Dancehall and continued institutional/social racism, social exclusion and a ready drugs market......Peace

Good stuff! You are right, i heard about this very often in differents contexts.
In the military in different times they used to dehumanize the opponents through propaganda and indoctrination so it would be easier for the soldier to be merciless with his opponents.

Exactly, and it would be much easier this time around, being that there really isn't any kind of White movement toward justice for the lower class, today. The Black Panthers only made it as far as they did because the government was focusing on the hippy whites, who were promoting communism, while the neo-cons were staging a war in Vietnam supposedly fighting that very form of government.

The New Black Panther Party are trying to organize. They're trying to accomplish everything the old Panthers were trying to accomplish, and they're getting nowhere because they don't have the allies with the numbers and the political clout that they need. They only have a small portion of the Black community and, in kind, that's as far as their power reaches.

Yeah old BPP had a lot of allies, Young Lords, the gangstas, puerto ricans, AIM (American Indiand), alot of Asian Americans supported it at the time, Brown Berets (mexicans), alot of people. Basically everybody was trying to make it right for their people and everyone, now Asians have sort of got somewhere, black and Mexican is beffin and as ignorant as they can be, the gangs don't have no focus, whites either became yuppies or went back to hatin blacks, THe indians gettin drowned in booze, I mean it's all fucked up.

they were the most racist because of the leather coats they had, with a black man being hung. They were in South Gate and Huntington Park and they would cross Alameda, which is South LA all the time. Do your research for the late 1940s. Noone said they were powerful, they were just present and they didn't like black people.

Just curious, how do you know this? We're talking about 50 years ago. Back then, Blacks and Latinos didn't even have the legal rights that Whites had in all parts of the country, and the LAPD was made up of mostly racist southerners. That gives gangs like the spookhunters (and they weren't the only white racist gang) a lot more ground to victimize and the Blacks a lot less ground to defend themselves. Considering how much documentation those guys like Mike Davis had to back up their claims, it is very likely that the original Black gangs organized to protect themselves from racism that there was no system in place to protect from.

I'm a life long L.A. resident, so you don't have to tell me about L.A. history. I know there was racism against blacks, Mexicans and others.

I did a lot of research a while back on the early L.A. gang history - circa 1940's to mid 1960's -I didn't find any evidence of any big white racist gang population. Most of the white gangs I ran across were just the white version of the basic low rider/greaser/proto-cholo type gang of that era. Gangs like the Undertakers, Black Cross, Dragons, Athenians, Khans etc. Many gangs were mixed between whites and Mexicans or Mexicans and blacks. If there were other racist gangs like the Spook Hunters then name them. We know all the black gangs of that period, all the the Mexican gangs, all the car clubs, even the Japanese-American gangs from that period are known by name. If there had really been all those racist white boy gangs we'd have some names.
