Trivia: Gangs that did not start out as gangs
Which gangs started out as the following before becoming a hood?:
Football teams:
Car or Motorcycle Clubs:
Tagging crews:
Party Crews:
Community Youth Groups:
Activist Groups:
Stoner Crews:
Cliques that broke off and became their own hood: (I know this isn’t the same thing as they were technically already banging, but they didn’t start from the ground up is what I mean)
If there are any other categories I’m missing, feel free to add them.

Re: Trivia: Gangs that did not start out as gangs
Correct me if im wrong, i'm just going by memory!!
Football teams: Rockwood 13, Vineland Boys 13
Car or Motorcycle Clubs: Harpys 13, Drifters 13
Tagging crews: KMT = Kings Making Trouble, originally a tagging crew that started in the late 80's, became an official click of Watts 13 in the mid to late 90's, and became known as their "Krazy Mexican Town" clique.
Party Crews: Rated-X or X-Rated? Forgot which one it was, but they were a party crew in the early 90's and most of them got into Opal street.
Community Youth Groups: White Fence, they started off as a latino community youth groups, and eventually became a gang.
Activist Groups: No Idea on this one
Stoner Crews: Mara Salvatrucha 13, originally started out as stoners and were into heavy metal before becoming a gang. Same thing with Stoners 13 out in East Los. High Times Maravilla etc. There's alot to name.
Cliques that broke off and became their own hood: Vineland Boys 13 were originally from 18st, broke off and became their own hood.
Lowell street were originally a click of El Sereno 13, they got green lighted for refusing to pay taxes and were given the boot from El Sereno 13.
Orphans 13 were originally a click of 18st, they were catching to much heat, and decided to break off and do their own thing.

I had no idea Harpys and Drifters were car clubs... there’s always rumors but I remember someone said Drifters was a football team started by some Filipino dude. But the name Drifters does sound more like a car club...
I’ll try to name some:
Car clubs:
- Playboys 13 started off as a car club around 1955 near Pico and Fedora; that general area. Became a gang sometime in the 60’s. I think it was called Southern Califas Latin Playboys
- Sotel 13... car club called Thee Falcons either in the 40’s or 50’s... adopted the Sotel name sometime in the 60’s...
- Choppers 12... motorcycle club started I think in the 50’s...
- I think The Magicians Club was a motorcycle or car club? Not sure but the name sounds like it.
Football Teams: Big Top Locos, Head Hunters
Party Crews: I think Poserz 13?
Tagging Crews: Alley Tiny Criminals, Diablos 13... Unstoppable Mexican Kings sounds like it was a tagging crew. Crazy For Life and DNA 73rd Street are the others I think.
Community Youth Groups: I read an old LA Times article from the 40’s where a representative of Clanton didn’t appreciate the bad press in the media his “community youth group” was getting. That’s how he characterized Clanton. You are right on White Fence. Also someone told me Lincoln Heights started out at some YMCA as a community group. The Red Shield clique of 18th Street in Pico-Union started at the Salvation Army for neighborhood kids. Black P. Stone started off as a mix of a community youth and activist group. At least in Chicago. I’m not sure if they were trying to maintain that in the beginning in LA.
Activist Groups: I think Michigan Chicano Force 13 in Boyle Heights was one of those Chicano activist groups from the 60’s & 70’s that became a hood. Nowadays they often write “Michigan Criminal Force.”
Cliques they became their own hood: I heard Indiana Dukes and King Kobras used to be cliques of Varrio Nuevo Estrada?

Harpys started off as a motorcycle club, not too quite sure on the drifters history.TheAngels wrote: ↑December 27th, 2020, 12:29 amyoda100 wrote: ↑December 26th, 2020, 8:26 pmCorrect me if im wrong, i'm just going by memory!!

Re: Trivia: Gangs that did not start out as gangs
South Gate varrios :
Marijuanos Locos, Garden View Locos, and Kansas St were all football teams formed early 70s.
South Gate Tokers and Barrio Ardmore Youngsters were both tag crews formed in early 90s.
Bell Gardens Varrios:
Bell Gardens Locos was a football team formed early 70s. Wicked Evil Surenos was a tag crew formed in the early 90s.
Indiana Dukes in Boyle Heights was a car club formed by a SG Garden View Locos member named Diablo. He jumpstarted them into a varrio after neighboring hoods started beefing with the club.
MoonLight Cats (or Gatos Luneros) in South Central was a rockabilly Party crew before becoming a varrio. One of the only party crews of that scene to neither disappear or click up with a bigger hood.

Indiana Dukes wasn't a click of VNE, it was a car club founded by a GVLS Member.
