Riot at Pelican Bay State Prison may have been gang-related

On Friday at about 1:35 p.m., a riot broke out among 66 inmates in a maximum-security yard at Pelican Bay State Prison, according to a prison news release.

Correctional officers discharged pepper spray and one round from a Mini-14 rifle and used rubber batons to stop the riot, which took place in three areas of the yard.

Officers recovered six inmate-manufactured weapons from the scene. Two inmates suffered serious injuries and were transported to an outside hospital for treatment, according to the release.

Two correctional officers received minor injuries. One suffered an injury to his finger and the other received an injury on his forearm after being hit by a chair thrown by an inmate.

The riot may have been gang-related. “This appears to be a calculated incident, based on the fact that the riot occurred in three different locations at the same time,” Pelican Bay State Prison Public Information Officer Lt. Ken Thomas said.

Authorities are exhausting their resources to discover who is responsible and hold them accountable, Thomas said.

In addition to the prison’s investigation, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation’s Deadly Force Investigation Team, the Office of the Inspector General’s Bureau of Independent Review and the Del Norte County District Attorney’s Office will be reviewing the incident, according to the release.

Pelican Bay State Prison, a maximum-security prison, is located 13 miles from the Oregon border. The prison houses more than 3,400 inmates and employs more than 1,500 people.

I wouldn't say they've lasted because of the brothers having their back, its not really like that, its just mutual respect and common enemies. It differs from prison to prison and yard to yard... there are some yards that Nortes can't walk, sureno run that shit.. but Norternors got heart, and hands. Them fools will hit the yard with a yard full of southernors and get busy... then get tossed in the hole or SHU...

Then you have yards where Nortes are deep, and they can hold their own.

Not entirely true homeboy! I was in High Desert when the shit cracked in Pelican Bay. Now i roll with the Northerners and the word we got on paper from the Bay was that on the level 4 yard some southsiders were trying to opress us. I guess their was a homie from sac that had a big SK blasted on him and when he hit the yard he took off his shirt and i guess some youngster southsider that had the yard went to the homie and said that he had to put his shirt back on. So i guess homeboy told the other homies and at the next yard the Northerners hit the SS in like 3 different areas. Word was in High Desert was that the SS lost their shit that day. Even the southsiders were saying that in High Desert. Now when the second riot happened, it happened on the lower level yard, it was the northerners again that hit the southsiders. A little birdy told me it came from the SHU in Pelican Bay that the Northerners were to attack on all yards cause there has been to many incidents like this in the past couple of months.

We have a mutual respect for the africanos, and from time to time we help them out with weapons cause we share the same common enemy, but if we get down they dont get involved and if they get down we aint gettin involved. We never rode with the blacks never. Matter of fact, their have been a few riots involving the blacks and northerners. In 2007 on B yard in high desert the Northerners attacked the blacks over disrespect, 8 blacks had to be airlifted to reno cause of that shit. You say were badly outnumbered? Yea on the PC yard you must of been on. Its true we dont have a lot of yards, BUT, the yards we do have are fuckin deep, you got like 100-150 northerners on one yard, shit alone in high desert on the A yard we had 80 northerners, and there was only like 40 sureno, and it was like that on every yard in high desert except for D yard which was no good for us. Hell in Tracy there was like 200 northerners at one time, when i was in New Folsom, we had 120 heads and the SS only had like 60. Homie we still got a lot of yard, in susnville we have all the yards,, in corcoran we have all the yards, in New folsom we have all the yards, all of tracy, san quentin, pelican bay, soledad, solano, salinas valley, are all good yards for northerners and believe me theres lots of heads homeboy.
