They controlled almost every major city in the country each having its own gang, they started out actually just as simple street gangs and thugs and in time during the 90s morphed into mafia. In the documentary the guy who became a witness and went into witness protection and was the biggest one of them to do so was "the Mass". The city "Proszkow" looks as grimey if not moreso than bronx or detroit and u can see it in the first clip in 4:25 to 5:00, that's where it all basically started up and that was the most notorious crime family that wnet to war with another city near by called Wolomin, both were right next to the capital 'Warsaw". In the beginning of alfabet mafi (alphabet of mafia) intro where it shows the cross word puzzle Pruszkow is the first word. After this the documentary voice says:

Poles and Russians are slavs so we do have some cultural connections.
