Iraq war adds to US budget trouble


The US will be in the red by almost half a trillion dollars next year thanks largely to the spiralling cost of involvement in Iraq, a non-partisan government report says.
In its twice-yearly Budget Outlook, the Congressional Budget Office says the US will run up a deficit of $480bn in 2004, following a $401bn deficit this year.

The figures - a new record in dollar terms - are markedly worse than the CBO predicted in March this year, when the 2003 number was seen at $246bn.

They suggest a near-$1.4 trillion deficit in the 10 years to 2013 where they had previously foreseen a surplus of $891bn.

The CBO figures assume that the White House's massive programme of tax cuts will be temporary, as promised.

If they are made permanent, something many Republicans have sworn to achieve, the deficit could swell to almost $3 trillion over the 10-year period.

'Jobless recovery'

The White House insists that its massive tax cuts will underpin a recovery, and that as individuals and businesses fare better tax revenues - and the government's fiscal position - will improve.

It has itself predicted a $455bn deficit for this year - the lower CBO figure is based on predictions of slower-than-expected spending of money earmarked for Iraq - and $475bn in 2004.

But Democrat opponents of President George W Bush were quick to pin much of the blame for the deep hole in the budget that the CBO is predicting on the tax cuts themselves - as well as on the war in Iraq.

And they are likely to focus on another potential stumbling block for the Bush administration: the CBO's prediction that unemployment is likely to stay high right through to the next Presidential election in November 2004.

damn..really? i didnt know that..when i took the test i answered every question even if i didnt know it..i just guessed.i didnt get a high enough score to get in..that was like a year ago...i was going to try getting into the Navy..but i still need my high school diploma anyways...but i think if i took it now i can pass because since than ive learned so much and taken over alot of the high school classes that i failed in high school because i pretty much screwed up all through high school...now im not sure if i should try to join still .

I beleive that after 6 months you can re-take the asvab test again., For H.S. check with your H.S. and see what classes you needed, then go to an adult school and ask for the tests for those classes, some you will be able to test on without doing any school but you have to pay for each class test (not much), but if you pass a class test; they give you credits towards your diploma. Or you can sign up for the G.E.D. test. The military by law accepts it just like a h.s. diploma and together with a good score on the asvab; you can guarantee yourself a decent job in the armed service of your choice - I would choose Air Force over Navy anytime because of the wide range of fields of communications, electronics, computer diagnostics and mechanical maintenance, up to air crew support positions.

While Reservist are being held up after their Service Contract as well as other that have been dormant have been re-called for Active Duty "because of their pro-skills" needed in todays hight-tech military, the vast majority of new recruits that go thru Boot Camp end up being sent into Combat Zones and used as Grunts aka: CANNON FODDER.

Michael Jordan's Older Brother Going To Iraq


FAYETTEVILLE, North Carolina (AP) - Army Command Sgt. Maj. James R. Jordan has much in common with his younger brother, retired basketball star Michael Jordan. He loves his job, believes in helping his team and expects maximum effort from those around him.

And like his brother, James Jordan likes to leave on his own terms. He has asked to stay in the Army for a year beyond his mandatory retirement date so he can complete a full yearlong deployment to Iraq (news - web sites) with about 500 other members of the 35th Signal Brigade.

Under normal conditions, the 47-year-old Jordan would wind down his Army career in the spring as he approached the 30-year mark, but he has no intention of getting on an airplane April 29 and coming home.

"That's not the way you want to end a 30-year career," Jordan told The Fayetteville Observer.

"People ask 'Why?'" said Col. Bryan Ellis, the brigade commander. "The answer is, he is completely selfless. We all want to see it go well."

Jordan is a no-nonsense noncommissioned officer with a shaved head and a wry sense of humor. He stands 5-foot-7, while his younger brother is about 6-foot-6. As the senior enlisted soldier in the brigade of 2,450 soldiers, he has kept a low profile at Fort Bragg and avoided calling attention to his family connection.

"If you don't believe in selfless service, you are not going to make it in this business," said Jordan, the oldest person in the brigade.

He was 36, wearing the stripes of a first sergeant, when he went to airborne school, where most soldiers are in their teens or early 20s. He still runs eight miles and expects soldiers to be alongside him.

Three years of Junior ROTC during high school in Wilmington helped convince Jordan that the Army was for him.

"I figured I wanted to be a soldier, plus I was the oldest of five kids," he said. "I wanted to get out of the house and do something myself."

He said some of his relatives don't really know what he does.

"They know I'm in the Army. That's about it," he said. "My immediate family and my wife, my kids, not extremely happy, but they are on the team. They say: 'Daddy, do what you've got to do.'"

"I've been doing this by myself for so long, being my own person, being my own soldier," he said. "I'm going to continue doing it the same way until the day I feel like I need to hang it up, not when they feel like I need to hang it up."

Aside from the suppot services to the main Combat Forces, "ALL" in the Military are trained for "KILLING", and WAR ain't pretty.
Now, we can discuss the attrocities and causes that led up to the events taking place all year long, but the fact remains that once your adrenaline gets going, you get with the program and get into it full-heartedly or chances are you won't come back in one piece to your loved ones.
Now, the sensitivity that we teach our Men about the reasons for the war is one that we "must" address fully so that they don't go into battle as if it was a video game and the enemy was non-human.
