Rare Oldies, which do you consider to be rare?
Rare Oldies, which do you consider to be rare?
I know we all have heard the "Art Laboe" style oldies. We have also gone through the East Side Stories and Dedicated to You series..
Beyond the Delfonics and Al Green there are far more groups that are unheard of and to this day do not get airplay. Thank goodness for that!!
What do you have in your collection that you can proudly play and know that it is not something you can hear on the radio.
Post what you have.
I'll start off with the Kickin Mustangs: Gonna Take A Miracle.

I don't know how "rare" you want to go on this one - if you're talking about "out of the ordinary groups" i'm gonna have to work on it some and get some of my olden stuff out my attic boxes.
I got the regular oldies, i also got the spanish ones, and some rare "never heard of by anyone these days kinda stuff" - but i gotta go dig it out for you sir.
On the classic rock oldies off hand on my library are the following vvvv
Stories - Brother Louie
Ozark mountain - Jackie Blue
Eagles - Bells Will Be Ringing
Chicago - Just You And Me
Chicago - Please Don't Go
Peter Frampton - Baby, I Love Your Way
Peter Frampton - Show Me The Way
Ohio Players - Baby Come Back
The Manhattans - Shinning Star
Elvin Bishop - Fooled Around And Fell In Love
Bee Gees - How Deep Is Your Love
Bee Gees - How Can You Mend A Broken Heart
The Association - Never My Love

Re: Rare Oldies, which do you consider to be rare?
Nah Bohannon, Funkadelic are straight funk. Deep funk though, not the funk the West is real big on like Zapp, Lakeside, Vaughn Mason. Gwen McCrae only seen her shit on 45 and it's more soul, along with Gil Scott-Heron, that's wild if you never heard of Heron. Timothy McNealy got this one track "Sagittarius Black" I would say is one of the tightest funk tracks. Roy Ayers is soul-jazz but you I'm sure you heard that song before it's well-known but not often played. This all classifies as oldies to me because it's seventies music. Maybe I'm off by saying that though.Huerito wrote:Are these more towards "blues" style?Cold Bear wrote:Bohannon

Re: Rare Oldies, which do you consider to be rare?
I'm going to have to pass on this one. I don't have such a collection of oldies, and i'm terrible with names. The oldies in spanish is another thing, but the oldies in english - as Gibby wrote of gettin' them from his uncles, i would have to do the same - only i'm not in such close proximity or close communication with the ones in L.A. or El Paso, however i do "now" understand which "rare" you're lookin' for - and there "was" plenty of those in "records" - one can not find them in cd's - for these were not top 40's labels. On that note "HAY NOS VEMOS - CARAS NO VEMOS"Huerito wrote:You narrowed it down to soul oldies alright.lonewolf wrote:i'm working on some more, but gotta ask "am i in the right track for rare oldies"?

Re: Rare Oldies, which do you consider to be rare?
Gibby seems to be the only one here who might have an idea of what soul oldies are. I could list my collection for days. But most of you would be like...huh. If you didn't then they couldn't be that rare, now could they. But heres a list of some well known artists that have great songs you never knew existed.
Barbara Mason
Billy Stewart
Eddie Holman
Whispers
Manhattans
Gene Chandler
Archie Bell & The Drells
I have spent years collecting rare soul but have spent the last few years collecting old R&B songs. These are more commonly known as doo-wop, but that term didn't start til much later. But I still have a pretty damn good collection of soul from the early 60's to the mid 70's.
Gibby, I would like to hear more of what you got.
