73-Year-Old Austrian Arrested For Having Seven Children By Locked-Up Daughter, April 27, 2008
Mayur Pahilajani - AHN News Writer
Vienna, Austria (AHN) - In one of the shocking cases, a 73-year-old Austrian man was arrested by police after he allegedly hid his daughter in a cellar for 24 years in a basement dungeon in eastern Austria, where she bore him six children.
The 42-year-old woman, named as Elisabeth Fritzl, was drugged and handcuffed her before locking her up in their house in the town of Amstetten in 1984, a year she was believed to be missing on Aug. 28, 1984, by her father Joseph Fritzl.
The news about her existence came to light in the town located in Lower Austria Province after one of the teenage child fell ill and was taken to hospital, according to Franz Polzer, head of the Lower Austrian Bureau of Criminal Affairs.
One of her children, identified as 19-year-old Kerstin Fritzl, is currently hospitalized in the Lower Austrian town of Amstetten and is reportedly in very serious condition.
The woman, who accused her father of "massive crimes", added that Josef had provided her and three of her children, who were locked up with her with clothing and food.
The woman had three boys and three girls aged from five to 20 and the seventh child reportedly died three days after its birth, according to the police.
Josef was arrested on suspicion of incest and keeping his daughter in captivity, while DNA tests will be taken to prove whether he was indeed their father.
Meanwhile, the man's wife, Rosemarie, was not aware about the incident, the statement said.
The current case is the third of its kind to be revealed in Austria as in recent years similar cases have been found of children being locked away by their parents, according to AFP.

A 73-year-old Austrian man has been arrested on suspicion of 'hiding' his daughter in a cellar for 24 years and fathering six children with her, local police have said.
Reports claim the existence of the 42-year-old woman, who is believed to have been missing since 1984, became known after her 19 year-old daughter was taken ill and had to be taken to hospital.
The woman, known as Elisabeth F, and her daughter are now receiving medical treatment, the BBC reports.
Elisabeth is also receiving medial and psychological treatment.
The suspect, known only as Josef F, was arrested on suspicion of incest and keeping his daughter in captivity.
Local police at Amstetten, in the Lower Austrian Province, have said the investigation is currently ongoing and that DNA tests will be taken to see if Josef F did indeed father six children with his daughter.
The Reuters news agency has reported details of the police statement given based on Elisabeth's testimony.
In the statement, Elisabeth alleges that her father had been abusing her since the age of 11.
Reuters quotes that statement as saying Josef F lured his daughter into the cellar of their Amstetten home in 1984, drugging and handcuffing her before locking her up.
The police said that Elisabeth had been "abused continuously during the 24-year-long imprisonment" and that she had born six children while a seventh died soon after birth.
The statement claims Josef's wife Rosemarie had not been aware of what was happening in their home.
Reuters claim the 19-year-old girl, known as Kerstin F, was taken to the hospital last weekend and quote a police spokesman as saying: "The girl is seriously ill and is fighting for her life."
