LADY SETS SELF ON FIRE - PROTEST AGAINST RACISM

The horrifying sight which traumatized shoppers and office workers in the centre of Luxembourg City last week has now been labeled as a protest against racism. The Belgian woman of Congolese origin who set herself alight in the middle of Place d'Armes told witnesses that she was! doing it to protest against racism, moments before she carried out the desperate act which has left her in hospital fighting for her life.
Maggy Delvaux-Mufu, a mother of three in her forties, alerted several national newspapers late on Tuesday morning last week that she would be burning herself alive on place des Martyrs at 12.45 am, before setting out accompanied by her husband to walk through the centre of town to her macabre rendezvous. The police were alerted and officers were deployed to the Rousegärtchen.
But the woman changed her plan when she came across a group of journalists gathered to cover an event organized by the 'Movement écologique' on Place d'Armes, opposite the Cercle municipal. She soaked herself in petrol before confronting the members of the press, announcing that she was about to sacrifice her life to protest against racism. Moments later, she struck a match, turning herself into a human torch in front of hundreds of people.
Delvaux-Mufu' s husband and passers-by jumped on the burning body, attempting to stifle the flames with coats and jackets. The sce! ne made several people feel unwell and many witnesses who filled the square at lunchtime were traumatized by the woman's shrieking screams of unimaginable pain. The flames were already extinguished when police, rescue services and the fire brigade arrived at the scene. One person is reported to have vomited after seeing the woman being transported into an ambulance. The events in Place d'Armes have also started a controversy regarding the authorities' lack of psychological support for witnesses.
Delvaux-Mufu was taken to the Bon Secours hospital in Metz , where she is being treated in a specialized ward for burns and is fighting for her life. Grand Duchess Maria Teresa visited the woman and her family at the hospital last week.
RTL television was the first to run a news flash about the incident on its website on Tuesday afternoon last week. 352 reported the bulletin in its news in brief section, shortly before going to print. Events preceding the incident only came to light later on in the week.
The 42-year-old Belgian citizen and her husband had been facing financial difficulties. They had recently indebted themselves by buying a Citroën garage in Oberwampach, before realizing they were missing the documents that would allow them to set up a business. Delvaux-Mufu wrote a letter to Le Jeudi recounting her story of bureaucratic difficulties and economic despair. "I'm against all forms of violence, but day after day, my family and I have to endure moral violence, discrimination, insults and much more from Mr Juncker's administration" , she said in the letter published last week.
Money problems had driven the woman to desperately plead her case at the Prime minister's office early on the same day of the incident. Her threat to burn herself alive on Place des Martyrs after being turned away by the authorities caused government officials to contact the police. A city-wide search was organized, but nobody could foresee the woman would change her plans."

I thought belgium was pretty integrated and openminded....

I would have to question her personal motives... I think she is protesting mental health.

Setting yourself on fire has to be one of the dumbest ways to protest. Aside from Monks, just about everyone I've seen set themselves of fire have this instant look of regret. You can just see them thinking "Maybe I should have just made a poster or hung a banner, this doesn't feel so good." Or maybe set someone else on fire, like the person who was racists against you. That might prove a point, and can be your groups slogan. "Act racist and we'll set you on fire."

Like i said, i would say as an african you are confronted with a solid amount of BS ignorance and racism here sometimes. But not everywhere and all the time.
I cant really speak for Belgium, since i visited it only for a few days, but i have no doubts that its the same there. They have some hardcore racists there too.
But the article sounds to me as if she was desperate about her private life too.

So you have a group of white people who are looking at you strange and treating you differently because they are pre-judging you and stereotyping you. So you in turn give into the stereotype by stealing everything you can from a hotel....you see how you've just fueled their fire and given them another excuse? I'm not saying they were right, but how you dealt with it wasn't exactly the best thing either.

you didint do it because you are black.... you did it because you felt singled out and uncomfortable, and was trying to even a score that only exists in your head.

Whatever you may think those people were thinking, you proved yourself contemptable by living up to someone else's lowest common denomination.

two wrongs dont make a right.

I don't even consider that stealing. It's just normal practise when leaving a hotel. Even when I was a little kid, my mother always toke everything from the hotel room that she could and packed those to our bags. I think most of the people do that.

But about that firing thing... That woman obviously had some serious mental health problems. Don't need to be a doctor to tell you that. Otherwise she wouldn't set herself on fire. But then about Belgium.. I've kinda understood that Belgium is pretty racist country. After all, it's an old colonialist country. But how bad is it there, don't know. I've only visited there for a very shot time.

Not to say that isn't wrong from the others, but do people really care about others looking at them? I mean whenever I go to the grocery store, a security guy follows me around watching me that I don't steal anything. And in elevators older women tend to clench their purses tighter, or in subway, busses, trains people usually don't come to sit next to me. And especially when I was younger police wanted to check me all the time. I never really cared about that at all.

Then again one of my friend constantly keep complaining about similar experiences and really lets it eat him up. I think it's better to take it easy and understand why certain people act in certain ways.

She has three kids - I don't know if their grown or not, but before you directly harm yourself for a cause, you have to think "Will the benefit of doing this outweigh the negative impact?" I have no personal attachments anymore, but she has three kids.

lol yup their are better ways to get a message accross - for a while people will hear and talk about this because it was dramatic, but think about let's say a year from now, what would it have accomplished?

That happens to anyone who they feel is suspicious... it's funny you said that because at one of the Greenland markets (Korean grocery store) they got a African security guard, and the first time he was on duty he searched me when I walked out (I don't know - someone tell me if normal, civilian security guards are allowed to even do that?) but he was like "Sorry, but you just look hungry" lol

No, they're not allowed to search you. If he thought you stole something the best they can do is hold you and ask for police assistance. I would have told the guy to go fuck himself.
