13-year-old El Monte boy brings guns to school after racial harassment by street gang

EL MONTE - A 13-year-old black child who was being harassed by Latino gang members was arrested after he brought loaded guns to school to defend himself, police said.

Police booked the boy Thursday on suspicion of bringing two loaded handguns to Durfee Elementary School, 12233 Star Street, said police Detective Eric Walterscheid.

The boy apparently had no intention of hurting anyone at the school, but brought the weapons to defend himself from Latino gang members who had threatened and harassed him about his race as he traveled to and from school, Walterscheid said.

The student had several run-ins with El Monte Flores gang members in recent weeks. They threatened him with a gun and taunted him with racial slurs, the detective said.

"Just recently he was waiting at a bus stop, Walterscheid said. "A carload of El Monte Flores gang members threatened to kill him, called him a (expletive) and pointed a handgun at him."

While Walterscheid said he did not condone the boy's actions, he was sympathetic to his situation.

"I guess he was kind of at his wits end," the detective said. The boy had no gang ties or history of trouble.

El Monte City School District Superintendent Jeff Seymour said the incident did not appear to pose a threat to students or staff at the school.

"There was no threatening action, there was nothing other than the inappropriateness of the things he brought to school," he said.

"The weapons were found in a backpack," Seymour said. "Beyond that, it's all pretty much confidential."

The boy took the guns, 9mm and .38-caliber semi-automatic handguns, from his father without his father's knowledge, Walterscheid said. School officials were notified of the guns Thursday morning, and police were immediately called.

I dont blame the kid. I used to be from El Monte..A Its a racist ass place there.The quarter back for the MVHS football team was black and gang members jumped him when he attended a party.

One time I saw this black kid around 14 or 16 walking in El Monte. I was literally gonna ask him if he lived in El Monte and to not come out alone.

Yet I see these SAME gang members with the Kobe jerseys.
