Suicidal Tendencies, a punk/hardcore/thrash band that had a cholo image but rarely sung about gang specific themes. there were several Suicidal protégé bands at the time like No Mercy, Neighborhood Watch. Chaotic Noise, Rim Pests and Beowulf that had similar cholo image. Arguably this may have been the first true gang related genre. although it didn't last very long or make a big very big impact on the larger world of punk or thrash metal music.

so weird went to a show they did in the lower east side. bunch of latin bikers in there, definitely older men and women who represented a culture, I'm not gonna say gang culture but they were affiliated with each other. if you listen to their music though, it's straight up folk. I would compare them to Los Alacranes from San Diego.

I've heard a lot of GB's music and yeah most of it was light, like folk or very light rock. Their main song "Ghetto Brother Power" is cool though. It's like raw Latin rock. they should have stuck with that sound!

here's Oi! music. A style of punk rock from the early 80's, that was based off working class skins, punks and hooligans. Oi! bands generally dressed in skinhead. street punk or hooligan style and sung about running from cops, killing judges, football fights, riots, etc. This scene was more about working class pride and fighting oppressive authority than gang banging, though.

This is a russian song from 1923. Its a bout a female gang leader in russia called Murka. She betrays her gang and snitches to the cops, which gets her shot to death.

The genre is called blatnaya pesnya, "russian criminal song".

Some excerpts of the lyrics:

great posts, Sentenza. I hadn't even considered old school organized crime having their own music styles. That's wild.

IMO pure gangsta music is where the artist/band has both gang affiliations AND sings/raps/talks about gang related themes.

In L.A. before gangsta rap broke out, every race had their own "gang music". Chicanos had oldies, blacks had P-funk and rap, whites had punk rock and heavy metal, Asians and Pinoy had various types of dance music. None of this music was truly gang related but it had gang associations to the listener and was part of the backdrop of gang life. This was driving music, hanging out music. Gang members would go to funk/rap/rock/punk/metal/oldies shows in force to rep their gangs. A P Funk show in L.A. back in the late 70's or early 80's would be like an all black version of the Warriors, there were so many Crips and Blood gangs repping. At punk shows you'd have LADS, FFF and Sui's all repping their gangs. If a Chicano themed band like Tierra or El Chicano played in L.A., you'd definitely have cholos showing up in force.

If you've seen the movie Colors, you know that with the exception of Ice T's song "Colors" that he wrote for the movie, the music is mostly straight up old school rap, oldies and even Spanish guitar music at one point LOL. By the time you get to Boyz In The Hood things have definitely changed. Gangsta Rap had arrived, big time.

people who came to see them were definitely flying colors. unfortunately I don't remember which ones (no for real I'm not trying to be secretive)

it was an older crowd I would say 30 and up. Had the uptown look, like Bronx and Harlem
