Don't know which city would be classified as the toughest in Africa. A lot of the violence is not gang-related - it's political shit that you can't classify as street violence.

However South African cities are full of some hard fuckers. There is one element of organised crime that puts South African cities way above most. And that is the South African taxi industry. This is an industry by some of the craziest fuckers you'll ever come across. A lot of the drivers and taxi owners are Zulu and are from KwaZulu-Natal - a Zulu province/state. Mess with those people and your shit will be ruined for sure.

There always taxi wars. Owners and associations putting hits on each other over routes.

If the taxi you're in happens to take the wrong route and collect passengers it's not supposed - the AK's come out and they come out blazing. Drivers, passengers and other road users are getting capped. This is usally followed by revenge attacks, where they will wipe out entire families. There is Zulu a saying that says: "To destroy a tree, you to kid out the roots as well." This simply means they kill you and your kids so that they grow up to avenge your death.

Visit South Africa some time. It's fun.

its still tragic but africa and south america got it locked when it comes to crime rates that are on genocide level.
Take any african capital and you will find murder rates of 1000+ a year.
Same goes for dozens of cities in latin/south america. but heres my top five

2.Medellin (i know for a fact that it used to have 3000+ murders a year, and every 20 minutes a hostage taking)

I live in Johannesburg and as much as I will acknowledge that it can get pretty rough, you can also avoid the violence if you want. Johannesburg isn't one big battle zone.

The only real threats to everyday people are: Highjackings, stray bullets from bank robberies and cash-in-transit heists.

There isn't much gang violence to speak of. Of course you do have thugs who get pissed at each other and take each other out. But there are no turf wars and shit like that.

The only other thing is that at parties you really have to watch your step, coz dudes are usually packing and will ruin your shit if you fuck around. I repeat - you will get capped if you fuck with dudes on a night out.

^^Just looking at what we said, also, Los Angeles is often percieved by alot of English people to be the worst city in America (probably cos of its portrayal in gangster movies) however im sure LA is on the whole a nice city with its gang violence reserved only for certain city areas.

now i'm not an expert on africa but as far as i know liberia is probably one of the most troubled states in the world and since any attempts to establish a working government structure there failed, no law enforcement whatsoever can be upheld. i'm more or less quoting from books by peter scholl latour ("afrikanische totenklage", not available in english) and ryszard kapuscinski ("the shadow of the sun") and both of them depict liberia as absolute rock bottom.

i personally was in cape town five years ago. lots of street stuff going on there but i was hanging out with locals and therefore didn't feel in danger - most of the time. apart from the crime problems its probably one of the most beautiful places i've been to.
