There are many that believe California's Prison Rehabilitation System and other systems around the world have more sinister purpose outside of incarceration. Discuss prison topics here in California, throughout the United States and Internationally.

i heard Florencia are gaining in numbers in the MM's ranks

But it seems La Eme has a strangling hold on Northeast L.A & SGV, so i assume these areas have the most members

Not for nothing... Northeast / East LA is largely hispanic areas / SGV is mixed with white. Does the higher ranking level of the MM look down on gangs from South LA / Compton, and other parts of LA with more black influence, thinking they are what they may classify as 'ghetto'?

I thought Huero Shy was from Monte??? Thats a toss up. Aves has alot of carnales in their ranks not counting out the Grajeras. I would probably put my money AVES as having the most made carnales and activity.

Nah huero shy was from ARTESIA CHIVAS, I think you thought he was from EL MONTE, cuz the murders by PELON MACIEL, from monte were committed by him -in that area he got indicted in that case but never went to trial for it a whole family was wiped out.....the killers would eventually be killed

In the book the Black Hand there's a picture of 6 Eme members from Artesia 13 in prison in the 80s. Including, 2 high ranking members, "Boxer" and "Huero Shy".

Assistant U. S. Attorneys Michael J. Crowley (619) 557-5733 and John N. Parmley (619) 557-6198 For Immediate Release
AFO Enforcer and Mexican Mafia Member Faces New Drug Charges NEWS RELEASE SUMMARY - June 5, 2008 San Diego, CA - United States Attorney Karen P. Hewitt announced today the unsealing of five criminal complaints charging a total of twelve individuals with federal drug trafficking and firearm violations. The charges stem from an undercover investigation conducted by the San Diego Violent Crimes Task Force Gang Group into the illegal activities of the Mexican Mafia prison gang and associated Latino street gangs in the San Diego area. Four of the five complaints charge eleven defendants, including Mexican Mafia member Jose Alberto “Bat” Marquez, with Conspiracy to Distribute Methamphetamine. Marquez, who is currently in federal custody, was indicted in the Southern District of California in 2002 for conspiracies to import and distribute marijuana and cocaine as part of the Arellano-Felix drug trafficking organization; as noted in the 2002 indictment, Marquez acted as an enforcer, bodyguard, and caretaker of stash houses for the Arellano-Felix organization. Marquez was extradited from Mexico to the United States in January 2007. The complaint alleges that, in April 2007, Marquez orchestrated a methamphetamine deal involving at least two other Mexican Mafia associates, despite being in federal custody.

Mexican drug cartel gunman arrested for attempted murder

New York, January 29, 2008—The Committee to Protect Journalists urges Mexican authorities to fully investigate the alleged involvement of Alfredo Araujo Avila, a top hit man for the Arellano Félix drug cartel, in the shooting of editor J. Jesús Blancornelas a decade ago. Araujo was arrested Saturday in Tijuana by the Mexican military, according to international news reports.

As part of President Felipe Calderón’s administration’s crackdown on drug trafficking, soldiers stormed a house in Tijuana and arrested Araujo after an anonymous tip-off, said Reuters. Mexican law enforcement officials have described Araujo as one of the top assassins of the powerful Arellano Félix drug cartel. According to The New York Times, he is a U.S. citizen.

Araujo, known as “Popeye,” is among the suspects in the murder of Roman Catholic Cardinal Juan Posadas Ocampo, shot on May 24, 1993, while sitting in his car at Guadalajara airport, The Associated Press reported. Mexican authorities have also named Araujo as a suspect in the 1997 murder attempt against Blancornelas, founder and editor of the weekly Tijuana-based magazine Zeta. Blancornelas’ bodyguard, Luis Valero, was killed in the attack, and Blancornelas was gravely wounded.

“We are encouraged by the prospect of justice in the assassination attempt against
Zeta’s founder,” said CPJ Executive Director Joel Simon. “We urge Mexican authorities to ensure that Araujo’s involvement in the shooting against Blancornelas is fully investigated. Violence against journalists will never cease until authorities prove they will go after the perpetrators.”

The shooting attack against Blancornelas was prompted by an investigative piece in Zeta describing how the Arellano Félix cartel recruited gunmen from violent street gangs in San Diego’s Barrio Logan neighborhood. The leader of the Barrio Logan assassins was a veteran gangster named David Barron Corona, who earned the Arellano Félix family’s loyalty by saving two of the brothers from an ambush. Blancornelas published an article identifying Barron Corona as one of the top cartel enforcers.

A few weeks later, Barron Corona and a team of assassins ambushed Blancornelas while he was on his way to work. The assassination attempt failed only because Barron Corona was killed by one of his own gunmen when a bullet ricocheted and struck him in the eye.

Blancornelas died of natural causes in November 2006.

Created in 1980, Zeta is one of the only publications to regularly run investigations on organized crime, drug trafficking, and corruption in Mexico’s northern states, where self-censorship is rampant. The cost of Zeta’s coverage of crime along the U.S.-Mexico border has been high: Héctor Félix Miranda, co-founder of the magazine, was assassinated in 1988, and co-editor Francisco Ortiz Franco was murdered in 2004. Adela Navarro Bello, the weekly’s general director, was given an International Press Freedom Award by CPJ in 2007.

Tijuana Gunman May Have Mexican Mafia Tie
By Anne-Marie O'Connor
November 29, 1997 in print edition A-1

Mexican authorities say a suspected gunman for the Tijuana drug cartel, slain in a Thanksgiving Day attack on a Tijuana journalist, may have been a member of the California prison-based Mexican Mafia.

The involvement of David Barron Corona in the assassination attempt on editor Jesus Blancornelas was the latest twist in a series of cross-border crimes that underscore the transnational character of the drug empire allegedly run by the Arellano Felix brothers, U.S. and Mexican federal sources say.

Police are still unsure whether Barron was killed by Blancornelas’ bodyguard, who died in the attack, or by his fellow gunmen in the cross-fire. There has been no official news of arrests.

Barron, who grew up in San Diego’s Barrio Logan, was among the young men allegedly recruited by the cartel from poor neighborhoods in San Diego and wealthy districts of Tijuana for violence on both sides of the border, which they used as an invisible shield against apprehension.

“They commit crimes and escape to one side of the border or the other,” said Sgt. Manuel Rodriguez, head of San Diego’s cross-border police task force. “It makes it real difficult. It’s one of the weaknesses.”

“The border traditionally was exploited by criminals for the sanctuary it offered between two jurisdictions that did not communicate very often or coordinate very well,” said San Diego U.S. Atty. Alan Bersin.

“What Barron represents is a cross-border alliance between outlaws from both countries who have exploited the border for criminal purposes,” he said.

Diana Ortiz Villacorta, spokeswoman for the Mexico attorney general’s Tijuana district office, said Barron was a suspected cartel gunman known as CH who was named in an extradition case as one of the San Diego gang members involved in the 1993 killing of Guadalajara archbishop Juan Jesus Posadas Ocampo.

“He crossed the border to kill,” Ortiz said.

The violence of the drug cartel–like its power to corrupt–has not recognized borders since it emerged as a major player in the shipment of heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine to the United States in the early 1990s.

In March, a U.S. informant on the Tijuana cartel was seriously wounded by gunmen in southern San Diego. In December 1996, a reputed cartel enemy, Fernando Jesus Gutierrez, was targeted so expertly by a marksman during rush-hour traffic on San Diego’s picturesque seaside Silver Strand roadway that the killing was initially reported as a car accident. The modus operandi was identical to the slaying four years earlier of San Diego businessman Alejandro Ledesma Cazares, also believed to be a victim of cartel violence.

In 1989, Mexican police say, a senior godfather from the Arellanos’ extended family in Sinaloa state sent a henchman to seduce the long-suffering wife of a rival trafficker. The man persuaded the wife to withdraw millions of her husband’s money and then killed the woman in San Francisco. He took her two children to Venezuela, where he threw them off a bridge to their deaths. He later died in jail there, police said.

The difficulties of prosecuting suspects in cross-border crimes have been illustrated by the ongoing effort to extradite two alleged cartel gunmen jailed in San Diego in September 1996 after the slaying of the Baja federal police chief. The extradition is bogged down in allegations that key witnesses against them were tortured into confessing in Mexico.

In the 1993 slaying of the archbishop, eight of the suspects were members of a San Diego gang allegedly recruited by the Arellanos for killings in Mexico and the United States.

Barron, long reputed to be a member of the 30th Street gang of San Diego’s Barrio Logan, had a large “M” on his chest and other tattoos that are characteristic of members of the Mexican Mafia, Ortiz said. U.S. federal authorities said he had long been suspected of being a member of that mafia.

U.S. federal authorities said they believe that Barron–who was known as CH, Charly and Charly Logan–had been living in Mexico.

He carried a Mexico City driver’s license falsely identifying him as Javier Ortiz Calvo, a practice typical of a murky drug underworld whose members have been known to carry even false police IDs.

Blancornelas, one of Mexico’s most respected journalists, had named “CH” in the Nov. 21 issue of his newsweekly, Zeta, as one of the authors of the gangland slaying two weeks ago of two Mexican soldiers assigned to the Baja federal police.

According to Zeta, the soldiers were slain in retaliation for their involvement in the arrest of alleged cartel lieutenant Arturo Paez Martinez in Tijuana three weeks ago.

Blancornelas was hospitalized Friday in stable condition, according to a relative.

Despite this rash of crime, Bersin said he sees progress in the form of the Binational Safety Council launched in June.

In the past, he said, “there has been extraordinary mistrust between law enforcement officials on both sides.”

But “rather than speak in terms of one nation or another nation, we have to understand this as regional issues of public safety,” Bersin said. “What law enforcement has to do is to organize itself to counter this transnational threat.”mayugastank

Damn, that's some sh-t!

I grew up on the border, so I always wondered what the relationship was like between La Eme and the Arellanos/other cartels. It would make sense for La Eme to move in, especially as crazy as things are down there, with all the cartels fighting each other and the government stepping in.
La Eme seems to have a bigger lock on things North of the border than the cartels have south of the border.
It doesn't seem like it would be hard for La Eme to get a presence in the prisons in Mexico, and start recruiting Surenos with the raza down there. The only difference is that they would make easy targets for the military if the government down there decided to crack down on them on the street or in prison. And they don't have as many rules as the l.e. does in the states. ANd I think a lot of goverment, law enforcement in Mexico is getting paid by the cartels, so I don't know if they would let la eme move in.

LA EME. CAlifornias LA EME. They were heavily involved in the Tijuana Arellano -Felix cartel, the biggest most famous murders in Mexico were done by EME members in the 90s. Check out the above post. That vato EL CH, was known as popeye from LA EME, across his chest he had the EME symbols, he was sponsored in by BAT MArquez another BIgtime EMERO. Smilon Gallardo, another big emero just recenty arrested for gunning down some drug agents in MExico. All these guys were sent out to TJ to start running things and they did. The EME member Bat Marquez, was a suspect in the murder of a PAN canidate for president in the 90s. A presidential contender . Thats for anyone who claims that the EME is a prison gang.

Alfredo Araujo Avila, a top hit man for the Arellano Félix drug cartel, in the shooting of editor J. Jesús Blancornelas a decade ago. Araujo was arrested Saturday , stepson of SMILON GALLARDO, EME member. He was a made a memebr of the EME in a hotel videotape that was shown over and over on clips of the EME.
