Shooting at city vigil blamed on teen gangs

By Robert Moran

Inquirer Staff Writer
A war between teenage gangs injected terror and chaos into a West Philadelphia antiviolence vigil when an 18-year-old woman was shot in the back, police said.

Gunfire erupted about 8 p.m. Tuesday as about 150 people attended the vigil in the 6000 block of Market Street for Terrence Walker, 19, who had been shot in the head as he left a bar early Sunday, said Lt. John F. Walker of Southwest Detectives.

A gold Mercury Grand Marquis stopped in the middle of the intersection of 61st and Market, and a group of teenagers from 60th Street emerged, said Walker, who is not related to the homicide victim.

Some girls from 56th Street in the crowd hurried into a gold Oldsmobile 88 and tried to drive away when a male associated with 60th Street fired three to five times, striking Bianca Junious, Walker said. The Oldsmobile then crashed into a police cruiser.

Police took Junious to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. She was treated there and released.

Walker said police knew the identity of the shooter and expected to obtain an arrest warrant soon.

"The respect for society has diminished so much that [a gang] shows up at a vigil where there are infants, children, and adult family members of a murder victim and just fires recklessly at people," Walker said.

Teenagers from 56th and 60th Streets have been feuding for years, partly because of a fight among girls when they were in sixth grade, Walker said.

The feud has spilled into Sayre High School at 59th and Spruce Streets, where most of the teens are or were enrolled.

In January, a 17-year-old student was shot twice on the school's property. The male victim, who survived, reportedly also had a gun.

Other gunfire around the school has been connected to the battle between the 56th and 60th Streets crews, Walker said. Street-by-street warfare is common in the city's poorer neighborhoods, and is responsible for much of the rising gun violence that has plagued Philadelphia.

Yesterday, a memorial of stuffed animals, candles and handwritten messages surrounded an El pillar near a closed section where SEPTA is renovating the Market-Frankford Line.

Some messages suggested Terrence Walker, who graduated from West Philadelphia High School and had a son, was friendly with 60th Street. "6-0 will always miss U," someone wrote.

A flyer advertising Tuesday's vigil remained posted to the pillar. It urged people to attend to remember Terrence Walker and "help send a message to the community to stop the senseless violence in Philadelphia."

Some who visited the memorial yesterday said they were at the vigil when the shots rang out and everybody scattered in a panic.

"People ran off without their shoes," said Robert Porter, 46, who was at the memorial to return two sets of keys people dropped as they rushed for cover.

Ashley Harbin, 19, who attended the vigil with her two young children, said she had hidden behind a massive trash bin after hearing the shots.

Noting Terrence Walker's age - and maybe thinking of her own - Harbin said: "They're not even making it to 20 here."

Inside Jess & Ron's Place, the bar Terrence Walker allegedly exited when he was killed, Albert Smith, 68, a retired machinist, nursed a bottle of Ballantine Ale and said the city needed to be placed under martial law.

"Tell Rendell to bring in the National Guard," Smith said.

Pat Jackson, 53, the daytime bartender, said she didn't know whether Walker had been inside the bar the night he died, but he would not have been served alcohol, she insisted.

The neighborhood is filled with shuttered storefronts and burned-out buildings, and Jackson dismissed trying to plead with public officials for help.

"They don't care," she said.

creativemind you from philly you know what im talkin bout.
You know that there aren't really gangs but there are a lot of 5-10 man squads that rep a strip.
The thing is now these squads are beefin with each other over years and those rivalries are turning into a gang-like war.
so to some 56v60 7v5 20v27 or those other numerous beefs look like little fights but to those involved it's real "my squad at war with your squad" type shit.

Yeah, it's always been wild along that strip under the El. 46th, 52nd, 56th, and 60th... you need to keep your eyes open all along there. I live in LA, but I still own my house in Wynnefield, and up there its always been 58th street at it with 54th street, or just plain old Wynnefield fighting dudes from Hilltop cause we had to go over there to go to 'Brook.

But shit is just crazy across the board. I few years ago, my next door neighbor was (a young girl about 19) was messing with some dude from SW. He car got stolen and some of the kids on the block was clowning her, including the boy next door to her (on the other side). They had lived next door to each other ALL their life.

Anyway, she got mad about being teased and called her boyfriend. He came up and from what I heard, pistol-whipped 2 dudes ON THEIR OWN BLOCK!!! Anyway, they tried to get back at him when he came up there. After some threats back and forth (mind you, the girl and one of the dudes that got whipped is living NEXT DOOR to each other all this time) the young boy got ran up on and murdered at the end of our block. Word was that the dude from SW bought 2 14 year old kids up to Wynnefield to do the work.

The CRAZY thing was, I was at the funeral and looking in the obituary, there was a picture of the kid who got killed AND the the girl who got him murdered, TOGETHER at a BBQ when they was both 3 years old!!!

Shit got even more crazy when she got her car back and they dudes on the Block fire bombed that shit in the driveway. My bedroom was in the back and it was about 3am. I heard "BLOOOOOMMMMM" and the walls shook. Her car was parked right next to my truck!!! I was like WTF!!!

Anyway, I was home about 2 weeks ago, and the shit is crazy as ever.

Yeah, I know Malik Aziz. He a good brother. Its a lot of good brother that was from that era (70's), that got their life together. Most of them was away during the time when the JBM was tearing shit up. By the time they fell off, these dudes from fresh out and trying to make a new life for their families. Its a different culture now though.

Philadelphia police kill boy, 15, wielding clothes iron

10/10/2007, 12:35 a.m. EDT
By MARYCLAIRE DALE
The Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The police commissioner has "a lot of questions" about why officers fatally shot a 15-year-old boy who allegedly wielded a clothes iron during a family disturbance.

When police arrived Monday afternoon, the teen, Ronald Timbers, was holding a knife and a hammer as he struggled with his mother, Commissioner Sylvester Johnson said at a news conference Tuesday.

The boy dropped them and later picked up the iron and held it up over his head, a stance that Johnson said could prove deadly had he hurled the iron at his mother or police.

"I have a lot of questions about this myself," Johnson said. "You don't want to see a 15-year-old boy killed. You don't want to see a 55-year-old man killed."

Johnson said all officers carry pepper spray but only supervisors typically carry stun guns.

The police department has been criticized for its use of deadly force under Johnson. Timbers was the 14th person killed by police this year. Last year, police fatally shot 20 people.

Johnson defended his department's record, saying police resolved many more situations that could have proved deadly and have been shot at without returning fire.

"If you feel your life is in danger, then you have a right to fire," Johnson said.

Timbers was a ninth-grader at the CEP Miller Alternative School, a school for students with discipline problems, school officials said.

Timbers' mother called police for help Monday afternoon after scuffling with her son, police said. No one else was at home, according to Johnson, who said police had previously been called there.

Timbers was at the top of a staircase with the iron while officers and the mother were at the bottom, police said. He was shot once in the shoulder, Johnson said.

The department's internal affairs unit is investigating the death and will forward a report to the district attorney. Johnson said he expected litigation to follow.

He declined to identify the officer who shot Timbers, but said the two officers on the scene had nearly 50 years of combined experience on the force.

"These two officers did not go to work that day with the idea that they're going to wind up shooting a 15-year-old child," Johnson said.
