I'm from Lyon, well, a project city [url=http://www.ville-rillieux-la-pape.fr/]Rillieux-La-Pape[/url] in the vicinity of Lyon to be exact. Don't let the pictures fool you, they don't show the hot spot, which is the neighborhood of La Velette, where I used to live. When I was growing up, I was constantly surrounded by hostile people, and drug dealing. A lot of tension because this is a low income area, and kids oftentimes don't get any good directions or good schooling. (Rillieux is a ZEP, a zone of prioritary education, where priority is put on schools because it's THAT bad) I don't recall gang activity per se, but there was a lot of tension and drug related feuds. The big thing over there was car burning and now with the National Front rising, it's just getting worse. I remember when kids raided the Part-Dieu mall in Lyon and every year it would be car fire after car fire. The one "gang" that I knew of were called Les Rats de la Velette and were known for stealing clothing from the back of the truck, as well as electronics and car stereos. My dad was awoken by the cops one night, his car totalled in a ravine, stolen by the Rats. I went to school with a couple of them, I grew up with these kids. I can tell you of those that went to jail and the ones that tried to redeem themselves. I don't know if there are still around, it's been almost 10 years now, but they might as well be for all I know.

I can't really tell what French city is more dangerous. In my book, Paris' projects were, especially Sarcelles, and I remember the emeutes (riots) in Paris, the ones you see in La Haine. But what i know is that since the National Front's been getting in city halls throughout, it's been tougher, especially with the Muslim Extremists.
