Gang Members Convicted In Slaying Of Boy At Sweet 16 Party

RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Two gang members were convicted Thursday of murdering a 13-year-old boy attending a "Sweet 16" party.

One jury convicted Tavares Cotland Scott and another convicted Wesley Ira Young, both 25, of murder, attempted murder and shooting into an inhabited dwelling. They also found true that they committed the crimes as a gang activity and to benefit a gang.

The two men face life in prison without the possibility of parole.


In all there were three defendants and three juries in the trial, and a third jury is continuing deliberations against co-defendant Mario Jireh Gray, also 25.

Young and Scott are from Ontario, while Gray is from Fontana.

A fourth defendant, Juan Terrell Young, 26, is charged in the case but is a fugitive. A $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to his arrest and conviction.

Deputy District Attorney John Aki argued during the 2½-month trial that the defendants crashed a 16th birthday party for Kortney Green at her Kilworth Drive home in Corona on Oct. 12, 2002. They went to the party to beat a young man invoved in an earlier altercation with one of their friends.

When the men were ejected from the party, they fired shots into a garage, fatally striking Daveon Lee in the back of the head.

Young and Scott are members of the Los Angeles-based 94 Hoovers, a gang active in Ontario, Fontana, Rialto and Moreno Valley.

The three would crash house parties where hosts charged guests $5 to listen to music, dance and drink.

They often used intimidation tactics to gain entry into the parties and would target specific people or rival gang members to fight or shoot, according to trial testimony.

Both defendants showed no emotion when their verdicts were read.

Scott's attorney, Brian King, said his client was "in shock" and did not comment further.
