Gang Trivia - Jan 24, 2008 - Raymond Washington's home

Postby alexalonso on Thu Jan 24, 2008 1:54 pm

Raymond washington started the East Side Crips on LA's eastside sometime in late 1969 or early 1970. It was a huge neighborhood compared to hoods today. The question is what gang now occupys the street where raymond washington started his first neighborhood?

i knew people would say east coast, because East Side Crip did splinter into ECC hoods, but the correct answer is Swans but the Swans were Crips for a short time, i think clicked up with Main Street

In the past year a lot of F13 have migrated over there, they have several clicks over there that are either transplants or frequent the area.

I had some Swan history but I misplaced it, it explained the Main Street influence. Also, check the history of Vertice Swan, he somehow ties into the Crips and Swans in that area...

Raymond Washington would roll over in his grave if he knew the Swans took ove that territory. However, his family had close ties to the F13's so I don't think that would be too much of a surprise except for the beef with ECC would likely be something else he'd flipped over.

Hey AllHood, I find it interesting that you say that Mr. Washington and his family had close ties to Florencia 13. Can you elaborate on this? Did Florencia 13 and the East Side Crips participate in criminal activity together? Did the Mexican Mafia frown upon Florencia members having friendly contact with black gang members back then like they do now? I'm not from L.A. nor am I a gangbanger so forgive me if I sound totally ignorant about the situation.

^Florencia 13 is a very old gang that pre-dates Crips and Bloods by a couple decades.. when Raymond Washingtons family moved over there in 1959, his older brothers were raised with the F13's living over there. They didn't have beef, they were very tight with the Washington Family- 5 brothers. I don't know about any criminal involvement.

AllHood or Alonso-question about Raymond Washington?

AllHood, thanks for the response. I have another question about Raymond Washington. I'm not sure if you know the answer or not, maybe Alonso does. I tried to find this on the internet but wasn't able to. Where in Texas was Raymond Washington originally born?

I'm quite aware that he grew up a Cali boy, but I remember reading from the streetgangs article about him that he was born in Texas and moved with his family to California when he was about 3 years old. The reason this piques my curiosity is that I'm a Texan, born and raised. I've always found it interesting that the founder of the Crips was born in my state.

I'm also quite aware that many of the blacks that migrated to Cali during the 40s, 50s, and 60s were either from Texas or Louisiana. I know Barry White was originally from Galveston on the Texas coast near Houston and Tookie was originally from New Orleans. OJ Simpson's mom was from Louisiana, I don't know about his dad though. My family history reflects this. I have a brother of my grandmother, born and raised in Texas, who currently lives in Santa Monica and has lived in Cali for a long time now. His dad, my great grandfather (R.I.P.), worked in Los Angeles as a janitor for around 20 or 30 years and retired in Los Angeles before returning to Texas where he spent the rest of his life in the Texas town he was born and raised in. Thanks again AllHood.

The newspapers and gang historians that spreaded that myth got it all wrong. Raymond Washingtons family was from Texas but Raymond was born in Watts.. I will detail his story in the next issue of Allhood Publications..

Thank you for enlightening me AllHood. Media had me thinking Raymond was Texas-born like myself. I saw your MySpace pages and the link to your magazine's website. Now I know why you go by AllHoodPublications, that's your magazine. Looks like interesting stuff. So you cover a different gang every issue? I saw Denver Lane Bloods, Bounty Hunters, Harlem Crips and other gangs on the cover of every issue. Do you also do stories on Mexican gangs or just black gangs?

If anybody's curious about AllHood Publications magazines, here's the website below.

If his mother and oldest brother are wrong, then so am I. Raymonds brother is our folks, his nephew and his son and i'm in touch with his kids mothers. If they tell me he was born in Nickerson Gardens I have to believe that, mother knows best.

I have to refrain from sharing too much info until I publish the article but Raymonds mother fled Texas from her Husband and met Raymonds Father in Watts.. the father of the kids in Texas is NOT a Washington!

I have yet to read the obituary that I have to confirm or dispute that.. but I doubt they suffer from Ahtimerz (spellcheck).

Raymond Lee Washington was the co-founder of a Los Angeles, California street gang, which eventually would become known as the Crips, one of the most notorious and violent gangs in United States history. Raymond "Ray Ray" Washington was born in Haskell, Texas. When he was three years old, his family relocated to 76th Street, on the east side of South-Central Los Angeles. In 1969, 15-year-old Raymond Washington, then a student at John C. Fremont High School, …

I think the truth will reflect that they didn't move to 76th and Wadsworth until Raymond was 6, not 3. At the age of three he was still living in a housing project in Watts- so don't rely on my information- use your own discretion on what you read and believe about Raymond Washington.

In my honest opinion, this is what makes this story groundbreaking, it will shed light on a lot of myths and should provide never before published pictures and stories about Raymond untold in LA Weekly and online.

Tookie was born in Texas. For some reason I thought that Raymond was born in Texas too. Maybe I am wrong on this one.

His death certificate says he was born in Los Angeles, but I have scene mistakes on death certificates before. I would like to get a copy of his birth certificate, but this is a copy from my files.

^Thanks for sharing... i'm almost certain this BC is correct. At one time or another I thought he was born in Texas also but as you know in recent years I have became a critic of the media and the way it shapes our minds. We read things from credible sources be it newspapers, documentaries, books, or law enforcement and we trust the information is correct.

If you look at the links that I posted from URL to URL they have similar info with different birth places. Anyhow, I wouldn't expect his mother and brothers to forget where he was born. Its water under the bridge now.. your records support the facts. These news reporters haven't done their research.

Right next to his mother's name, Violet Samuel it says "Tex" for birthplace for her and L.A. for the father's birthplace, but L.A. could be Louisiana too.

His address was listed as 4215 W 58th Place in LA, thats way on the west side far from where he was killed.

Not sure where his pops was born but I beleive he came from the South also.. but he was a Los Angeles resident when Raymonds Mother moved her family to Watts..

Google that address.. very consistent to what i said above about them being our folks. Thats just two blocks south of my residence. Thats directly behind your boy Big Cat that you interviewed.
